On the other hand, horses are not native to Australia, same as pigs, toads and loads of other introduced and invasive animals. If their numbers get decimated due to heat and drought, it might be good for native species who are more adapted to extremes ? 3 1 1

Rabbits are another one that Australia can do without. The white colonists brought them over as a food source, and inevitability, they escaped from their enclosures and did what comes naturally. Now they're almost as serious of a problem as the zebra mussels in the Great Lakes. 4 1 1

I would just add horses and man have been symbiotic for over 15,000 years, so they were introduced for a reason, but wild horses have been around since the beginning. They are extremely adaptable, and thrive in deserts and the far north. Water, though, is essential. Horses arrived in Australia the same time the first prisoners who settled there did, so I would be in favor of helping the ones that have become wild, survive. Of course, I'm biased. 8
Popular Post Timothy M. Posted January 24, 2019 Popular Post Posted January 24, 2019 (edited) how could I forget rabbits. They're a pest here too, but not as bad as in Australia. Yeah, I know what you mean, Gary. Horses are introduced in North America too, but no one considers them a pest. And they're not as bad as the really invasive species. Many towns along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers have competitions to catch Asian carp. If you're gonna get rid of an invasive species, you might as well have some fun with it. 5 1

And they're not as bad as the really invasive species. Actually the cattlemen out west do consider them a pest as they take up valuble grazing land. Now that fewer horses are needed for herding and there are regulations about catching wild ones, things tend to get out of control. 7
Popular Post Albert1434 Posted January 24, 2019 Popular Post Posted January 24, 2019 We have wild horses here in Nevada. My point with that story was that there isn't any water for any thing. That's from global warming. And cattlemen are driven by pure greed. Cattle are bad period 4 3

Popular Post bignick Posted January 24, 2019 Popular Post Posted January 24, 2019 I don't think we have to deal with many pests, other than the common rats, which are pests everywhere. But even they have to face their own predators, so Nature finds its balance one way or another. Stray cats and dogs are more of an issue than pests. It saddens and embarrasses the heck out of me to say local authorities seem oblivious to the situation. Or they don't care. 4 3
