  1. I remember watching Justin Wilson, the Cajun chef, on PBS. It was the first time I heard Cajun dialect, which is odd. We had a lot of property around Baton Rouge and went there frequently when I was a boy.
  2. I recall seeing one of those sliding screens, but hadn't thought what they were for. The widespread use of screens was one of the major factors which enabled the reduction of mosquito borne diseases.
  3. Bless your heart is a useful Southern parlance which can convey any range of meanings from genuine sympathy to outright contempt.

    Chapter 11

I am wondering if the dreams are a vision of the future. The participants look like Xavier's group and Kandric.
  5. You want to look so grim?
  6. Gilbert and Bennett Manufacturing of Redding, Connecticut is credited with making wire mesh window screens affordable. They sold their mesh in the Southern states as sieves until they lost the market in 1861 due to the Civil War and began making window screens.
  7. Another thing this chapter highlights, back then as now being a lawman wasn't a high paying profession. Reid's been saving his money, but he still didn't have enough for the small plot of land.
  8. Careful. You don’t want to be mistaken for one of those wild eyed guys with long, unkempt beards. You see them with 'The End is Near' signs.
  9. Gee. Google lied. Imagine that. LOL
  10. Lucas using burlap to make window screens made me wonder when wire screens began to be used. The first modern mention was in The American Farmer in 1823.
  11. Sounds like a task for Incognito.
  12. Anyone ever seen a two peckered rabbit?
  13. Nearing the end? Now this makes me sad.
  14. Is there any hope for a poor soul who forgot it was Bearpaw Monday? It should rank as a mortal sin.
  15. I figured Jubal would buy the land next to Lucas' place. It's a good move. We all had Billy pegged. Maybe Reid will take Jubal's advice.
  16. @chris191070has you beat by four.
  17. Good thing it freezes fast then. You been defrosting penguin poo?
  18. When I was in high-school, one teacher put the most advanced students together in a group. There were only three of us. One of the others was a boy who must have had a glandular disorder. He was overweight and sweated excessively even in the dead of winter. He would have wet patches under his armpits the size of dinner plates. He also must have either not used deodorant or it couldn't cope with the volume of stink. Unfortunately, he attached himself to me and out of part pity and part good manners, I tolerated his presence through the second year of college until he transferred to another school. Reek brought him to mind.
  19. In the 17th Century clerics wore cloaks called pluvials to shield them from rain.

    Chapter 17

Thank you! This brings both more meaning and questions to the story. Initially one might tend to dismiss Danny's sighting as drug fueled, but it's too precise and he is unlikely to be aware of Seminole lore.

    Chapter 17

I believe decaying flesh is the most unpleasant and memorable of odors. If you are around it for any period of time, it will permeate both clothing and the pores of the skin. I've been in too many places where it was the dominate perfume to the point Vick's salve was a must have item.
  22. When I saw jut was the Word of the Day, the Battle of Jutland came to mind. It was the last naval battle between great battleships. Who won is still hotly debated more than 100 years later. It has only been depicted in one film in 1926. It ranks fifth in great naval disasters with 8,000 killed.

    Chapter 17

Neither Rory or Danny have to be lying and are only telling the truth as they know it. Maybe Sam didn't want Danny to know he had changed his mind and was pretending to go through with the plan because it was easier. He gets in there and runs into another accomplice and had the fight.

    Chapter 17

The noxious odor of house fire smoke and coppery tang of blood might elicit a reaction from Micco, but this happened before he met Chase. It's not clear yet if it's the stories of Long Ears is what they are reacting to or they've seen it. They do know from Micco's ability to discount nothing.
