LOL... gangsta riter?

A few weeks ago I posted a story called the Barlow Boy. It turned out to be a little controversial because of a specific element of the story. Here is a sampling of the response that I got: A storyteller has a choice. He can give you what you want to hear. He can write propaganda or be a cheerleader for the way things ought to be. In short, he can jerk you off in all sorts of ways and you will forget it. Or a storyteller can tell you something, perhaps something ugly, about yourself, humanity or the world. This kind of storyteller will take a little slice of hell and smack you in the mouth with it. Fair warning. I'm the type that is going to challenge you. I'm the type that is going to cause you tears of anguish and outrage. I'm the type that will take you to the edge and let you look over it into the abyss. Wear a helmet. It's going to be one hell of a ride.

Riley You've got nothing to apologize for. Drama is about disturbing things. Excellent drama will knock you on your ass. It will shock you and leave you shaken. The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is disturbing as hell, not a fun read but is one of the most important works of the twentieth century. It helped change the world. Thank goodness that Solzhenitsyn didn't pull it because it was disturbing.

They would probably have better luck suing Michael Jackson's estate. He was known to steal a song and settle lawsuits.

I like the all male class model because it produces demonstrable results. In various pilots here in the states, boys do from 10-25% better and girls do better but not by the same margin. Kids may be better socialized in co-ed situations but with half of them turning up pregnant, perhaps they are being too well socialized.

It has been proven that kids do better academically in single gender settings but political correctness trumps all. It simply doesn't matter if it is better for the kids if it is not politically correct.

Disaster is word that has suffered from overuse. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami are all disasters. This oil spill is so large that it threatens a unique way of life. It threatens people who have just gotten up off the matt after the most destructive and deadly hurricane in living memory and now have to face the death of an entire ecosystem. If the response to Katrina was a blunder by the Bush Administration, this is Obama's Chernobyl. Washington has done nothing of substance and has stood by and watched as this disaster has mushroomed out of control. If we can not contain this disaster soon, it will be so destructive that the costs will bankrupt not just BP and her underwriters but the complex web of economic interdependencies that tie countries and their economies together. The oil is already making landfall- and you can count the cost at 5 1/2 billion $ per day until the well is capped.
