    He Floats

This is a beautiful breath of a poem, as patient as respiration, as urgent as a gasp. The word vernal is exactly right, and in that word blooms a whole host of images waiting for our attention and consideration. Wonderfully done.
  2. I am so very glad you stuck with it to the end, despite its dark beginning. That you enjoyed the story is a double treat for me. Many, many thanks.
  3. Whew! Talk about a dramatic recovery and a determined spirit! Arthur isn't going to give up, will he? And will the boys ever get their breakfasts? Seriously, though, if this doesn't influence the Vegas to make the move, what will? Looking forward to your next installment...

    Diversions

I'd hardly characterize this chapter as saccharine, but I do understand it to be much less bitter and harsh than previous chapters. Sunlit uplands may be almost too green and lovely, but Wally is clearly enjoying the company of Ellie, and even more, Graham. And now you are looking for something to go wrong? Many thanks for your keen and thoughtful remarks and comments. And thanks again for reading!

I love that you used the word 'pastoral.' It fits perfectly. You are absolutely right about change coming in quiet moments, in simple interactions. As you say, not much - yet very much - is happening. And Cookie? Everyone should have someone like Cookie. Thank you for continuing to read the story, and for your comments.

Wally is more at ease now than he has been since we met him. His motive for conversation is just to have good conversation, nothing else. Well, and maybe to figure out what the heck the comic is about. But Wally is clearly not the same man he was when he prowled as a predator. I am glad you like him in this chapter. But your final question is an apt one. Thanks so much for reading the story - for sticking with it, despite its difficult beginnings - and for your keen insights.
  7. Thanks for your input. You are absolutely right about trying to fit everything in. You and I agree on the need for context, too - it is something the students have often lacked, and simultaneously wondered why I bother...it's supposed to be a music course, isn't it Mr. Owens?

    For Mum

Your memories - twinkling - skinned knees - perfect images to recall the person you still love. Such memories are conveyed so beautifully in this, as is the hurt you bear in missing her. One cannot read this without thinking of goodness and warmth; sadness and yearning. I offer hugs to you for both.
  9. How very unsettling! Wonderful images...

    Cold Beauty

    Very lovely, evocative.
  11. Your title is perfect and your command of the meter is wonderfully controlled. How hard we are on ourselves sometimes. Perhaps it is that we play all the parts, king and pawn and all the rest, for such is the daily change in life's menu. But you, my friend are a true knight, for your courage and grace show through in this.

Sweet stuff? Yes, well, perhaps the calorie count is climbing. But maybe Wally is changing, and that's a good thing to see. This story can't send you to the dentist entirely, can it? Thanks for continuing to read and for your comments!

I like the term you use to describe the work Wally is doing for Cookie...non-profit. Certainly, he is doing this for nothing else except that the older man asked him to try. And I can't help but appreciate the way you talk about the changes Wally the onetime predator has undergone. He can make friends, and be conversations dn. funny and charming for no other reason than it seems right. He has no further agenda than that. In the process, it appears he is making friends and building something more enduring than his 'business' ever was. Thanks so much for continuing to read along in this voyage, and for your very encouraging remarks.

    Diversions

Poor Wally is probably just trying to make out the storyline from the pictures; the text in Japanese is quite likely to be more distracting than helpful. But Graham seems to have shed some light on the story; at least, he seems me to have a vague clue of the language. A database could be a better tool for Wally in his work with Cookie, but the spreadsheet is what he knows how to use. When Wally gets back to land, perhaps he will get some training...thanks for your comments and thoughts. I appreciate them so much.

    Diversions

You read this so well...Wally is perhaps less aware of the change in himself than we are...that he could engage in conversation and banter without some other agenda or fear is probably a very refreshing experience. If Cookie was able to sneak up on Wally, what else might creep in? I am glad you are enjoying the voyage, though. Thanks for your perceptive thoughts.

    Chapter 23

This is a fantastic chapter. Then again, it's a fantastic story. Jackson's change into someone actually thoughtful and caring about another has been so artfully done that it becomes hard to recall what he was like before. The whole homecoming game and dance dilemma had me smirking, as did the interrupted make-out session. And poor Cindy. When is she going to realize that hovering is not going to change Luke into the porcelain figurine she seems to want for a son? As it is, Jackson's mom is far more perceptive, and kind. And maybe, just, maybe, the new Jackson will be worthy of that.
  17. This chapter speaks volumes about how some families and some siblings get nearly everything right. As Cesar and Brett muse, they aren't quite sure how it happens, but it does. CJ and Owen had me enjoying the party, and you floored me and Ethan with the whole green eyed jealousy thing. But the best part was the morning after with Ritchie standing up for his brothers. This is a standout chapter!

Yeah, you can tell what might be happening. Their time just zipped past. Interesting, yes...thanks for reading and for your comments!

I think Wally probably finds the Japanese text distracting. The general outline might be visible in the story, but the text might mean something important. He might find a translation on the internet, but that's not something he will find right at the moment. But you are right in that Graham and Wally have had a lovely, unconstrained conversation, and that's the best thing he's experienced in a while. Many thanks for your very perceptive thoughts and for reading the story!

    Chapter 6

This chapter really shows Nathan in a very good light. He seems to be a wonderful man. As Corey said, he'll be even more wonderful if he's willing to wait for Liam. Which, knowing Liam, would be a very good choice for Nathan to make. It was very, very wise for Liam to clear the air with Nathan, seeing as Nathan reacted as I might have expected and hoped. A lovely chapter. More please? Now?
  21. Several nights later, he was deep into the project of sorting out Cookie's cryptic ship's accounting. He'd created a spreadsheet which had begun to sprawl wildly, despite his best attempts to tame it. He'd put together coffee and early morning munchies for researchers staying up, and then went back to the puzzle. He thought he had part of the problem licked by using several clever sorting commands, but a whole lot of the entries defied classification. He'd actually had to go and look up things i
  22. I cannot help being delighted with the discussion on CPE Bach. I quite agree that he lives far too much in JS's shadows. This discussion is generally making me (1) despair over and (2) rethink the music history course I get to (occasionally) teach. If there are any suggestions for a revamp, I'd be all ears.
  23. I love this poem. It is utterly entrancing. Your depiction of the wind, whispering, reminding, recalling...how wonderful.
  24. Yes, and I wept, too. Your words to Michael, and then his to you opened the floodgates. These are terrifying, courageous and beautiful words. Beautiful.

    Backstage Tryst

What a story. You write the sex so vividly and smoothly; such things are often hard to write. And it attracts for all the things that went untold, too - now I want to know how they connected, where our narrator had to go through...all that, and what happened after, of course. Perfectly marvelous.
