I had plans to pack away the last few things from Christmas and we'd spoken about it most of this week. However, while I was out to take Thistle to his weekly visit to puppy camp mum started a different project. One I specifically asked her not to do but rather wait until tomorrow. She was far enough into washing floors and shifting furniture that there was little choice but complete the house cleaning today. May not seem like a big deal but my head was already beginning to ache and that was more strenuous activity than I wanted to do. Now I have a the migraine I was hoping to avoid and mum is wandering around being mopey. This is the third time in the last month that she has done this sort of thing. She doesn't seem able to adjust to a change in the routine. She's aging more quickly than I am prepared for. 4 1

Popular Post Marty Posted January 15, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 15, 2021 (edited) So... It's Friday is it? Now what does that mean? Oh, yes!! I means it's week 42 of my attempt to take a new monochrome (okay, black and white, if you insist) photograph each week for 52 weeks, and upload it to my Flickr account. I decided this week to use one showing the work I am doing trying to remove all the ivy, Russian vine, brambles and briars that have overgrown the roofs of the two old stone sheds in my garden. I took this photograph today, before I started work for the day. So it shows where I got to by the end of yesterday. It's taken from a different angle to the one I shared yesterday evening, and I think it shows quite well the damage I mentioned a few days ago that has been caused to the gable wall of the shed by the overgrowth. Which caused a few of you to worry that I might be putting myself in danger with the ladder. Edited January 15, 2021 by Marty Tidying up 8

I think that's even worse than the ivy that took over my neighbor's house at my old apartment. It was so bad it was growing inside the house Can the damaged walls be repaired? 3 3

As to whether it can be repaired: it probably could be, but it would involve quite a lot of effort. Probably the whole of the top half of it would need to be taken down and then rebuilt. I'm thinking that I may just take the whole of that wall down to ground level and completely remove that one of the two stone sheds. It's not as though I need a lot of storage space, anyway. There's the two story old stone cottage in the garden, not to mention the fact that I also own a two story storage area about the same size as the main dwelling house, and attached to it. Here's part of a screenshot from Google Street View showing the front of my property (the For Sale signs have long since gone). My dwelling house is to the right of the downspout, and the storage area to the left. (And, no, that's not my car) 8

Popular Post Marty Posted January 15, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 15, 2021 So today, I decided to work from the other side of the two sheds. The main reason for that was because the second shed still has its slate roof under all the overgrowth, but I suspect the timbers underneath may not be too sound, so I really don't want to try standing on it Currently, the doorway into that shed is blocked up, partly with ivy, and also with unmortared six inch (15cm) thick concrete blocks, which means I can't inspect the underside of the roof. I'll decide when I have everything cleared away whether the roof is sound or not. If the roof has to be removed, I hope to salvage the slates themselves without damaging them. If they're not going to be used to re-roof that shed, they may come in useful for repairing the roof of the old cottage (which is also slated). Although I have a number of slates that I rescued from the other stone shed that could be used for the cottage. Here's a photo I took of my progress just before dusk this evening, in which some of the slates are now visible. 7

It reminds me of a book I read in middle school. A young man inherits a handsome manor estate from his sole relative, whom he wasn't aware even existed until his uncle's lawyer contacts him. But as charming as the manor is, and as friendly as the villagers may be, the house holds more secrets than it appears. As I remember, it was more of a relaxing mystery than a suspenseful one. Also, the young man struck me as more of an observer than a hero. There was no rising action, no climax, and the finish left much to be desired, but I enjoyed it all the same. A pleasant walk in the garden can be just as interesting as an adrenaline-pumped hike in the mountains. 3 2
