Lyrical Laments - 1. Caught

Just some self-prescribed therapy. They're only words.

Lyrical Laments

Chapter 1 Caught

That moment

When the blinders fall off

And reality rakes its talons

Over your dubious shields

And you realize

With a sinking certainty

You don’t belong

That everything has changed

And you can’t pretend any longer

As much as you want to

You can’t turn a blind eye

Because the tears aren’t stopping

The ache keeps building

And frustration

Threatens to stop your heart

You

Don’t

Belong

Anymore

Where do you go

When you see no escape

What do you say

When there’s no point in speaking

Why bother

When no one is listening

To one lost soul

Caught in a sham

Like a fly in a web

Thanks for reading.

How many times have I felt this way?  Numberless instances from childhood's teen years...and afterwards too.  It amazes me how we survived to grow up, but are any of us left unmarked?  I don't think so.

What child hasn't had the thought which came, even as a fleeting vision, that he might be adopted, and the people around him weren't really his family?  I knew it wasn't true, had seen pics of me in the hospital in the nurse's hand with tubes everywhere...but there always comes the moment when you wonder--where is the person who truly knows and loves me for ME?

In a flash, like the anger that might have spawned it, the feeling of Unbelonging is gone...but the memory of it will be there for the rest of your life, unless you have no empathy or compassion to allow fellow-feeling.

Dang, is there any comfort food in the house?  Where's my chocolate?

You are the absolute best, buddy. you get me xoxo

It' nice to feel you belong, but it's even better to know you did the right thing, no matter what your peers may say or think. It's almost impossible as a teen, but with maturity and a good dose of stubbornness and integrity we may get there eventually.

Yeah... belonging is useless if you have compromised who you are. As much as I may want to belong, I don't need to. If we are fortunate enough to gain maturity, clarity often follows. That doesn't mean life can't throw us for loops or confuse us, because it can. Age plays a bigger part than I thought... perceptions of our worth changes for some, for sure... the trouble is, you don't know that until you get here :)  Thanks for sharing your thoughts, buddy... cheers... Hey Gary,

I have seen that you speak volumes in just few lines. Belonging...yeah I can get that. But I feel that for belonging people need to accept you for who you are. Acceptance automatically leads to belonging...I feel (please don't mind the childish babbling of mine)

As always Amazing writing!!!

Thanks, Aviana! This one was written at a painful time. I agree that acceptance is of utmost importance, but being true to yourself can negate that acceptance. It is something I have wrestled with. There is nothing childish about your comments, nor is it babbling. I can tell you put measured thought into your words, and I appreciate what you have to say :) . Thanks for thinking this amazing writing... cheers... Gary....

A sad beauty in this poem.  It expressed how I felt in high school most of the time.  As I matured it was less common and now rarely happens.  It still can happen as I age and feel the lose of friends and family.

I must admit, this is an uncomfortable poem for me. It takes me back to a time I struggled to understand. It's about friendships, really, or what you thought were friendships. I think it is probably a poem many can feel and relate to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Terry.
