According to the official Royal Family website, the Crown has held the right to claim ownership of all unmarked mute swans swimming in open waters across the country since the 12th Century1. In times gone by they were considered a noble bird, often eaten by the nobility until The Monarchy laid claim to them. Serving roast swan at the table was considered a statement of wealth. It is now illegal to eat swan, however as The Monarch is considered above the law King Charles could technically eat swan if he wished. 1 6
