Luiz Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 So, I'm about to start a new series. For myself, I can tell what calls me the most when I read something... it happens when I identify myself with the characters, or at least with the character who's narrating the story... and also when it catches my attention. And you, what makes you like a story the most? I'd like to know... thanks =D 2
Popular Post JamesSavik Posted September 8, 2016 Popular Post Posted September 8, 2016 Character is king. When you think of stories that you've read, it's characters that you remember. Luke Skywalker, Frodo Baggins, Dorian Gray, John Galt, Atticus Finch, Holden Caulfield, Randal Flagg, Ignatius J. Reilly, Ellen Ripley, Honor Harrington- a strong story hangs on strong characters. Or flawed characters. Or characters being themselves. 6
Mikiesboy Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Yeah agree with James .. the main character(s) need to be strong .. not necessarily nice or even pleasant but they need to be multi-sided and interesting. 2
Dayne Mora Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 There was a great discussion in the "Writer's Corner" sub-forum debating whether or not main characters needed to be likable. There were several reflections that you might find useful. I've found some other threads over there that helped me grow. 1
Luiz Posted October 12, 2016 Author Posted October 12, 2016 Hi, guys, I guess I tried to use all of that in my new series. Mostly, I guess it's what Mikiesboy said that I learnt at school.. let me see how to put that in English.. a complex character.. a character that starts bad and ends up good (or the opposite...). Really, character is king.. and the characters that get my attention the most are the complex ones in this sense, so, thanks again!
