My favourite commercial of all time is this Coca Cola 1971 Classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8H5263jCGg

 

Many people prefer the 1984 version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X23MoTtVplE because from an audio standpoint it sounds better. But it just doesn't resonate with me.

 

The original song "I'd like to teach the world to sing" was popular, but the commercial's soundtrack was released as a successful single later the same year; it reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. Barry Manilow used to claim he actually wrote the melody for this song, but there's no proof of that -- though he did write many popular jingles in his day.
