    Chapter 35

It’s bad enough to piss off half your pack. Worse still is to have Jimmy mad at you. Make enemies of Sawyer and Jada too, and that’s like begging to be dethroned in a welter of pain. With Patton gone, who’s gonna have Fergus’ back? Who in the pack will believe his vague stories and buy his bluster? And heaven help Fergus if Maddie ever learns he hurt both Sawyer and Jada.
  3. Thank you for bringing an episode of history unknown to me to life. I knew nothing of Mary Whitehouse, or of this trial - not on this side of the Atlantic. Yet there are self-appointed guardians of public morality everywhere, people who aggressively press their own personal bigotry and bias onto everyone else.

    Escape?

The description of Lee getting lost in making omelets was priceless. Watching someone become more truly themselves again is magnificent; you’ve done this with Lee, and it makes me smile.

    Quodlibet

Yes, dancing is an excellent metaphor. I’m hoping it wasn’t too didactic a chapter, but it was fun trying to describe so many different kinds of music. I’m very glad to see what you thought! Thank you.
  6. Whew! I feel like Ritch is gonna lead us on a breathless kind of chase. There's so much to follow. Thanks for including us in so many of the details of cadet life. It's vivid, and puts us in the picture at every moment.
  7. Gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this.

    Nocturne

That’s a very apt description: longest foreplay. I love it. Rick will have a very hard time sleeping after that kiss. Gus has him captured completely. Now we’ll have to see if the feeling is mutual. I’m very glad you’ve enjoyed this story, as frustrating as it might be. Thank you for your thoughts and comments.

You’re very kind. Yes, that kiss took a long time to develop, but it’s going to stick with Rick for a long time! Thanks for waiting to see it happen.
  10. Thank you for sharing parts of yourself.

    That works too.:)

Rick will be floating on air after that kiss for quite a while. Though they were interrupted, I suspect that will merely whet each man’s appetite for more. Of course, Rita, Heinrich and professional obligations may intervene to keep Gus and Rick apart. Right now, Rick is so happy, he could even sing. Or at least hum... thanks for reading!

    Nocturne

Gus made the first move, but Rick followed his lead quickly enough. They circled each other quite a while. I’m happy to provide Rita/Heinrich warnings, though I may not be any better judge of their effects than the meteorologists are about snowfall. Thanks very much for reading!

Your celebratory comment made me smile! I hope it was worth the wait...

Or even the Fourth movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAyUzxDB9eE. Anyway, whatever music you choose, I'm very happy you thought it worthy of some glorious accompaniment. Thank you!

    That's great. I love it.

Thank you for your comment! You may not be surprised that I did much the same after putting in the last exclamation point when I drafted the chapter.

I'm most grateful for your gentle correction to my spelling error, which was a glaring as a french horn coming in two measures too soon. I am glad you enjoyed the chapter, even so. Many thanks for reading and for your kindness.

    Nocturne

You are most kind in your comments. It seemed like the perfect ending to a most perfect day. Rick will surely treasure it for a long time to come. My thanks to you for reading and for your thoughts.

My goodness, you sound almost like Marta. But you can hardly be blamed for that. Joey seems to be as much a force of nature as the stars. Never fear, that may be the first kiss Rick and Gus share, but it probably won't be the last - not if Rick has anything to say about it. Thank you so much for your response and for reading.

I loved this. I can only say that the next chapter is in the pipeline. Thank you for reading!

The stars out in the countryside shine more brilliantly than in town. And they shine equally on everyone. The brilliance of the day similarly shines on Gus and Rick, and they seem to give light to one another equally, too. I am glad these descriptions and snapshots touch strings within you to let you hear inner harmonies. Because Rick and Gus seem to be approaching one another as equals, they can learn more about one another, and delight in each other. I am very happy that you thought their kiss was perfect. I know that Rick will be remembering it for a very long time. Thank you for your observations and insights, and for reading Rick's story.

It's amazing what spending time with someone you like and respect can do for one's self-confidence. That kiss will remain with Rick for a very long time, perhaps long enough to help him through the next encounter with Heinrich Senior and Rita. Thank you very much for reading, and for your thoughts.

You may count on Rick finding his way back to Gus. After that kiss, he's going to be distracted for a long time. I'm sorry that the food descriptions have gotten your taste buds twitching, but at least this chapter's offerings were better than the dodgy bologna sandwiches from earlier. Alas, your observation about Heinrich and Rita-free chapters is all too likely. But at least Rick will have thoughts of Gus to make him smile. Thanks again for commenting and for reading!

    Nocturne

I am so very glad you felt some of the magic too. Gus astonished Rick, but how lovely it was to know he felt the same way. Rick may have trouble driving home safely, as he will be dwelling on kissing Gus for a long while, I think. Thank you for reading, and for your response.
