Japanese "eyeball licking" trend carries blindness risk

A strange trend among Japanese school-aged children and teens -- licking a friend or lover's eyeballs -- may be perplexing, but experts are more worried about the germs they are potentially spreading.

"This is a dangerous practice which has the potential to spread a number of bacteria that reside in the mouth to the eye resulting in bacterial infections such as conjunctivitis to styes as well as abscesses involving the lids and eye socket," Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, told CBSNews.com.

Eyes can also get herpes infections too.  We already have an epidemic of oral cancers from fellatio and cunnilingus.  Damn, maybe I should go be a hermit now.

I wouldn't call it epidemic, as far as I know it isn't even proven yet, there are just some indications. It's more likely you get hit by a bus. ;)

The human mouth is an astonishingly dirty place from a micro-biological perspective. It's a great place to grow bacteria with moisture, warmth and a variety of food sources plus the introduction of numerous alien bacteria while eating. There are thousands of tame bacteria that live there and a great many those can act badly if they move into another environment.

My mother had a long running infection in her eyes that took over a year to clear with powerful anti-biotics.

Many bacteria are developing resistance to anti-biotics because those drugs are being over used in the human population and the production of poultry and beef.

Anyone tried to lick my eyes would end up licking the ground.   I think those people gotta be stuck in stupid.  How else could they think up something so....deranged.

Yeah I get eyeball licking is gross but uh

Some of us lick butt holes : D

Yeah, see, that doesn't bother me in the least. It's gotta be one of those weird cultural things... Like how most of us have no problems eating chicken periods, or the muscles of large, grazing herbivores, but the idea of eating a small fluffy feline is completely unacceptable.

Just remember that Japan seems to be pretty...uh...repressed.  Tentacle rape anyone? DX

Aww come on! I'm sure we can find something in every culture. We won't judge a whole nation here, right?

As someone who has visited the country twice and spent most of their teens as a Japanophile, I can say that Japanese culture is beautiful, exciting, stimulating and completely bonkers from a Western perspective. It's a culture of extremes. There is no middle ground. Traditional cultural expressions are fascinating and beautiful, but when they take a Western expression (be it our art, food or porn) they make it their own in a completely unique and mostly incomprehensible way. They take all the sweets we make and make them sweeter. They take extreme forms of culture and make them more extreme (from pop music to heavy metal, high fashion to subculture). It has resulted in some of the weirdest and some of the best art and entertainment on the planet, IMO. This is in no way a bad thing. It is simply a true thing.
