'Who am I?' and 'I am the Answer'

I have never, ever shared my poetry with other people before, but here is a small sample of it.

 

Who am I?

When I cry, the world Watches

The world Judges

When I smile, the world Sneers

The world Mocks

Who am I?

I am a product of their condemnations

They look at me with those eyes,

and they see only my flaws

My soul lays naked before them

and they clothe it as they see fit,

as they want me to be

Who am I?

I am a template for them to recreate themselves

I look down at my hands,

and they are not mine

I look into the mirror,

and I see a stranger

These are the hands they want them to be

This is the face I am told to wear

Who am I?

I am tangled mess of self-deceit

It is just one in a long line of masks I have hidden behind

Every one thrown out as I fail them time and again

Day after day, year after year, I dance as they pull the strings

I am a replaceable cog in an efficient machine

Who am I?

I am but a means to their end

Who am I?

I turn to ask them this and they say nothing

They say nothing, because that is what I am

I am not unique; I have become the masks I wear

I know who I'm not: me

But I still don't know who I am

I am the Answer

There is no 'I' in 'team,' they tell me

But I don't want to be on a team

I want to fly solo. I want the spotlight on me

And I deserve this

I am who I am in spite of them

They told me to follow the rules,

But I showed them how to break them

I will not be caged,

I will not let them mold me into who they want me to be

I am my own god

I shape my own destiny

My genius soars in the face of their mediocrity

They cringe at the thought of individual achievement

They ask me why I don't credit them

But I don't reply

Because I did it on my own

Because I am the answer

I do not waver in the face of their accusations

Because I am secure in my own skin

Because I don't need their approval

Because I am the answer

Overall, I like "I Am The Answer" better than the first. It has a powerful ring to it.

I'm not a great poem reviewer but I think that these two are really good. I especially like the first one. It's amazing!!! So well-said, so true. Many times, we think about 'people' and not us. We forget ourself and allow ourselves to mould according to them. Great!

the first poem was so damn close to my heart...because sometimes i feel that is the life i'm living. similarly the second one too touched me, as that is what i strive to be...

Wow! I'm glad you all liked the poems. Like I said, I have never really shared any of my poetry before, but perhaps I will post some more later.

 

I wrote the first poem a couple years ago, when I wasn't in such a great place in my life. The second poem was written just a little while ago, and reflects how I've come to think about myself.

I thought the 2nd one seemed more like the "Menzo" I know. It's hard to say which is my favourite of the two. I found them both very compelling and evocative.
