Chapter 3 Haiku-Tail Thumps and Clicking Nails

Wake to silent house

No nails clicking on pine floors

Our sentry is gone

Aching loneliness

Memories lurk everywhere

Wish I had you back

Compelled to your grave

Airless football placed atop

Thought you might miss it

Tail thumps on the floor

Begging at your food cupboard

Missed pain in the ass

Bite marks on blue Frisbee

More tears from an endless well

Couldn’t throw it yet

These were wonderful Gary. The football had me bawling.

I can finally reply now. The football one was so hard. When I put it on her grave, I was a mess, and when my kids saw it there, they were the same. I felt kind of bad that I did it, because I didn't think of them seeing it. Thanks for reviewing, Lit... Gary

It took me four days until I caved and got a new puppy after my first dog died. I couldn't stand the silence and all the things you so expertly put in poetic words.

I just can't think of that yet. I was doing fine today, and then the mail came, with an incredible condolence card from our veterinarian, saying what a wonderful dog Mallory was, and what wonderful owners we were... It was signed by the whole clinic, and it was sweet, but it sent me into a tailspin again... thanks for the review, Adi... Gary

The 'couldn't throw it out yet' part resonated deeply with me. For a time I thought I could not bear to look at Leppy's bed in the kitchen, and considered tossing it out. But then, the other dogs began going to it, and I knew they were missing him too. That bed is used everyday by them now, and it's best that they still have a piece of 'him' too.

Thanks, Gary.

Thanks, Gary.

These ones were me at my lowest... when the reality of the permanence set in. It was the process necessary to heal. Thanks for giving me this outlet, and for reviewing...Gary
