I had wondered before why you went with the title of this story.. Well let us just say this chapter explains everything.. Lying to Joel is some form of Self-preservation.Am starting to worry however that it will come back to bite him in ways he cannot imagine..I get a feeling it will eventually wear down Celia..I feel like Joel is his worst enemy honestly. Sure he is wary of opening up but then how do you expect folks to know you when you are not making an effort to at least meet them half way...I noticed when was re-reading the first chapters two days ago that he has been doing this for a while...I gather that it's the emotional detachment that contributes to the 'break down' that we witness in Chapter 1.... What is ironic is that in Joel's world he has it a bit fine..At least he would not have to worry about being beaten up like it is here in my country. You would be beaten seriously and then promptly arrested.
