Didn't mean to be so direct, but I am a foodie. Also have spent time in close to all 32 states in México, have most Dianna Kennedy's cookbooks and have lived in Guatemala for nearly 15 years. If you haven't any of Diana's cookbooks, I would suggest at minimum "Cuisines of México"

I really enjoy your writing. Following Bending Iron convinced me to investigate some of your other work. I was not disappointed. The plot was solid, with just a bit of foreshadowing and enough allusion to sex to let the reader know it was happening. Kudos!

This chapter led me to search for some background on Tsar Paul I - strange fellow to say the least. The coup occuring only 5 days after the events in this chapter have piqued my curiosity as to what comes next.

Samoza regime? The Samoza family ran Nicaragua between 1936 and 1979. Though on the opposite side of the political spectrum, the current administration under Sandanista Daniel Ortega and his Vice-President wife doesn't seem much better. There were a few bright days under Violeta Chamorro between the Ortega regimes. On a brighter note, coffee. Guatemalan Antigua is commonly available in the US, though at $15+ per pound, it's rather pricy compared to here, GTQ50 ($6.70). Additionally, there are some other excellent regions - Cobán, Atitlán, Fraijanes and Huehuetenango.

To begin, I've lived as an expat in Guatemala for over 12 years and had visited many times before, including once during the "dark days", and those truly were "dark". Admittedly, there is still some polarization, but nothing compared to the violent insanity of Antifa and BLM prevalent in the US nowdays. Refreshingly, political correctness or "Wokism" is virtually non-existant here. Living in a city in the Western Highlands, 99% of our close friends (in many cases, considered family) are predominantly Mayan. We (my partner of 20+ years and I) have had nothing but a wonderful life! Just my 2 cents

I really don´t like to be political, but I am concered. Though I have sadly never visited, friends who have, agree SA is truly a beautifut country. With Ramapholsa and the parliament confiscating land right and left, are you in the least worried you might be next?

Having lived in Birmingham, Alabama for about 10 years and having travelled throughout the state, I can assure you most people don´t sound like hicks from remote hamlets of Appalachia. Most have genteel southern accents, though some are a bit twangy but with correct grammar. One thing for certain though, is the expression "Bless your heart!" is ubiquitous, which can mean anything from expressing pity regarding an unfortunate occurrence to a veiled but polite "F**k you".

I was aware the third person plural is what a lot of trans folks like to be called or referred to as. That´s fine, but it makes it difficult to follow the storyline. Perhaps italicizing when used in the modern context would help.

Thank god our Rottweilers are not bothered by pyrotechnics. Here in Guatemala, there are several hours of them on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Not only that, but when anyone has a birthday (which in our neighborhood is almost every day), long strings of firecrackers are set off between 5:30 am and 6:30 am.
