Ice Fairy 4 - 10. Chapter 10
Chapter Ten
Sam’s POV
“There she is.” Sam smiled as he saw Amber walk in the door, with Colby at her side, as usual. He opened his arms wide and gave her a hug as she squealed.
“Sammie! So good to see you, sweetie.” She held him tight and moved on from him to Brett, who hugged her too; but it didn’t look nearly as enthusiastic as theirs had been.
“Merry Christmas, Amber. Colby.” Brett spoke in his low tone. Colby always took just a handshake from them. It used to bother Sam a little that he wouldn’t hug him back; fearing homophobia. But that wasn’t it at all. Amber told them he just wasn’t comfortable hugging other guys like that; especially as often as they seemed to.
“Guys.” Colby grinned and let his southern accent shine through. “Mmm. I smell some good vittles.”
Sam laughed. “We have a ton of great food here, Colby. Help yourself. Everyone’s here. Ryan and Caleb just got here a bit ago.”
Amber seemed to perk up. “Oh? I thought I saw Ryan’s car. Did they ride in together?”
Wow! What’d that take, two minutes for to find something to gossip about and sniff out something potentially scandalous?
After letting out an internal groan, Sam shook his head. “Not that you need to know; but no, they didn’t. You know that they broke up.”
“Yes, I do. So sad. Maybe if you guys would’ve kept things zipped up this wouldn’t have happened.” Amber managed to spit at them and keep her voice low at the same time.
Brett’s mouth dropped open. He looked around, supposedly for Colby, but he’d bailed already.
“Look here, Amber…” he started.
“Brett, please.” Sam pleaded with his eyes. “Not right here.” He wouldn’t do this in the foyer, which echoed horribly. There were younger and older ears, parental ears at that, present.
“Hmpf. I told you it was trouble. So what now? Are they still broken up?”
Loud footsteps were heard heading in their direction and Caleb appeared, munching on a large cookie.
“You know the acoustics of this house are perfect for eavesdropping? Especially in the foyer.” He glared at Amber. “If you have something to say to me, Amber or a question, just ask it like a normal human being.”
Sam couldn’t help but grin. He loved Caleb so much and he knew the man very well. To see him join in on the party to get Amber’s tongue in check was absolutely glorious.
Amber harrumphed. “Fine. Let’s move away from the acoustical nightmare then and go downstairs.” She prissily marched over to the stairwell and beckoned to Sam. “Come on, sweetie. We can all talk down here.”
Hesitating a little, Sam finally caved. “Fine. Whatever. Let’s all go, guys. We need to get it all settled. Might as well do it all at once.”
“Right.” Brett agreed.
“Let’s go.” Caleb followed behind them, with Ryan in tow.
As soon as they were all downstairs, Sam stood with his back to Brett, and his arms crossed. He was pissed at his best friend. Ever since this whole thing began; he knew he should’ve kept his mouth shut. Tight. As in never ever tell her about what the four of them were doing. What the fuck business was it of hers?
But since he couldn’t help but talk about it; now they were in this situation and it felt like a showdown.
“Go ahead, Amber. You’re the talkative one.” Caleb teased.
The girl looked perturbed and haughty in her stance. Her nose was definitely out of joint.
“Hmpf. Fine. I can see you and Ryan are obviously back together. You’re standing there together holding hands.” She looked very defense, with her hands on her hips and a smug look on her face.
“Holy crap, yes we are.” Ryan shot back and Sam couldn’t help but laugh.
“Very funny.” Amber rolled her eyes. “So what gives then? Are things over with the four of you now? It caused a disaster, didn’t it?”
Sam grew angrier with each word and accusation. He especially hated the ‘I told you so’ that she was screaming in his face without saying a word. But if that particular phrase should slip out…
“What business is it of yours again?” Brett cut in. “Really? It was between the four of us. No one else. Not you, not Colby, not our parents. US FOUR GUYS ONLY!
Amber looked sick. “Yes, four guys all in bed together and naked and doing whatever disgusting things you could think of. You should be in bed with your own man; not sharing your popsicles with each other.”
Okay, what? Sam shook his head, not believing what he was hearing. “Sharing our what?” he did not just hear that. He shook, he felt it. At first he thought it was the house, but it was him. He was shaking with anger! His limits had finally been reached and he snapped like a tree limb during a storm.
“Sharing our popsicles?” Sam repeated. “What the fuck did you just say?”
“Whoa…easy, baby.” Brett advised, reaching for his fiancé’s shoulders.
But Sam shook him off. “No. Not this time. I’m sick of being thought of as sick, and weird, and that we’re all just whores. I bet that’s what you’re thinking, isn’t it? He crossed to Amber and in a move that surprised even himself, he grabbed her arms and shook her!”
“What? Sammie stop it! Stop it!” she pushed him away, but he came right back and got nose to nose with her.
“Brett’s right! What the hell business is it of yours who we share our love with? We made that call all by ourselves, Amber! We’re all adults and we made that decision.”
“Fine!” she screamed back. “Then you should’ve shut up about it and not come crying to me when things imploded!”
Dammit, she had a point. A very valid one. Sam should’ve kept it quiet.
“You’re right, Amber. Okay. You’re right. I shouldn’t have told you what we were doing. None of it. It was our business, our bodies, our hearts.” He felt lightheaded as he glanced at Caleb and knew the truth; that the big guy had fallen in love with him in the process of their shared escapades.
But it hurt Brett and worst of all, Ryan. That was the last straw.
“Not that it matters,” Ryan interjected. “But it’s done with now.”
Amber snorted. “Who cares now? The damage is done. You all getting together like you did…” she looked positively nauseated.
Sam felt like his heart would thump out of his chest and a truth hit him. “Amber… what’s so sick about it? Are you…?” he could barely ask the question, but forced it from his throat. “You see Brett and I kiss; do you think it’s gross? Men being together with other men? So what’ve you thought of me all this time, Amber?” he grabbed her arms again and looked into her dark eyes.
“What? Sammie…”
“No! No answer me. Is that why you have such an issue with this? You think gay sex is gross?”
Just her hesitance and her eyes darting around gave him the answer he didn’t want to hear, but one he apparently needed to.
“Yes. Okay? Yes! I think it’s a little gross when four naked guys are all sucking and writhing and sweating…” she shook her head. “But I don’t think of you and Brett that way…”
“How can you not, Amber?” Brett asked quickly. “It wasn’t an orgy, first of all. That’s what you’re describing. What we had was couples. Okay, so we traded partners; but no orgy.”
Sam felt his face, it was wet. He was screaming at his best friend, one for meddling again and for sticking her nose into his world; but he was genuinely and deeply hurt at her feelings of his very private life. Sex with his man, and his best friend.
“Really?” Amber asked snidely. “Well, you said it’s over, right? Good. You belong with only Sam, Brett. Not with Ryan or Caleb or whoever else you invited over to your little gatherings.” She used the air quotes.
That’s it, Sam was gonna really lose it now.
“Shut up, Amber.” He told her in a clear, cutting tone.
“Excuse me?”
“I think he told you to shut up.” Caleb reinforced. Sam was so happy that he did that. This was easier with his friends there for sure. His real ones. Damn he felt like such a fool right now; trusting and loving Amber as much as he had and for so long. His heart was aching right now; his confidant was turning into his enemy.
“Damn right I did.” Sam glared at the girl. “Amber, I never knew you felt this way at all. So you just hung out with me why? Because I’m safe? That I wouldn’t hit on you?”
Amber shook her head. “No…that’s not it, Sammie…” she panicked. “I love you.”
“Hah!” Sam was livid. “You love me? Some love! You told me to break up with Brett a couple of times when he’s the best thing on earth. You think what I do with my body is disgusting, and sharing my love, of my own free will with my friends is the most horrid thing on earth.” He felt faint due to the emotional rush.
“That’s not true!” she fought back, but it was a weak argument.
“Have I ever once told you to dump Colby? Ever? No! I listen to everything you do; all of it! That’s what we had, Amber. You were my best bud, my confidant, my dearest friend. But I have to stop telling you everything; and I should’ve a long time ago.” He felt tears drip from his cheeks and Brett moved in to wipe them away.
“Sammie…” Amber whimpered, but it fell on deaf ears.
“I think you two should reach a new agreement if you’re gonna stay pals at all.” Brett suggested.
Dear Brett. His words were true and Sam wondered if he and Amber should be friends at all anymore.
The girl cried into her hands and sat down on the sectional. “After all I’ve done for you? Held you? Listened to you? Wiped your tears? You were bullied all the time, Sam. I was the only one who was there for you.”
Yes, she had been. But he didn’t need her help in school anymore. He was out and with Brett, and happier than ever. Plus Caleb and Ryan were there for him too. He loved her still; but did he need her?
Sam knelt before Amber and took her hands. “Amber, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I do. I still love you very much. I just didn’t know you felt this way and some of your advice has been very hurtful.”
Amber rubbed her thumb over his knuckles. “Do you still want to be friends?” she whispered.
“Only if you can accept who and what I am and what I do. Gay sex is the most magical, endearing, wonderful…” he glanced at Brett. “Please don’t think of it as ugly. I know for some, fucking is all they like. Fast and hot, but there’s no love. When it’s with the right person, sex is so amazing and it’s not all the fast-paced sucking and orgies that you probably thought of. Sex is sweet, and kind, and you share your bodies and your love. Your heart is meshed together with your lover and it’s the most glorious feeling.”
“I…I’ll try. You said it wasn’t like that?” she looked up at the others.
“No. Not at all. Everything was perfect and sweet. We had real love, Amber. We just decided to share it with each other.” Sam locked eyes with Caleb for a moment.
“But it didn’t last.” She reminded them.
Caleb stepped closer. “Only because jealousy came into play. I know Sam won’t tell you; but it’s mainly my fault. My emotions got out of control and my heart got too wrapped up.”
“It wasn’t just you.” Ryan added.
“Hell, no! It was all of us.” Brett chimed in.
Sam felt better that it was the four of them that were all at fault. But he had to decide if he and Amber would be pals anymore.
“Can you accept me and what I do? With Brett?”
It was a simple question.
“I think so.” Amber responded after a long pause. “If it’s love. True love. The act itself…I really don’t wanna know about.”
Sam laughed. “That’s okay. I don’t really wanna know the details about you and Colby either.”
Amber looked surprised, but then smiled. “Oh, Sammie.” She hugged him tight. “I do love you. Just please be careful. You only get one life.”
“I’m fine, I am. I’m in very good hands.” He took Brett’s hand.
“Damn right.”
“No more sharing sex stories. I promise.” Sam held up his hand as if he were being sworn in.
“Same here, and I’m sorry I told you to dump Brett. He’s terrific.”
Sam grinned. “Damn right he is. You owe two more apologies.” He indicated the other couple.
Amber swallowed audibly and turned to Caleb and Ryan. “Guys, I’m so sorry. I need a filter over my mouth or something. Colby’s too quiet. I guess I’m just strong-willed.” She teased.
“That’s alright. It was weird with you knowing everything; but we figured it.” Ryan responded.
“Yeah. Sam has to brag about everything.” Caleb teased.
“Ha! Very funny.” He snuggled into Brett’s side.
“So…you two are good again?” Amber asked.
Caleb nodded. “Yes, we’re fine. Thank you. It was ugly there for a bit; but we’re all good. No more time together, not like that.”
“Agreed.” Sam let out a deep breath and felt relieved. “Well…that was draining. Shall we go eat? I’m starved.”
“Hell yeah. I need to get some of that tiramisu.” Brett took Sam’s hand and started walking towards the steps.
“We’re good then?” Amber asked quietly.
"I’ll think about it. But right now strike two sounds good to me." Turning to Brett, Caleb, and Ryan. "How about you guys?" They look at each other and nod.
