but of course it failed self publishers with the grey area of editors and beta readers and remuneration and rights

Haha Of course with the internet and ebooks, people are finding ways around this. I've let Amazon recommend some godawful stuff to me (no more, Amazon!) . . . a lot of the free stories here are better!
