It is never easy to lose a parent. In this short story, @kbois explores what losing your last parent to dementia might be like. Like many families, there is a bit of dysfunction amongst the adult children. It provides a backdrop for interpersonal relationships that can either be made whole or utterly destroyed.

First, we lost my mother due to Alzheimer's in 2006. All my brothers and sisters and most of the nieces and nephews were there the night she passed. Then my wife's mother was lost to dementia in 2013. Unfortunately, she passed in the middle of the night in the hospice. I don't wish either of those experiences upon anyone. It is heart-rending and heartbreaking. Thank you @kbois for touching on a subject that few dare to write about.

Good speculation on how the implant might affect Marc. You might remember though, that the implant is espionage grade. I don't think any regular military could mess with it. We've seen a couple of its capabilities in this chapter. Some of us are waiting to see what else it can do.

Um, when YOU wrote about meals and other assorted food in the story? None Such makes two types of Mincemeat... You have to read the label. One is the modern stuff (without meat) and the other is traditional (with meat).

I agree that the stroke of midnight was the time for Devin to propose. It was the romantic thing to do, regardless of Devin's reasons. With that nice meal Mac prepared, I think Mac should've splurged a bit and bought a Marie Calendar pie instead of Mrs. Smith's. It costs a bit more but as far as frozen pies go, Marie's is much better.

Not nearly as crazy as those who are chosen to terraform an entire planet and repopulate it. @R. Eric, I'm really liking the way you're presenting the problems and difficulties of planetary colonization. Someone has to be in charge. That is a difficult position to be in. -
This is the first comment I've made on this terrific story, @Headstall. This is also the second time I've read the story. I cannot tell you how much it moved me the first time. Words don't come close. This time, I've been moved so much more. The emotions your characters express seem to be so real, it's like I'm watching a big-screen 3D movie. I've had plenty of Kleenex handy this time around! What I would like to read is how Keller gets two young boys for Tobyn and him to raise... Um, among other things!

Camille took the news about as well as I thought she would. It was Roman I was worried about. I'm guessing that Camie soothed things over with him via their implants. Marc gets a special implant from the CONFED spy services! Besides communications, I'm left wondering what else it does. It's apparent that there are other devices that were given to him. Hmm...

This was always a bitter-sweet story. It seems like it's one that I've loved for ages. Growing up and discovering things about yourself. Things that at that time in history is hard to swallow. Yet, at the same time, you find someone like yourself and fall in love with them. What will your family do if/when they find out? What will your friends say? This story confronts all those questions and more. I'm happy to hear that you will have an epilogue and that you will write a sequel, @Mark Ponyboy Peters. As we await that sequel, you have more stories of Thompsonville to share with us! 👍

I wonder how this works. I know that as soon as the old Baronet of Lake Placid died, the Fates would have selected someone, almost immediately. So, Marcos' eyes changed but how did he know what his Baronetcy was? Judging how the Baronets reacted, Evans had to have been an ultimate control freak.
