So, I found a message board for dancers, or the parents of dancers. I saw one topic where parents were discussing what to feed their kids, since the little ones are always hungry after classes or a performance. Max is no different, and he just eats SO MUCH, always! :o We usually stop at the "Royal" burger joint after pickup from ballet class because it's nearby, and Max ends up eating so fast, I worry he might make himself sick. Then we go home, and several hours later, he STILL empties his plate at dinner!

I'm almost terrified at the thought of him hitting puberty, which is only a couple of years away. I also feel a bit guilty, because Max ends up eating so many "heavy" meals, and of course I want him to be healthy. How do I find a balance between caloric needs and wholesome foods?  :(

Hi Page,

I never had my own kids, unless you count the hundreds of students I taught in elementary and middle school.  However, being much older now, I have the same concerns about diet that you have for your Max.  I assume veggies are not a favourite food for a boy his age.  I still have problems with them myself.  Here in Asia, the foods are usually highly spiced, but have tons of veggies. Buddhists have a two week lent where all they eat are 100% vegetable, but using things like nuts and mushrooms with the right spices taste a lot like meats.  When I say spicy, I am not talking about hot spicy, just the use of spices.

I also use fresh herbs and ingredients in place of dry seasoning, ie finely minced garlic, onion, dill, parsley.  These add nutrients that dry spices don't have.  Some simple substitutes like low or no fat dairy products for things like sour cream and milk also works on kids as long as they like a recipe.  Most kids see lasagna and won't notice the cheese is low fat instead of the regular thing.  The spices tend to hide the difference.  I hope this helps a bit, a good diet to go along with Max's dancing is a great way to keep fit.

There are some great cooking blogs for this and for Asian foods.  One I can recommend for Thai food is Hot Thai Kitchen.  Pailin is an excellent cook, a native speaker of English and currently lives in Vancouver, BC.  Many of her dishes fit your needs, but not all.  I love the videos she makes demonstrating and explaining how to make these foods.  Take care of your Max, he sounds like a great kid with caring parents.😀

Hope you and your family the best.  Merry Christmas.  By the way, just wanted to say I think Max's lessons are a great idea.  (My mom signed me up at about the same age for ballroom dance lessons.  I loved to dance and appreciate ballet from those day on.)

I've been looking for books and movies about ballet dancing, or just dancing in general. However, most "serious" stories such as Center Stage, Mao's Last Dancer, Billy Elliot, etc, are too mature for a nine-year-old.

Hopefully you can at least find some more clips like the one you shared.  How is Sneakers?  Did you test to see if he is ticklish?🎄🎄🎄

Yup! I found some videos of Brady Farrar and Nolen Dubuc, both of whom are trained dancers. (And very handsome lads, I might add.)  :gikkle:

You got me curious, so I did a little research.  I did find this movie trailer for a film that might fit young Max.

You might want to check for the Green Sweet Chili Sauce used with seafood.  The touch of lime in it enhances most fish and seafood very nicely. It can be hot spicy, but if you make it yourself you can control if or how much heat it has.
