The difference was less word count a d more the length of time each chapter covered. Early in the story a chapter covered a day or so in their lives, with little jumps to the end of a week. The last four covered larger chunks of time.

When I worked in the lab they paid my days salary, but I would have to give them the $10 check the courts paid at the time. Do your civic duty, but don't profit ! I thought the same of the defense but it was actually prosecution that dismissed me. We started with the "Does anyone have reason they should not serve" stuff, and I raised my hand, saying I did child care and was particularly protective of the children after we had a father break his daughters collar bone. Judge asked me if I felt I would side with the (14 yr old) accuser because of my experience. No sir, but I figured the defense would not want me. Can you tell when a boy is lying to get his own way? Ususally yes sir. Good, you will do, sit back down. Okaaaaay. Five minutes later the prosecution excused me with one of their preemptory challanges. The ones they don't need to give a reason for.

I've never made it past Vois dire ( did I spell that right?) Usually i go and sit all day to be dismissed with thanks. Twice made it as far as vois dire only to be dismissed as both were child abuse cases and at the time I worked in a before and after school care program.
