In the land between the rivers, near the banks of the river Tigris, lies a sleepy village where something dark is stirring. Epheriel, the angel assigned to watch over this village, senses hatred and ill will toward the village hero Jair, though it knows not from whom. This is a tale of the Forgotten Realms, taken from the Baldur's Gate series. An orphan raised by a sage in the library fortress of Candlekeep is forced to flee for his life from forces who want him dead. He must discover who is hunting him and why, while keeping his friends safe. A tall order for a half-elf who has never left the library before.

Chris is a nineteen-year-old community college student and part-time bartender who lives at home with his parents. Callan is a 23-year-old post-graduate student living on his own, 1,200 miles from where he grew up, who discovers while working on his Ph.D. that he has become an inspiration for the younger Chris. Both are aspiring musicians.

The story begins as Callan seats himself at the bar at the Saguaro Grill where Chris works, and before the evening ends Chris has offered to help him land a gig as the Grill’s musical entertainment a couple of nights a week, an arrangement that works out well for both of them.

Max Wilson is a peculiar 14-year-old boy with a love for basketball and classical music. The teenager is popular, but he has bad grades, and family life at home is not going well. Plus Max is gay. Recently he has chosen a pen-pal for English class as his grades are bad. So, he sends off a letter to the anonymous person whom he has been assigned. Over two months, the teenagers grow a bond through a lost art of communication; helping Max to come to terms with who he is, and to Max's amazement, he's fallen for an unknown boy who sounds perfect in every way according to their personal correspondences.
