Chapter 158 Blown & Tossed by the Wind
Timothy M. commented on Dodger's story chapter in Chapter 158 Blown & Tossed by the Wind
Let's hope only the pastor drowns, since unfortunately Don isn't there to get what he deserves. Horrible pricks both of them. -
I like how D'gar is introducing them to the work and duties of Weyrlings and explaining at the same time. He'll have to do it again when the rest of the candidates arrive. Five weeks to get them ready isn't much time. I think Wybral may be OK with samesex parings, and Illithal will soon get used to the idea. Peer pressure from (green) riders and the other candidates will soon fix his attitude. But if not, they can sic Bavi on him.
-
Matters are progressing nicely, but I bet the boys will feel rather intimidated with Ramoth hovering over them as they visit the eggs. But maybe Lessa and D'gar will take pity on them, and ask Ramoth to go feed on a heard beast instead.
-
D'gar is already showing some of his sterling leader and teacher qualities. I wonder if this idea of letting the candidates try different dragons beforehand is something he has come up with or it's a Five Weyr tradition. I like that we get to see both D'gar and the boys developing as we read the story.
-
It's most embarassing, but I cannot remember how I came up with that idea. Sorry
-
Sigh, I used to like Jack. When did he become such a stuffy old man? He should stand up to his wife more and tell her to stop the control act before her children leave or come to hate her.

I'm glad to see the boys being fine with spending time apart, but still checking in with each other and sharing their experiences - and some intimate moments as well. Jevikel was openminded about D'gar perhaps being nicer than the upset man they met after the rescue when Bavi, H'rek and J'rud talked about him. He didn't seem to pay much attention to the fact that D'gar had lost his first love and weyrmate, but I'm sure he'll remember later. He's good at thinking things over and connecting the dots. Kadin is bound to become popular with his ability to play and his outgoing personality.

Kemi's weyrmate is not a green rider. We actually haven't been told whether he is a blue or a brown (or even a bronze). When Kemi talks about Sh'ros dragon (Bruganith) not being involved, it's as a male dragon chasing a green. So he's more likely to be bi, than if he was a green rider. Or he could be mostly straight, but accepting of the occasional mating flight.

The Board doesn't know what is about to hit them. And I'm off to update the list again.

Zorleth must have liked them a lot, since she spoke to them. But maybe it's also part of testing how suited they are. I'm glad they're asking questions and forming their own opinions about what they see and hear, and not just relying on the other lads.
-
I liked the comment about most riders flying both ways. Makes sense, and it would be an advantage for the weyrs.
-
If Bavi takes them under her wing, they have a great champion for their life in the Weyr. If anyone is nasty to hem, they'll see their favorites shirt shrunk in the wash. I'm sure they have already impressed a few people by being hard-working and nice.
-
Peter Pjusk by Robert Fisker, a book about a small sparrow and his adventures after (accidentally) leaving the nest.
-
Andy has made a huge difference to Eric's life, but Eric has also impacted a number of people around him in various ways. I'm happy for him, and I shall imagine him progressing further with his thoughts, emotions and forays into life, rather than being stuck alone in his house.
-
I'm glad the hatching is still relatively far in the future, Ramoth hasn't even laid the eggs yet. The boys need time to get healthy and used to being in the Weyr. But I'd like them to be confirmed as potential candidates soon, which will give them status among their peers. Once they relax, I'm pretty sure they will find friends, because they are decent and kind.
-
I'm also impressed at the way you fill in all those details, and how the boys react to all the information. Knowing a good looking girl will probably be useful for them, but if Kemi has revealed where she came from, then their secret will be out. We know it will be fine, but I hope they are convinced too, so they can settle in.

I can understand why an honorable man like Granger would feel bad about his tenants being displaced. But since Caroline is a clever woman, I bet she has made sure they found new farms somewhere else, so she can soothe her displeased husband on this matter.
-
Seems like Natalie and Parker are the only nice people in that school.
-
I think Parker's Dad was naïve and self-centered once again, when he pulled the talk-to-the-protesters stunt. Especially since he didn't tell Parker to stay in the car. But at least he didn't appear on the news. I bet the reporter was white and his news editor too.

Will may be clever and caring, but I'll always consider him stupid when it comes to drugs. Why does he run those risks?
-
It was a national holiday in Denmark (Stor Bededag), so I didn't even think about it being Friday the 13th.
-
Tyler is kept in the closet by his surroundings just as much as Eric was in his time. But at least he has a few role models who are ready to help him. Proud of Eric for realizing Tyler has a difficult life, too.
-
I liked that the green rider who rescued them was quite casual about it, but I guess that will make the contrast with D'gar all the stronger. I can't recall whether Manora got to them first. It will be interesting to see the Weyr through the eyes of two boys who know very little about life amongst dragonriders.
-
Actually, it might be helpful if Gatri voices her suspicions now that the boy have escaped, because Vikkel cannot tell his people to get the boys back, if his son is gay. None of them would believe him and very few would help him, because he threw those other boys out after beating them.

Uh oh, I think Brad is about to have another Will lesson in manners. It will probably be painful and embarrassing, but good for Brad in the long run.
