A Promise To Protect - 25. Mission - Feelings are a Weakness

Zeke returns with rope he'd had to go all the way out to the car to retrieve, and securely ties Wyatt to a kitchen chair. He stands back, observing him critically. Tyler steps back, lost in his own thought about what this was. The whole thing felt off and yet Wyatt didn't seem like he was lying. His reactions were very, authentic. There was no reaction towards Zeke but he kept glancing at Tyler, putting him on edge. Zeke had been asking him questions and watching every single body movement including his eyes, to see if there were any clues he wasn't being honest but each answer, all the ones that suggested he didn't know Zeke personally in any way, had no idea why they were here and who they worked for, were answered with no contradictory body language to suggest it was a lie. Zeke took a break, heading instead into the bedroom. When he's out of sight, Tyler moves close to Wyatt to talk to him quietly.

"Wyatt, how do you know me?" Tyler asks.

"Do you seriously not remember?" Wyatt replies, shaking his head and looking into Tyler's eyes like he's the one that has lost his mind.

"Ironic, really, because there seems to be an awful lot you're not remembering." Tyler comments and crouches on the floor in front of Wyatt, not wanting to look threatening. If Wyatt somehow thought he knew Tyler then he might open up if Tyler went along with this delirium. "I can't remember you Wyatt. Why don't I remember you?" He asks in a whisper.

"It was between you and me. I was chosen because you ran off. They must have caught you and wiped your memory." Wyatt explains quickly.

"Who caught me? The agency?"

"Z." Tyler walks into the bedroom and closes the door behind himself as he finds his partner sitting on the bed looking off in thought. "What are we going to do?" Tyler approaches, sitting beside him on the bed.

"We should take him back to base, have him questioned and assessed and..."

"Is that what you think is best for him?" Tyler sighs.

"Well he doesn't seem to have any idea who and what we are." Zeke shrugs. Not an answer to the question but the doubt said a lot about where his head was at with all of it.

"Ok so here me out, what's the risk if he's completely lost his memory, of us just leaving him in peace?" Tyler asks.

"If he's lying, he's here for a reason and we need to find out what that is." Zeke replies with a groan.

"But think about it, this is the agency safe house right? So do you honestly think they don't know he's here? as far as he in concerned, he's been here a while now. He surely can't have just been squatting in a house owned and monitored by the agency without them realizing for that long."

"You think they know he's here?" Zeke frowns at Tyler, considering the possibility.

"He's got a tracking device, Z. Maybe they sent him here to keep an eye on him. My assumption is that they did the mind thing on him after they questioned him, and sent him away but are keeping check on him to make sure he's not remembering anything he shouldn't. So can't we just head back and tell them he's here and he's not a threat without taking him in and traumatizing him more than we already have? I feel sorry for the guy. He thinks this is his house, he thinks he's got nothing to do with us and he has no idea who we are and yet he's been tied to a chair and questioned. I feel like that's enough damage for one night, don't you?" Tyler suggests, chewing his lip as Zeke takes in his suggestion in silence.

"He didn't have a tracking device when I knew him. I would have noticed." Zeke frowns, going back to Tyler's first statement. He gets up and walks out, heading straight back to Wyatt who looks immediately terrified to see him. Zeke turns Wyatt's face and looks closely at the scar on his neck. "G has some explaining to do." Zeke steps back and places a hand on Wyatt's shoulder. "I'm really sorry, this has all been a misunderstanding." Zeke says in a tone of regret as he goes into the kitchenette, finding a knife and returning to Wyatt.

"Please don't kill me, I won't tell anyone. I promise. I swear." Wyatt begs, his body desperately trying to move and tears streaming down his face.

"This is for the ropes. We didn't mean to hurt you, we were looking for someone else, someone that use to live here. I'll make sure this never happens to you again." Zeke assures him as he cuts the ropes and frees Wyatt. The poor guy a trembling mess as he stays in his seat, too scared to move. Tyler walks over with a blanket from the bedroom, he drapes it over Wyatt's shoulders and wraps it around the front of him. He'd been stuck in only his underwear for so long and was probably freezing cold.

"Is there anything we can do for you before we leave to make you feel safe?" Tyler asks. Wyatt shakes his head quickly, probably just wanting these people out of his house more than anything. Tyler and Zeke look at each other, both feeling incredibly guilty as they turn away from Wyatt and leave.

As Zeke gets in the car he sinks into the seat and lets out a deep sigh.

"You ok?" Tyler asks, not sure how to comfort him but knowing Zeke must be going through a lot in his head right now.

"The last few days have been just, a constant mindfuck and it's getting to me, I must admit." Zeke replies then slightly aggressively starts the car. Tyler puts his seat belt on and watches Zeke wearily as he turns the car around and starts driving back towards the base. "Did he say anything to you while I wasn't in the room?" Zeke asks.

"No." Tyler lies, not wanting Zeke to have any reason to question him about the insinuation Wyatt had made that they knew each other. He wanted Zeke to trust him, he needed that, and until they got more answers about what was going on with Wyatt, Tyler didn't want to add to Zeke's confusion. The situation didn't need to get worse. As they drive, Tyler keeps glancing at Zeke's hand, which was gripping the clutch so hard his knuckles were white. Hoping it'd help and not be completely insensitively timed, Tyler gently places his hand on Zeke's, looking out the window with a small smile to himself. Zeke looks down at Tyler's hand, then at the smile on his face as he purposefully looked away.

"It's not because he's my ex that I care. I just feel like G is messing with my head right now." Zeke explains, not wanting Tyler to have thought he was upset because he still had feelings of some kind. He thinks back to his conversation in G's office, 'sentiment goes out the window when faced with betrayal.' Perhaps this was G's way of testing whether he meant that or not, and it seemed like he failed the test after all, just with Wyatt instead of Tyler.

"You're still allowed to care." Tyler smiles over at Zeke. “You’re a lot of things Zeke, and whether you admit it or not, you are not heartless.”

“Honestly, I’m surprised you think so. I’ve done some very heartless things.”

“Are you talking about Wyatt? Because I don’t think you are heartless. I think you were cold. Clearly you’ve got a lot of heart in that relationship. That’s why you are worried, right?”

Well, just like you, he got dragged into this. So of course I don’t want anything bad to happen to him. He had no reason being a part of any of this. And yeah, he screwed me over, but I screwed him over first. If I get hurt, I deserve it. No matter what is going on, he's doesn't deserve to be hurt." Zeke rubs his forehead, completely stressed out by this whole situation.

"See, you're compassionate." Tyler points out.

“Yeah to a fault I guess.” Zeke sighs.

I don’t think being compassionate is a fault. I think it’s one of your best qualities, actually.” Tyler replies smiling fondly at Zeke.

"Mm, I cannot wait to hear G's explanation for all of this." Tyler sighs.

"If we even get one." Zeke shrugs. The rest of the drive they both spend just considering their own concerns from the night. Tyler was trying to process and understand where Wyatt had gotten the idea that they were on a team against Zeke, and Zeke was trying to work out how many ways he could murder G for doing this to him.

They arrive back at the base, brimming with questions and built up frustration. Marching towards G's office together, determined to get to the bottom of this and without even having to discuss it first they both knew they would team up against G if they found out there was some insidious reason behind his latest excuse for a 'mission'. Zeke knocks on the door and waits while Tyler can't help but laugh at the fact they had stormed up there just to politely knock and wait to be invited in. Zeke frowns at Tyler for a moment but can't help but smile as Tyler apologizes and tries to compose himself back to being pissed off.

"Come in." G calls. Zeke opens the door, walking in quickly and the moment Tyler comes in after him, he slams the door and again, Tyler has to stop himself laughing at the fact their 'burst in and demand answers' tactic had been slowed down by manners. “How did you guys go?” G asks as casually as ever.

“You are aware that Wyatt is living in that safe house, aren’t you?” Zeke starts the questioning straight away.

"Yes, of course. How is he?” G's calmness is infuriating to the point that Zeke doesn't exactly know how to respond to it. Thankfully Tyler had something to say immediately.

“Scared out of his fucking mind. Because some asshole here thinks it's a good idea to send two armed people to his house without telling them that there was someone that lived in there. So of course we burst in to see who the hell was breaking in. And scare the absolute shit out of him.” Tyler snaps, way more annoyed about this than Zeke expected.

“Did he fight you?” G asks, ignoring Tyler's tone and attitude.

“Of course he did. We were intruders in his home. You really need to stop putting people in situations where they feel threatened just to see if they will fight or fall apart. I don’t care what your excuse is, you do not do that to people. It is disgusting...” Tyler continues his rant but G cuts him off, not interested in the lecture.

“Thank you Tyler, for your opinion. I want to hear from Zeke now. You’ve said enough. G states, Tyler smiles to himself and bites his tongue but is now significantly more annoyed.

“Why is Wyatt There? And what’s with the tracking device?” Zeke asks in a calm tone, sounding like he was genuinely going to give G the chance to explain himself. G sits back in his seat and smiles at Zeke as though he's impressed with his question. This was probably why Zeke was considered good at his job, because he asked questions and didn't just shoot. Kinder than he deserved, but that was Zeke, despite what he thought of himself and his actions, he definitely wasn't able to just turn off his consideration for other's points of views and motivations. Tyler felt himself, that the two of them made an interesting match because Zeke was willing to hear people out and Tyler was the one that would threaten to shoot them in the eye socket.

“Well Zeke as you identified during your confrontation with Wyatt, When he was last present here, he was under some pretty heavy mind altering substances, keeping him essentially 'under control'. We used the tracking device and sent him to the safe house to keep an eye on him because due to his long term use of these substances he's had complicated withdrawal symptoms that required supervision, for his wellbeing. He was identified as a danger to himself and unsafe to release back to the community as is our usual policy." G explains, being very oddly timed with his disclosure of this information.

“And you didn’t think any of that was important to tell us before we went there?” Tyler asks, annoyed. G glances at him but doesn't respond to the question.

“What withdrawal symptoms are we talking about?" Zeke asks, concern crossing his face. G sighs and finds the report Corey had given him.

"So he started with severe anxiety symptoms, loss of appetite, vivid nightmares which we believe are experiences he was a part of without being aware of his actions, because he was 'under control' at the time. These vivid dreams were then accompanied by hallucinations and black outs. He's made improvements, we're just monitoring whether or not he's going to relapse on any of these symptoms." G reads then puts the file down on his desk and looks back at Zeke, waiting for his response.

"I'm sorry, I know you said I've said enough but clearly Zeke respects you enough to not be calling you out on your shit right now. But are you seriously saying that you have a guy coming off a mind controlling substance, having hallucinations and severe anxiety and you sent two armed guys to his place in the dead of the night without informing us? Knowing full well that as we understood it, our job was to ensure no one was at the address, so when we saw someone arrive there we would obviously investigate that, and you've filled us with enough suspicion ourselves that the first thing we will assume is that this is a member of some mysterious rival network of bad guys, so we will respond to that accordingly. And at NO POINT did you think that maybe that is a great way to completely destroy this poor guys' mental health?! Who the fuck put you in charge of this institution?! You are the least responsible person I can think of to run a joint like this and you're playing with people like they are fucking puppets in your life. You cannot say you're monitoring him for his own wellbeing, while actively setting up a scenario in which to put him through hell." Tyler loses it at G, not a single piece of him willing to listen to whatever else G had to say, ever.

"He's highly trained. The simulation was to see if he would remember his training and be capable of fighting back or if he's been completely rehabilitated through memory wipes. It was a calculated..." G begins but Tyler cuts him off again.

"It was not a simulation. You sent us in there blind, you set him up and you set us up and I don't want any part of the shit you're doing to people anymore. From now on, you want to see if someone can fight back, you do the dirty work yourself. If we're lucky they will fight back and you'll be the one messed up by it for once. Step up and be a fucking man, you gutless piece of shit. You can fill in my position here because I am not going to work for you. Go fuck yourself." Tyler states and turns on his heel, storming out of the room with absolutely no care in the world for whether he'd face consequences for this.

Tyler stands in the shower, relaxing and trying not to think about what would happen to him now that G had no reason to keep him around. He suspected he'd be dragged away at some point, memory wiped and send to a torture house to be put through ridiculous tests just like Wyatt had been. He could only hope it'd be G breaking in to test him so he could fall back on his one week worth of training and be the one the killed him. Tyler gets out of the shower and wraps a towel around himself, exhausted by the mentally draining mission they'd been on, his mind swirling with confusing thoughts and knowing he'd not be able to sleep. A distraction shows itself, a knock on his door as he leaves the bathroom. Tyler walks over and opens the door to see Zeke standing there.

"Come to take me to have my memory wiped?" Tyler asks, half joking. He wouldn't blame Zeke if he was, he had a job to do, a job Tyler completely disagreed with, but he respected that Zeke was probably not being as blind to G as he was acting.

"God no." Zeke smiles at him. "Can I come in?" he asks, his eyes glancing down at the towel around Tyler's waist. Tyler steps back and opens the door wider to invite him in. Zeke walks in and just stands in the room looking at Tyler with a confusing expression as Tyler closes the door and looks back to him to ask what he wanted.

"So, I'm guessing I'm in trouble though." Tyler states with a careless shrug.

"You're definitely not in G's good books." Zeke smirks. "I've never seen anyone talk to him the way you did though, that was impressive. He was actually silenced by your comments for a few good moments after you left."

"What did he say after I left?" Tyler crosses his arms.

"We didn't talk about you, just discussed business matters. He is aware that his position here is under threat." Zeke replies with a sigh then walks over to Tyler. "Speaking of being under threat, I'd hate to be the person that pisses you off next." Zeke says in a flirty tone, reaching for Tyler's hand then walking backwards, bringing Tyler to the bed with him.

"How do you feel?" Tyler asks.

"I was hoping to show you." Zeke replies, reaching the edge of the bed and sitting down, pulling Tyler to sit on his lap. Tyler goes along with this, thrilled that this was finally happening. This was the distraction he needed from his confused thoughts and doubts about what was going on around him here. There were so many questions in his head and he wanted nothing more than to let Zeke fill his brain with better things to think about. The moment Zeke's lips touch his, he's granted just that. A swirl of excitement and hopes, of nerves and curiosity. He didn't know what Zeke was hoping for, but he runs through just about every possibility in his head and he's pretty sure he wont say no to any of them. Zeke holds him close and throws himself back on the bed then rolls so Tyler is below him. His hand glides down Tyler's body and breaks the kiss as he reaches the towel around Tyler's waist and feels the wave of nerves emulating from Tyler.

“Are you ok?” Zeke asks, making sure it was just nerves, and not some other reason that Tyler had started shaking below Zeke’s touch.

“Yeah.” Tyler nods quickly, his hands moving down Zeke’s body with a sense of confidence that seemed to be lost on the rest of him. Zeke kisses the corner of Tyler’s mouth, then he moves to his neck, leaving a trail of kisses until he reaches his ear.

“Tyler.” Zeke whispers and it’s almost too much, just hearing his name said in that tone, with hot breath on his neck and their bodies this close was so damn sexy that Tyler shuddered. “Don’t be nervous. I want to do this for you.” Zeke tells him. Tyler gulps and Zeke’s lips travel back to kiss his softly. “Are you comfortable with me pleasing you?” Zeke whispers before kissing him again. Tyler was hesitant on answering, not because he didn’t want to, but because he’d never been the one the focus was on. “I won’t do anything until you say yes.” Zeke assures him.

“I’ve just never.” Tyler gulps again, his body was screaming yes, his brain was screaming ‘shut the fuck up and let this man do whatever he wants to you'.

“So, your ex really never reciprocated?” Zeke asks with a slight smirk. Tyler shakes his head, his eyes locked on Zeke’s. “Well, I’d really like to make up for that, if you want me to.” Zeke tells him. So far all he’d done was kiss him, and ask for consent but Tyler felt like he was already about to lose himself. Tyler nods at Zeke, absolutely dying with the anticipation that was coursing through him. Zeke smiles and kisses him again teasingly delicate. “Can you say it for me?” Zeke asks.

“Yes.” Tyler breathes, somehow managing to exude being shy, anxious and desperate all in one word. Zeke kisses him slowly this time, sweeping his tongue across Tyler’s lips until he’s welcomed to deepen the kiss by Tyler eagerly parting his lips. Zeke's hand reaches the bottom of the towel and starts sliding up along his thigh. Zeke smiles as he feels how much Tyler was enjoying this. He himself was enjoying the kiss so much he almost couldn’t decide what he wanted more, to keep doing this or to see how good the rest of him tasted. While he wishes he could clone himself and be able to kiss Tyler and go down on him all at once, he groans into Tyler’s mouth and it causes Tyler to suddenly clutch at him, nails digging in slightly. With a grin, he can tell he’s going to miss his chance at the latter if he continues indulging in Tyler's lips, so Zeke takes a moment to let Tyler cool off a little, pulling back and just listening to each eager breath, the only thing keeping the room from being silent. Zeke painfully slowly, runs his hands across the top edge of the towel, finding where he'd tucked it in. Zeke makes eye contact with Tyler as if making sure this was still ok, before he undoes the towel, leaning back down to kiss Tyler as he moves the towel to leave Tyler completely naked beneath him. This time Tyler is significantly more nervous as Zeke's lips leave his again.

“Relax. And don’t worry about stopping me unless you’re uncomfortable, ok?” Zeke says as he moves down the bed, stopping at Tyler’s waist. Tyler watches him place a teasing kiss just in from his hip, Tyler’s whole body flinches in response to the rush of tingles that were shooting through his body. Tyler closes his eyes, taking deep breaths as Zeke’s lips trail from one hip all the way to the other, kissing, licking and biting softly. He wanted to hurry Zeke up, to get to the best part, but also to freeze time and just be tormented on the edge like this forever. He had no idea if he was going to enjoy what Zeke planned to do, but he knew he wanted to do this as often as humanly possible for the rest of his life.

Only moments later, he feels Zeke’s mouth on him and everything else just fades away, leaving him feeling like he’s floating in a world where nothing but this moment existed. Finally he was able to know how good this felt to receive and he now felt much less resentful of his ex being so indulgent because this did feel worth being completely selfish about. If Zeke was going to insist that Tyler had to just lie back and enjoy this then he wasn't going to argue. Tyler spends the next few minutes hoping he is able to memorize this feeling just in case this is a one-off occurrence with Zeke, who was being very, extremely, unapologetically unprofessional right now. Zeke gives a lustful groan as he takes Tyler to cloud 9, his own mind not yet caring at all for the consequences of tonight. He’d not take this back for anything, not as he hears the expletives being gasped from Tyler's lips and his fingers clutching and pulling at handfulls of his hair. No matter what, that alone was making this worth any risk. Zeke takes a few moments to slowly wind Tyler down before he moves back up the bed and lies beside him, smiling as he listens to the heavy breathing getting back to normal.

There was no reason why that couldn’t happen again, as long as no one found out about it, and Zeke had every intention of making up for the time that he’d wasted trying to keep a professional distance between them. Why he’d been avoiding letting anything happen with Tyler felt completely pointless right now. He knew logic was somewhere, pushed aside and told to be quiet and wait it’s turn while lust took control, and at some point he’d probably have to sit down and think through whether this was smart or completely stupid. It didn’t feel like either right now, it just felt incredible. As time passes and Tyler comes back to reality he breaks the silence.

"Z?" He asks quietly.

"Yeah?" Zeke looks at him and Tyler doesn't know now whether to continue talking or not.

"I'm not just saying this because of that. But, just in case my memories are wiped tomorrow and all that I just want to make sure I've said this to you first." Tyler pauses, feeling like he was burning up now that he'd committed to his statement.

"Tyler..." Zeke sighs.

"I'm falling for you." Tyler blurts out before he can backtrack and regret not saying it. Zeke looks at him as though he's disappointed, then lets out a sigh and looks back up at the ceiling. "I am not expecting you to say it back, I just didn't want it left unsaid, you know? Just in case." Tyler shrugs, playing off Zeke's less than enthusiastic response.

"There's things I wish I could say to you, but you have to understand that my feelings for you could put you in danger. That's the only reason I'm not saying anything back. I don't want my feelings to compromise your safety." Zeke tells him, rolling over and looking into his eyes, regretting that for now his feelings would have to remain unspoken.
