Chapter 1 Music Recs

-When Wade deals with the rush of emotions that comes with finding out that he's now a father.

I was originally going to use "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed, but I decided to go with something a little less obvious.

-When Wade talks on the phone to his mother.

"Beautiful Day" by U2

-When Tiffany dumps Jeanine.

"Bye, Bye, Bye" by N'Sync

God, look at baby-faced Justin Timberlake there. Damn, I'm old.

I commented earlier in the Paternity topic but will touch on it here as well. Music by Madonna came out in September of 2000 and went to number one in 25 countries and sold over 15 million copies. It was in my opinion the best album released that year. The mix of dance, fusion, funk, and jazz on the album was amazing. It also had one of the best remakes of a classic song of all times in American Pie, while this was not released on the copies of the US album it was on the international copies.

You could not go into any club, gay or straight, in the last few months of that year without hearing multiple songs off of this album. It was both a commercial and critical smash. I know how cliched that a gay man loves Madonna but if that year produced nothing else it produced one of the best Madonna albums ever, and for me, that is saying a lot....

That's right. Which is why I used "Music" for a scene in Millenium, and "Don't Tell Me" for a scene in Poor Man's Son.

I'm actually looking forward to using Linkin Park. They were, in my opinion, the first big rock band that came out in the 2000's.

I really like Linkin Park's first album, Hybrid Theory, I know it was released at the end of 2000. I think the two best songs on the album were never released as singles, By Myself and Pushing Me Away. I agree that this was one of the best debut albums ever. I haven't liked the follow up albums as well, actually really disliked A Thousand Suns. I like the idea behind the album and some of the songs would work as poetry or prose for me but musically just hated it.... Of course years to go before you would have to deal with that album or Minutes to Midnight...

I'm looking forward to 2001 and the rise of Alicia Keyes. She was definitely a breath of fresh air when she first came out. 2001 was a decent year. 2002 kinda sucked, but the White Stripes really elevated it. And 2003 was just awesome.

My "era", so to speak, would be from about 2003 to 2008, i.e. when I was 17 to about 22 years old. There's just something about the music that you listened to when you were coming of age that always holds a special yen in your heart.

My main "like" for this start-of-the-2000's era would be poppy punk stuff like Blink 182. I'm looking forward to when I can use Brand New:

This was like, the best high school angst song ever.

Chapter 2

-When Gathan describes his dramatic teenaged breakup to everyone.

-When Wade realizes the depth of his bond to his child.

"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams

-When Tiffany and Jeanine have another blowout.

Remember when Pink used to be all ghetto? Damn, she changed like woah when 2002 rolled around.

-When Tiffany meets La Danfield.

That Pink song was a really good pick. It has that "bitchy lesbian" feel to it. *ducks*

Well, considering that it's been speculated for years that Pink is a lesbian, or at least a bisexual, that works well.

Chapter 3

-When JJ lashes out at the family over the Tiffany and Jeanine situation.

I fucking love this song because it nails exactly the kinds of emotions you have when you watch your parents breaking up. I'm tickled pick I was actually able to use it for JJ. Thanks for that scene, Mark.

-When we learn that Tiffany's dad was involved in a 1983 plot to blow up the U.S. Senate. And that Tiffany's mother killed herself.

"Owner of A Lonely Heart" by Yes

-When we learn that an 18-year old Tiffany was involved in a 1994 burgalry incident with Nicole Bobek, and got sold down the river by her friend.

-When we learn that all is not well with Matt and Wade.

I consider that the video that jumpstarted puberty for me. Due to my pubescent crush on Brian Littrell I'll always have a soft spot for elfin-looking guys.

Chapter 4

-When Will and JJ bitch at each in the car, Will gets all whiny inside, and Will realizes that he got screwed over by his friend Jason.

-When a desperate Will puts aside his dislike of douchey Ryan Grafton, and asks him to be his camping partner for the upcoming 9th grade camping retreat.

-When JJ makes the call that his mom needs to go to the hospital.

So...I'm wondering...can you guys tell I had poppy punk friends in middle school, with a sister who did rave promotions? LOL.

The Yes song was a great flashback for me. And you even fit another BSB song in. I thought you ran through all of them.

I picked the Yes song because it was in the cold open of a Cold Case episode about a woman who gets killed by a bomb in 1983. Cold Case can REALLY influence the kind of music I picked, especially when we were doing music for the 80's and early '90s.

That particular BSB song, for whatever reason, was hard to find on youtube for a good amount of time.

Chapter 5

-When Wade and Matt have a little morning love, then fight in the woods.

-When Wade almost leaves Matt's ass in the woods.

An 80's flashback! If I keep writing stories in 2000-2001, will you eventually have to resort to 50's doo wop? Posted Image

The funny thing is, I didn't even know "Tenderness" was from 1985. I thought it originated in the 1995 movie, Clueless. So Wade and Matt would definitely know that song because of the movie. Clueless was one of those "generation-defining movies" that represented the end of the grunge era and the beginning of the 90's economic boom, as seen in the scene where grungy Tai is made over into a Beverly Hills Betty. As well as Cher's constant mocking of Josh, the stereotypical college grunge guy.

Chapter 6

-When Matt and Wade talk on the way back.

-When Matt and Wade go back to their freshman year dorm to chill with the new guys.

-When Wade loses it after finding out that Matt told him about what happened with his dad.

Just Go by Staind

Chapter 7

- Matt's ringtone theme.

-When Wade goes to one of Cody's Hollywood parties.

Moby got a hell of a lot of play out of that one album. Just hit after hit. He pretty much dominated the non-pop and non-rap world from about '99 to '01 because of that album.

Chapter 8

-When we meet Ryan Grafton's mother.

-When Ryan and Will see "Remember the Titans".

Ain't No Mountain High Enough from Remember the Titans

I'm kinda surprised Will wasn't that into the movie. If I remember correctly, that was a pretty popular movie with a lot of guys my age. Then again, those guys were jocks, and Will doesn't really have jock mentality. I'm sure Ryan loved it. Still, I'm kinda disappointed- we finally get a generation-appropriate reference, and it's not even that well-liked by the character. *sigh* Will's going to at least get really into Jackass, right?

-When Will and Ryan get stoned, and Will decides to re-write the past year of his sex life.

Will's grown up on movies, so he's more jaded than that. Ryan has his own reasons for being a little calmer about it. Jackass: I'll have to remember to work that in.

Jackass premieres on October 1, 2000. For some reason or another, it really struck a chord with young boys, like South Park had a few years earlier. I remember a friend I had in 8th grade who used to always wear a Johnny Knoxville shirt.

Apparently it also resonated with gay men who thought the situations where homoerotic, but I never picked up on that. I was 14.

It wasn't, it was just totally dumb... I was in my 30's when the show started so maybe that was why I just didn't get it at all....

*shrugs* It was on this retrospective that VH1 did once called "Totally Gay" about how homoerotic and totally gay culture had gotten, back in '03 during the whole "Queer Eye For the Straight Guy" metrosexual craze. I gotta admit, I'm kinda glad that chest hair made a comeback, and guys aren't doing the drag queen eyebrows like they used to. Although facials and mani-pedis can stay around.

2003-2004 really is going to provide Mark a whole hell of lot of material, both historical and pop-culture wise, and it conveniently coincides with JJ and Will's senior year of high school.
