    Leaving Home

Wonder how many people with defective hearing have passed those tests the same way?

    The Secret

Well written opening chapter, giving a lot of background information and a sense of Seb's character.
  3. We read it in my book group a few years ago. Very poignant and exceedingly well researched.
  4. This one is also on my list to read. Here are some others you might like to review: Alan Hollinghurst: The Folding Star and/or The Line of Beauty Patrick Gale: Take Nothing With You Matt Cain: The Secret Life of Albert Entwhistle

    Chapter 2

Looks as if the nasty Reverend is going to get taken out himself by the bikers. But I'm a little bit worried that Timothy might be in further danger if the Rev decides he's part of the mess that needs 'cleaning up.'
  6. And trying to make sure none of the seconded riders are hurt in the fallout. Very perceptive comments.
  7. Your comment led me to check this out on Amazon. I'm on book two already!

    Chapter 16

I had a bad feeling about the way this chapter might end. Even though pleasant things were happening, there was a hint of background tension. I also can't see how Marc Greene could have found out so much so quickly and feel it's more likely to be an accomplice; maybe someone he influenced while in prison and who has been recently released. Or, as @pvtguy mentioned, maybe the lawyer was involved. They were around the same height. Maybe they swapped clothes in the prison (or during the transfer), enabling Greene to escape? Oh well, will find out soon enough.
  10. The resentment is fairly high now that the Telgar riders see the seconded riders 'getting away with it'. As Weyrleader, R’mart needs to consider how best to deal with it. D'gar is definitely handling the situations well.
  11. ‘We’re getting some really dirty looks,’ J’rud said, after he returned to the table with a loaded plate. D’gar was already eating. ‘So?’ The rest of the seconded riders on Greenfields Wing table had all returned with their dinner, while the Telgar riders sat waiting, still last on the roster. ‘It’s not fair, is it?’ ‘I agree. But we can’t help that.’ The food wasn’t quite as good as what was usually available at Fort, but at least they weren’t eating leftovers any more. Herebeth,
  12. This is a great idea. I often browse through books but am reluctant to take the plunge and buy without some idea of what the quality of the writing will be like. These reviews are very useful.

    Chapter 26

Jase and Nathan are still dancing around each other. Something has caused Nathan's problems with his dad.

    Chapter 1

Painful chapter to read. Now I see where the farm comes in to the story. Those parents are hateful and the kind of religion that encourages such attitudes equally so.

    Prologue

Nice set up for the story, giving a good overview of the history and background before zooming in on the characters.

    Three

Okay, so I'm guessing the bullying escalated even more until Liam struck back (as anyone would) and the worst happened. And Rhys Clarke is obviously the sort who is good at playing adults so they presume he wouldn't do anything wrong, as we've already seen in the classroom. No one is going to believe quiet, outsider Liam's story.

    Two

This is making me think of the two lads involved in the Jamie Bulger murder. I hope I'm wrong.

    The Date

A great short story which is complete in itself, but which could also continue if that's where you want to take it.

    Back to Work

Craig is still feeling uncertain, although the phone call from James boosted his confidence slightly.

    A Minor Mutiny

That sums her up fairly well. In canon, she's portrayed as a bit ditsy (after all, she keeps R'mart overdosed with numbweed more or less the whole way through quite a lot of important events in 'Dragonquest') but I reckon that's just an act that's served her well over the Turns.

    Back to Work

Craig got home as darkness began to fall, parked his car on the snowy drive, then let himself into the house. It was warm; he always kept the thermostat on low for Jerry’s comfort. Jerry was curled up on his favourite armchair and immediately jumped down to greet him. You are never alone with a cat. ‘How’s it been for you?’ he asked, receiving a plaintive meow for an answer. He always talked out loud to the cat. It made the house feel slightly less empty. ‘Want some food?’ Jerry knew t

    Travelling On

This story is a continuation of Fellow Travellers, which ideally should be read first. After getting home following being stuck in the snow, Craig reflects on his meeting with James. Even now, the whole experience feels like a dream and he wonders if James will contact him again. Or even if that would be a good thing? His life wasn't meant for Hollywood endings, after all.
  23. Oh no! Looks like Aleks might be in serious bother. And just when it all seems to be going so well with Maks.

    Chapter 14

I’d never heard of a Yankee Swap before, but it sounds like much more fun than the usual Secret Santa, where you have to keep the crap you get and pretend you like it!

    A Minor Mutiny

Sometimes it takes outsiders to see the obvious. Telgar Weyr needs to change it's ways. This is one of the occasions when the Pernese policy of total autonomy doesn't do anyone any favours.
