  1. Callum's treatment, while hardly pleasant, hasn't been brutal. Callum's worst punishment is his imagination.
  2. Does this mean you saved nine?
  3. Altercation is a word I can strongly identify with.
  4. There are still many unknowns here. What is this vast quantity of wood being used for? Fuel, building structures, furniture, and handles for tools seem obvious. Constructing ships seems unlikely due to Callum's father's dismissive comments earlier on the sea.
  5. This is speculation on my part, but we've seen these visions where these lumbermen come in and clear-cut all the trees leaving nothing behind. I shouldn't have to point out this is extraordinarily poor land and forest management. If they followed this same practice on the other side of the mountains, it explains why they are there. They ravaged their own forest either to near or total extinction. Would it be cynical of me to suppose the people in power are heavily vested in aspects of the wood trade?
  6. I still say smart. You have to be able to rationally evaluate the information at hand.
  7. My take on Callum is he is the closest version we're likely to find of a pacifist and conscientious objector in his society.
  8. She's managing it by the expressing it method. It's the pre-Freud method.
  9. The more we learn about Rym and the pactrids, the more there is to admire. They seem to be a more tolerant and civilized society than the humans. The government Callum is living under must be particularly vile to kill envoys. There are a number of things Callum should deduce from what he was shown. The humans are the aggressors here and liars. There is virtually no way for him to expect to both escape and get home on his own. Finally, the pactrids don't have to torture to find out what they need to know. Now, is he smart enough to come to these conclusions?

    Chapter 38 S2

Umm. I bought a case once...

    Chapter 38 S2

I don't believe you appreciate my appetite for mincemeat.

    Chapter 38 S2

It's in the fine print. When you talk about food in a story... Just be glad we didn't extoll the joys of munching on wild game and spitting up fur balls.

    Chapter 38 S2

If I only bought the mincemeat, it'd never make it to the pie. I'd eat it dried or in the jar.
  14. I looked back at this and see he is clueless about the mountains, which means they must be some distance away to not see them and then they are transporting the troops far beyond them.
  15. He can't see a mountain range??

    Perhaps your's aren't so bad.

    Chapter 38 S2

One thing I've been missing during the holidays is mincemeat pie. You simply can't find frozen ones anymore. I can get the small ones they market in the UK, but it just isn't the same. It's even hard to find mincemeat in stores to make your own. I guess it's the price. It's not cheap.

It's why they sell pie crusts.

    Chapter 38 S2

Other than religious concerns or folks with pet pigs, who would have a problem with ham?

    Chapter 38 S2

New Year's Eve overindulgence provided the action we've been missing. One thing I wonder about is what the boys do with the rings when they transition. Some of the past situations would make wearing rings problematic.
  21. He knows about the mountains. He just didn't know they had always been the border.

    Chapter 4

You're not a wimp. This was an admittedly tough read, though it does payoff in the end.
  23. We modern folks think a war lasting a hundred years is unimaginable. For us, our level of technology has made war something which can devastate both sides far too efficiently. It wasn't always so. Consider the ten longest wars. The longest lasted 781 years and surprisingly two ran well into the 20th Century. Some of these places are still hotspots today. https://largest.org/culture/wars/

    Chapter 4

Stop and consider a moment. If there were so little to this story as you now believe, would GA make it a Featured Story? The answer is of course not.
  25. Callum will be making a big mistake by trying to escape. He'll lose what little good will he's earned and his chances of getting away are close to nil. He doesn't know the terrain or how far behind the lines he might be. This pactrid is an experienced scout and would easily track and outpace him.
