Saying goodbye, and remembering.

Chapter 2 Haiku Odes to My Dog

Bereft at goodbye

Wagging tail forever still

Bark no longer heard

My best friend is gone

Pain of my loss consumes me

Hate this part of life

Twelve years and one month

Lifetime of mischief for you

A heartbeat for me

Looked at me with trust

Life seeped out while I held you

It had to be me

Brings back a lot of memories.
For me, it was 14 years and a day of being with my 'cheeky wee bugger' as my uncle referred to him quite frequently (deservedly so most of the time). Even though 23 years have passed, with a few words that day is as vivid in my mind as if it was yesterday . Dammit, now you've made me cry just thinking about Piper (he was a Westie, hence the name).
Okay, just flashed to one of his many escapades that earned him the cheeky moniker.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ☺️

Thanks, Reader... this has been a really awful day, but you just made it a little better. We called mine 'a pain in the ass' because she was so demanding... she knew her rights lol.And she was very vocal...even her breathing was nuanced... such a special dog...Thanks for reviewing and for making me remember a few more things... cheers... Gary

I've never had dogs, but I've lost my share of cats. It never gets any easier. You've captured the feeling of loss very poignantly. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks, Val... it's been a very tough day. This is the fifth time in my adult life, and you're right... it never gets any easier. Thanks for reviewing... Gary

Gary, that last one says it all to me...I've never let a pet go without my holding them since Duchess in '77...I just couldn't face losing her, my first conscious memory was getting her, and there wasn't a day we weren't together...
You know it's going to come, but it seems so far away, until it's not...were all those good memories worth the pain? Yes. It's a love devoid of doubt or insecurity--they give it freely.

It's kind of shocking how quick it happens... but I had to be the one to hold her. She looked in my eyes the whole time... I'll let the good memories in soon... Thanks, Buddy... Gary

These are very personal poems. Some wise person once said about canines that "we give them our spare food, our spare room, and our spare time; and in return, they give us their all."

Thanks for posing these, Gary.

Yes, these ones were very personal. In the past, I wouldn't have had this outlet. It showed me something about poetry and its power to release us. Writing these helped me move on. Thanks, AC... Gary

Gary, these are lovely and heartbreaking. I never had a pet til I met Michael, so his dog adopted me. He's 11 now, but fuck I don't know if I can handle it when his time comes. Don't know if i can be there, but it's right isn't it?
It should be us, the last thing he sees or feels.

This was a hard time for me, and all these just poured out of me. Absolutely it has to be the one or ones they love that they see last. It's the least we can do. As much as we mourn, we have to celebrate their memory, but I wasn't there yet. Thanks for the review, Tim. It pleases me that they touched you, and others. Cheers... Gary...
