One of the founding fathers of the European Union, he proposed integration of the French and German steel and coal industries in 1950. Robert Shuman, French Foreign Minister made the declaration with the agreement of another great European, Konrad Adenauer, then West German Chancellor. Monnet later founded the Committee for the European United States, which was a driving force in uniting politicians and people in creating the European Economic Community.
