That's what psychopats do, they bully down and charm up. They are very dangerous to other people's mental health - and in this case probably also physical health.
At least no one will find it suspicious that Jevikel seems upset and moody in the next few weeks, while trying to conceal how he feels about Kadim. And we know they somehow make it through the winter, before leaving in early spring.
Good luck for the boys being sent up in the hills again. Kemi did the right thing in running during the quake and in the confusion it may take longer before anyone tries to find her.
At least Eric is finally able to express what's on his mind. Good for him. It's not something I've ever had trouble with (outspoken is putting it mildly ), but I can see how it's progress for him.
Well, maybe Kemi made it on her own first and inspired the guys to follow, but hopefully they went with her most of the way and thus learned the route to Benden for later use. Or else she was caught and her (sad) example made them plan better. But at least she went before there was any Thread about.
Interesting how Andy interpreted Eric's statement of 'What's the point' as meaning how he and Adam felt about Eric as their wedding guest. My initial thought was Eric meant 'What the point of going to social events if I'm not comfortable and it ends in me feeling alone and unhappy.'
But no matter how Eric meant it, the statement made Andy aware of how badly wounded Eric was and how it's still a struggle to stay in touch and open up, rather than retreating into his shell. Andy and later Rob will have to do most of the work to repair the damage, but at least Eric wants things to improve.
Bitrans are known for gambling and a love of entertainment, but also for being somewhat lazy and feeling entitled. But maybe they have some redeeming features like being less prudish and bigoted when it comes to sexual attraction. This would make Kadin more relaxed about being gay and more willing to admit it. But Jevikel will have to warn him about his father's attitude.
Kadin was lucky to get assigned to one of the only kind persons in the Hold. And Jevikel is lucky to meet someone who can broaden his knowledge of Pern. Of course, it may take a while before they realise.
They had the chance to go look for Eric when Andy asked Rob about him, before they went to the library, but they missed it. And apparently Eric didn't hear that part, but if he had gone into the library instead of lurking, all of them would have greeted him happily, and things woud have gone differently. Oh well, least said, soonest mended. Eric should just pretend he had gone home already, if the trio of inattentive guys bring it up.
Since the green dragons are the most numerous, the percentage of gay guys on Pern would have to increase dramatically, if girls could only impress golden dragons. I once read an interesting study which postulated that statistically gay men were much more likely to occur in families with fertile women. They speculated on the biological reasons for that, but I no longer recall the details. But it fits with this scenario, where women who were fertile would have high status and be encouraged to have many children, thus passing on those genes and making them more common over time.
Ben deserves a medal - or at least a permanent position at the law firm and a nice boyfriend of his own. Emily will be relieved she didn't brush Felicity off. I'm not surprised Adam is mortified by dismissing Andy's concerns about Oliver. Maybe he'll listen to his future husband next time.
I like the way they are slowly connecting and working towards getting to know each other. The kiss at the end surprised me as much as it did Eric, but I think he was OK with it.
They really shouldn't be doing this. Thry can simply wait another 25 years, as they are quite likely to still be alive. And in the meantime, they can work on making the Ista and High Reaches empty again.
Oh yeah, the 25 year leaps, I had forgotten about those being revealing to any observers in the other Weyrs. Zalna thinks it will only be 200 years till the next threadfall, but it will be 400 years, as it is a long interval, as far as I recall (see All the Weyrs of Pern). This is also why the Holders thought no more thread was coming, in Lessa and Flar's time.
I'm not sure Mollik lied to Haycock in order to implicate Brathay, or Haycock lied about Mollik's answer. It could simply be the way Mollik was questioned by his captain. Perhaps he feared being wrongly accused of something, like the other soldier.
(I don't have any specific insight as editor, in case you wonder.)
