Enigma - 26. Epilogue - The End

I sing while I cook... well cooking is, I suppose, the wrong word. I stick some nachos with grated cheese under the grill, fill some taco trays with salad and home made salsa and put it all on a tray with a bag of sea salt kettle chips, a couple of store bought dips and two cans of diet coke. For good measure I throw in a tub of tutti frutti ice cream and two spoons.

Struggling with the tray I stagger through the door and then almost drop it. The room is empty. Like a complete moron I stand in the doorway and look around... as if I am going to find him under a cushion.

I am momentarily and irrationally frozen with fear. My mind is racing. Could he have gone into the bathroom while my back was turned? I look over my shoulder but the door is open and the light off. Then where... what?

Putting the tray down on the table I run up the stairs taking them two at a time and get to the top sweating and panting. I almost pass out when I see the door of the bedroom door open the light on. Shit!

Leaning against the wall at the top of the stairs until my heart and breathing calm down I berate myself for over reacting. When I am calm I walk into the bedroom to find Silver tucked up in bed, sitting up against a wall of pillows looking flushed, exhausted but triumphant.

“You scared the crap out of me. What the hell did you think you were doing?”

Unabashed he grins at me. “That bed downstairs is too small and cramped. I wanted to sleep in your arms tonight.”

My fear and anger disappear in and instant. It is like all my birthdays, Christmas and holidays have come on the same day I win the lottery.

“So what’s brought all this on? I mean for the last two weeks you haven’t wanted to know and suddenly...” I stop at the stricken look on his face. “I’m sorry babe... I didn’t mean for that to come out as a criticism. It’s not as if I’m not happy about it.”

“You’re right though. I... I’m sorry River. It was just... I got caught in a loop. I don’t know if it was because I was so tired and in pain and scared... but I...” He sighs. “I felt so guilty. Maybe it was because I keep surviving and... and David didn’t. I got my life back and he... I couldn’t get past it and I was so caught up in my pain... I didn’t want anything to make me feel good. I didn’t feel like I deserved to be happy... and you make me happy.”

I sit down on the bed next to him and take his hand. “I understand Silver, I really do. You’ve been through such a lot. I can’t even imagine what it must have felt like, what you feel like now. I love you and I just want what’s best for you. I was scared, that’s all. I have never been so scared in my life. I thought I was going to lose you. You were slipping away in front of my eyes and there was nothing I could do about it. I did everything I could think of and nothing seemed to touch you.”

“I couldn’t let it River. I was so locked away in my pain. I knew that if I opened up and let you in I wouldn’t be able to hold on to it and I thought that meant that I wouldn’t be able to hold on to David either and that scared me.”

“You should have talked about it.”

“I know.” He sighs deeply. “I’ve never been very good at that, talking about the way I feel, the things that are going on inside my head.”

“Will you promise to try and do that from now on?”

“Of course I will. I don’t know how well I’ll do but I promise I will try.”

“That’s all I can ask. You’re okay now, aren’t you? You’re not going to shut me out again?”

He smiles that sexy smile again. “What do you think?”

The ice that I hadn’t noticed was forming around my heart ever since the moment we saw the black car on the cliff path, melts and evaporates. I feel calm and happy as I have never done before.

“I think I am a very lucky man.”

“I was thinking the same thing again.”

“Are you still hungry?”

“A little.”

“I’ll go and get the tray then.”

“Can you get me some of my pain meds?”

I sigh exaggeratedly. “You hurt yourself didn’t you... coming up here?”

“It was worth it.”

Silver surprised me...and himself... by eating heartily and enjoying every bite. He hasn’t been eating much lately but he sure made up for it today.

Almost as soon as he finishes eating he starts to drift off to sleep. Smiling down at his sleepy face I have to touch it and he stirs.

“Sleepy.” He murmurs softly.

“I know you are babe. Let me just put the tray on the floor and I’ll be right back. Try not to fall asleep before I get there.”

He mumbles something that I don’t hear and I practically throw the tray onto the floor and switch off the light. As an afterthought I throw open the curtains so the room is flooded with moonlight and I can see his face clearly. He is never so beautiful as he is under the moonlight.

His eyes are closed and I wriggle down so my face is next to his on the pillow, breathing in his breath and drowning in his beauty.

He stirs when I stroke his face and smiles without opening his eyes. “Sleep now.”

“Yes baby... sleep now.”

He makes a cute little sleepy noise and cuddles into me. In that moment nothing matters, nothing that has happened is important any more, nothing exists except Silver and me and he is everything I want, everything I need. I am perfectly happy.

The End.

Paintings.. I loved Silver's expressions in paintings!!!

River is an angel (not only a carer)... i think that should be said!! he he ;)

Hadn't read it before when it was in E-fic... (not before I HAD to..) i was still finishing up the other stories...

Which is good because I am the first one to review here!! YAY! thumbsupsmileyanim.gifthumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Bah! i don't think I'll ever be able to complain about my life being unfair to me, ever again!! I feel POSITIVELY blessed! thank you for making me see that at least! I happen to be an eternally optimistic person, so i look past everything and try to see the best.. Here too, I've tried.. I say tried, because, all i have come up with is that I'm Blessed and will always think twice (maybe even thrice) before i complain about my troubles bringing me down!

Complaining about the problems I've had so far! God what a brat I've been!!! Thank you for taping my eyes open!! worshippy.gif

Thank you for Enigma.. really... worshippy.gif

I cant stop thinking about the pair of them!

Yes, River is an angel, except in the second book, the one you edited, he has somewhat tarnished wings :)I think it often wise to compare your life to others who are worse off - it's something my mother drummed into me and yes, somethimes it helps but in the end it's all relative. Can't see you as a brat hun?Thank you so much for the first review of my absolutely favourite story

This was when I read it and still is to this day one of my favourite stories on here. It pretty much cemented you on my readin list after you hooked me with Hostage and intrigued me with Love in Chains.

I loved River from the start when we first met him although Silver was by far my favourite of the 2. I think he had the mystery and the charm and then when it came down to it he was also downright dirty in a good way :D.

It speaks alot that with all that you have written and the other stories that you have given us this is still one of my favourite reads. Hell you even got a tear out of me and for that reason alone id give this story 5 shotglasses out of 5

Have to say I did get to read it all in 1 sitting which means I got to miss out on what I can imagine was some harsh cliffies that would have had me cursing you and generally making a nuisance of myself but to anyone whose thinkin about it or hasnt checked this out yet you really should and as for Enigma 2 im both nervous of and eagelry anticipating its iarrival

YAY you found how to review. And what a review. I so loved it. There is still a little time to wait though. I have to finish Fallen first and then, we'll see :) Does this count as a cliffie

Well Enigma. What do i say about it.

Freaking amazing. I thought you could never top 'Dangerous Liasons' but you went and did it.

I LOVE SILVER. I WANT TO RUN AWAY WITH HIM AND DO THINGS TO HIM :P

If only he was real :(

I just think there is so much coming and i'm afraid of what River is going to become. Knowing you it will all turn out fine...

Right?

Right?

Knowing me it will all turn out fine? Are you crazy? No, in this one it won't turn out 'fine'. It will turn out just like the real world does... what must be will be.

Well...Enigma... I cant write essays for reviews because whatever I say never pays homage to it enough.

I hadnt read much if any of your stuff before Enigma to be honest so I had a clear mind going into it.

The emotions I went through in that story, the feelings it evoked, you have a way of touching people's hearts Nephy and it is a wonderful gift.

It was an incredible story, and one which everyone should read.

On the otherhand I am anxious to know what you are doing to deal them in the sequel.

Fantastic story Nephy, truly a great piece of work! Thank you so much for sharing this story with us :D

I'm really, really glad you liked this story because I loved writing it and living it. Silver is an awesome person; the child in everyone. The sequel was such a joy to write. It's quite a journey for both of them but I think you'll like the way it all pans out even if you don't think you are going to.

I fell in love with both of your boys and I have a special place in my heart for David and Nikki too.

Definitely one of my all time favoutite stories. I can't wait to start Enigma II, although I wanna enjoy of the serenity that you left this story with for just a little while.

One thing was left to haunt me. Who was the faceless Master? I have a seriously bad feeling about the Master.

Thank you Nephylim!

People like that are always faceless. ^His legacy lingers on

I am proud of me. I resisted a review in some of the chapters that were so good they would have been able to stand on their own as a powerful short story. In a way, I am sorry I didn't, because now I can only relfect upon the story as a whole.

I think I understand why I didn't get involved right away in the first couple of chapters. I thought River presumptious. Carer; Extrodanaire. When he explained that words sometimes came out of him, when he didn't know why or how. That solidified his credentials in my mind. I trusted him when it came to "make or break". I considered the possible destinations; the half way house, Silver's childhood home, then Silver's gravesite, David's gravesite. It was only as I read the name inscribed did I realize for certain. And I am usually a good guesser (ruined a lot of movies, that way). When I finish this reveiw, I will be searching for more of you stories. Thanks so much for the emotional roller coaster.

more please

Thank you for that wonderful, thoughtful review. I'm glad you grew to appreciate River. He is often overlooked, I think; being in Silver's shadow in a way. I would caution you that not all my stories are like this. They are all very different in their own way and although they all tend to be emotional roller coasters some of them are very dark, violent and/or strange. Happy reading. There is one thing you can be sure of... with me there is always more :)

I believe I have a confession to make...

Last night (or actually, this morning xD), I read this story all the way to chapter 14, planning to go to sleep afterwards. However, I so happen to be more curious than is sometimes good for me, and I could not resist the temptation of reading on after all. (Except I more or less skimmed through it all.) It wasn't until I read 'The End' that I stopped and went to bed. At half past 3 in the morning... *blush*

All in all, it comes down to something very simple: Nephy, you're awesome! This story kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish and I had to wipe the tears from my eyes more than once. And let it be known that I barely ever cry when reading a story, so you did a phenomenal job with Enigma!

I think River and Silver are my new favorite pairing xD I'm really looking forward to reading Enigma II. Let's see what more you have in store for them

GULP what can I say to that. Thank you so much. I am SO glad that you like my Silver and River. Um... I hope you won't hate me when you read book II

I'm not very good at writing things like reviews, but I'm going to put extra effort into this one.

As much as I love Silver, and appreciate what he lived through, I have to say that I rather liked River more. I can't really explain why, but I do.

This story was edgy, sweet, and very exciting. I had trouble tearing myself away even just to pee. It gripped me right from the start, and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

I must confess, though, that I peeked at the last chapter before I delved into this story. You see, I prefer reading things that have a happily ever after (or at least a happily for now), because I tend to get emotionally involved with the characters and the story. So when I started reading this, I already knew the ending.

However, that did not, in any way, diminish the story, or lessen the impact. I loved this story thoroughly and completely, and I will probably end up reading it again some day.

I am rather terrified to read Enigma II, though. If I do, I will most likely peek at the end just like I did here. But I like this story, and I love the characters, that I might end up reading Enigma II even if I find it doesn't end as happily.

Oh, and, one more thing. I hereby proclaim you as one of my all-time favorite authors. :P

I beg to differ that you aren't good at writing reviews. At least in my opinion you write great ones. It's clear you've got deeply into the story and that is just about the best thing anyone can say about any of my stories. (Ssh don't tell but Enigma II is one hell of a roller coaster but stick with it because it ends even better than this one :) )

Spellbound and captivated are the 2 greatest words I can use to convey how I was while reading this story. You never fail to deliver a heart wrenching, edge of your seat, tantalizing and thoroughly enjoyable story that one can get so wrapped up in that time just seems to slip away without realizing it. I loved it and plan to rereaed it again.
I'm really glad you enjoyed this one because it's my favourite I'm TOTALLY in love with Silver. Always have been and always will. I'm working on Book IV at the moment and that's unheard of for me who'd never so much as written a sequel before :) Thank you so much for all your reviews.

I absolutly love this story. It is one of my now faverates here or anywhere. I very much look forwards to reading more of your work. Have to admit that after the police raid you started to lose me but you gave it a very appropriate ending. Very impressed that you did not bring niki into the story more like many would have been tempted to and that River rarly talkd about it even later on says a lot about him. My one tangable complant i only realise in retrospect that the world seems to lean gay, but i would want my world like that anyway. You did a great job describing how someone realy is after such an experience and for that i thank you, it realy made the story great.

Thank you hun, for your comment and for your honesty. The only thing I don't understand is what you say about the world being gay. Apart from the slaves/ex slaves only River is gay-- oh and I guess Nikki was and Sam's son.

This was a really good story. All those horrible people and the awful things they did to those people. How does some one just think that that's ok?! Anyways, even after all the shit he went thru and is still going thru Silver sounds like a really wonderful person. I didn't review before because I wanted to read the whole first.

I went through a wide range of emotions in this story. I cried a lot sometimes they were good tears though. It was a very enjoyable read over all. My husband always looks at me weird when he's like what are you reading as I'm grabbing for the tissue box. But that's really what makes a good story... Being connected to the characters. Feeling their emotions.

You had me hooked by the second chapter and three in the morning I'm still hooked. It was an emotional ride from start to finish. Silver and River fast became my favorite couple can't wait to read Enigma ll. But need to sleep and I know if I start I won't stop, you are to damn good at this hehe :2thumbs:
Thank you. Silver and River are definitely my favourite couple too, although River gets pushed aside I'm afraid by my utter adoration for his lovely boyfriend :) I'm looking at a painting of him right now and my heart is a flutter. Yeah, so i'm crazy, so what :) thank you so much for your kind words.
