Cadet Cruise

____________

"Because, I'm leaving you", Jorgensen choked out.

"But why? Did we do something wrong?", Gary asked with silent tears running down his face.

"No boys, it's orders. We're supposed to turn you guys over to civilian specialists to make sure you are all OK. Then we have to go through the formal adoption process. It might take a while but I'm going to do all that I can to give you a real home."

Jerry asked, "Is there anything we can do to speed things up?"

Jorgensen said, "You are two great kids. Just be yourself, they'll love you."

Gary sniffed and wiped his nose. "We understand orders. You don't have to like them, you just have to obey. Just... stay with us?"

The big Sergeant just nodded and hugged the two boys he had come to love. Turning them over to shrinks and doctors was one of the most difficult orders he had ever received but he knew it was necessary.

He looked up and around and saw that his whole platoon was having similar difficulties. The battalions last month of duty on Pelenor had been working with the Gemini soldiers and, it had been some of the most rewarding duty of his career.

At first the Gemini boys had been all soldier. They ran, they drilled and then they ran some more. Hardened drill instructors found them almost impossible to keep up with. The Marines had to teach them how to have fun but, they were quick studies.

They still had a lot to learn- like body modesty. Growing up in a barracks environment they had absolutely none.

Girls and women were another mystery that they were yet to discover. Jorgensen thought to himself: good luck with that one boys.

Jorgensen and his boys joined a long line of very emotional boys and marines as the Battalion turned their charges over to the civilian specialists who had been brought in.

When they reached the processing station, Gary and Jerry stood at attention and delivered parade ground sharp salutes. Jorgensen returned it and waited until the boys were inside the ship.

On his way back to the Battalions bivouac, Colonel Sharp was standing with several civilians. Jorgensen saluted them and the Colonel asked, "Gunney could you come over here a minute?"

Jorgensen said, "What can I do for you sir?"

The Colonel said, "This is a fact finding delegation from the Alliance senate. I understand that your platoon has been with the Gemini kids from the start?"

"Yes sir. We were first in and we've been with the kids for the past four weeks."

One of the Senators asked, "What do you think sergeant? Will those kids ever be normal?"

Jorgensen was no fool. "Permission to speak candidly sir?"

"By all means Gunney. We understand that you have the most experience with them."

"Don't expect them to be normal sir. They are going to be extraordinary. My wife and I were talking about having some more kids before we deployed. I hope that my application will be at the top of the list when they allow adoptions."
