I have a couple - it’s kind of addictive finding things to do with them.  And no, I’ve never got as far as a ‘need’ for one :)

We built our own NAS box with a pi 3. Accessible through commands on my  Mac.

raspberry pi?  it's a "toy?"

It’s a small single board computer. Using the pi and external HD we built a network attached storage server for media and files.
