Good job Will was using his Amex card in USA. In Spain it wouldn’t be accepted, nor Diners card if it still exists, in 90% of places. I imagine for the % cut they want. Here it’s Mastercard all the way! I love the way @PrivateTim is on hand to check all SoCal details…. And I’m off on holiday v near to El Ferrol next week to check on the Granger story details 😂 😂 😂 ps and before I’m accused of being a Granger stalker, I booked the place before I saw the name in a recent chapter…. PPS Thank you Mark for all the joy you bring with your stories. gary

Sorry to hear some of you are a tad chilly in western hemisphere- here in Valencia, thanks to the amazing almost divine intervention of the greatest supreme leader of the galaxy, with no climate change, it is a cool February day. Oh, sorry, it’s actually 30°c, mid 80s F, on our balcony. 😱 -

Good luck Chris, as an ex headmaster I know how tricky these changes can be,, Fingers crossed for you. 🤞 -
Sadly, I was counted as self-employed as partner in a teaching cooperative …. 😱

Here in Spain, the most highly rated gov agency is the tax office. Yes! Amazingly efficient, helpful and v easy to do tax return. Gov has access to all, and I mean all, legal income. Until I retired I did return online in 5 mins and usually got a few hundred euros back…… However, last year I needed an accountant - it cost all of 45€. The result was a huge tax bill as I jumped with retirement benefits from 12% to 35% tax band. I’m still reeling…..

This struck me as weird as I live in a v hot south- facing apartment and then I realized the change in hemisphere explained it: The front of the large two story house faced south so even at 12.30 on this hot summer afternoon it was shaded where Martin was waiting when the taxi pulled up.

@Summerabbacat, your comments are the BEST on GA. There should be a special badge for sparkling putdowns! Xxx BTW, I love the story.

Here in Valencia it’s a glorious Spring day. Couldn’t appreciate to the full after v late night at a farewell dinner for a colleague at my old school. Unlike an earlier commentator I hadn’t over imbibed but wieners were v annoyed as I got home at 01.00. They like to be under the duvet by 10.30! I’m shattered and want an early night but we have a birthday supper to attend. This social life is killing me! -
I also hate beer, rugby league and meat pies… we also agree on what makes a great storyteller like @Robert Hugill!

February 2026 Signature Feature Excerpt: The Yacht Club by Mark Arbour

I was so annoyed with myself for not guessing @Mark Arbour was the author, especially knowing he likes the occasional holiday on a cruise ship… -

Using my full-power Anglo Irish charm I got an appointment for next Monday. It wouldn’t have worked on Nurse Rachett but the (female) dr fell for it! Of course, I then had to confess at home….🤭 -

I had to confess as the allergy test was a flop. Now awaiting a sermon from the previously lovely Dr. no idea when test will be repeated. Arghhh -

Off to allergy clinic - a wait of 18 months. Didn’t read the instructions and shouldn’t have been taking antihistamines for 5 days, not the 2 I have done. Do I lie? -
Exactly. It will take a good few Granger chps for me to fully forgive our dear, ageist author!

sorry, Tim, but Humpty D is right. Human language changes all the time and words mean today what people now want them to mean. The key is honest agreement about what, in this case, ‘commitment’ means. As I said, I’m with you on commitment meaning monogamy but then what exactly is that? Having dinner with straight and gay friends around the Clinton and Monica L case I was the only person who said that he was committing adultery ( apart from the inappropriate relationship with a junior). A married couple was fervent in saying that having oral sex was not adultery. As they used to say in Manchester when I was a boy, “there’s nowt so queer as folk…”

I am nervous to disagree with the renowned commentator @PrivateTim but perhaps his universe isn’t one that everyone wants to live in. Ironically, I think that I do live in his universe (27 yrs with my husband) but I accept that others don’t, and it ain’t for me to judge so long as someone isn’t being dishonest within the terms of the relationship. So, I may not “approve” of Will’s version of commitment but I respect his honesty. There, my rant over! 🤣

Like father, like son. whatever their faults, both Brad and Will are capable of committing to someone. This chp reminds me of Wade and Matt walking in a forest as their relationship was disintegrating. cant say I’m over impressed with Travis. He is becoming more and more like Z**h….

I so agree. But just a thought: years ago I did a minor in child psychology with an amazing young Jesuit psychology prof. He was asked about what would make the perfect parent. His reply has stuck with me since the 80’s: parents who are ‘perfect’ are a disaster for children. They need ‘good enough’ parents, to know they are loved but also to learn adults can have a bad day, make mistakes etc., that parents can say sorry etc. warm regards, @kbois, and a big virtual hug, gary -
As an addict of @Mark Arbour’s Bridgemont series, I’m looking forward to visiting sites on the coast near where Granger sailed…. sadly, places to rent with amazing views are amazingly expensive, but looking forward to going to Finisterre - the end of the world as it was thought….

Good to see dogs allowed in the gardens. So often it’s a no no. We head to NE Spain to edge of Bay of Biscay and Atlantic. Being a good daddy, I’ve found a cottage with 1,200 square meters of orchards for Greta and Lilibeth to play ín. They are high-maintenance dachshunds, to say the least. 🤗
