Worth the Struggle - 2. Blu's Prologue

Blu’s Prologue

“What the…” Blu said to himself, pulling yet another large box of condoms and flavored lube out of his bag. He’d been rechecking his bags for his move to college one last time. He had been accepted to Boston University. This check of his bags there is also Anal Eaze. Blu snatched up the products and stomped down to the kitchen. His parents and Nan were having a cup of tea and arguing about which route to take. They had a two-hour trek ahead of them to get to the campus, and no one could agree which way to go. Blu was driving his car up to the BU, and his Dad was driving with him; his Mother and Nan in their car. They'd packed the cars the night before to make the morning easier, it was down to the last three bags to be loaded, and they would be off.

“What’s this?” Blu said as he placed the products on the table.

“Well Blu, these here are raincoats," his Nan held up the box of condoms, "they go on your pecker," she then reached for the lube, "and this is a lubricant, you know because the anus doesn't release a natural lubricant. The Anal Eaze, I'm sure you can figure out from the name… I didn't know if you were a top or bottom. Either way, it will come in handy. Most people keep them in a drawer beside the bed. That’s where I keep my sex aids.” Blu stood in front of his family a little bashful, his Nan had never had a filter nor did she sugar coat anything. Even though it is nothing for his family to talk about sex, sometimes it was still too much for Blu.

“Geez, Nan, I’ll have a roommate. It's not likely I'll get much action unless he's a voyeur. Plus I've found these in all my bags; they'll hit their expiry before I get to use that much. I've had sex once in eighteen years. You've packed me nearly two hundred condoms, and over a liter of lube, I'm not going to college to run an underground sex club.” Blu admonished his Nan.

"Maybe you should. You'd earn enough to pay for college and get yourself one of those little black book thingies. You know like that Heidi woman." Nan laughed raucously, so did his Father."

“Oooh is that an option Blu, because the money could be helpful,” Blu’s Mom asked seriously.

“Dear God, can we not embarrass me when we get there. Please!” Blu sighed and exited the kitchen hoping they would comply.

Back in his bedroom, Blu did one more check through his bathroom and drawers. He closed his bags and dragged them downstairs. His Dad came through and helped him load the last of his belongings. As we finished my best friend Brandon arrived, he came over to me with his girlfriend in tow. Brandon was a year older than Blu and had joined the Marines straight out of school. Thankfully he'd been at the local base since training. His girlfriend Jennifer was the sweetest girl Blu had ever met, he adored her.

“Hey Bud, we’ve come to say goodbye,” Brandon hugged Blu so tight he could barely breathe.

"Thanks so much, I was hoping you'd make it. I didn't want to bother you, and I know you can't always get away." Blu told Brandon sincerely.

“Are you sure you have to go Blu, I like having you around,” Jennifer said to Blu, unshed tears in her eyes while she hugged him, “Make sure you come back for the wedding,” she smiled.

“Are you serious, when?” Blu grinned looking at his best friend and shaking his hand, “Congratulations! I’m so happy for you Brandon,”

“Hey what about me?” Jen lightly slapped Blu’s arm.

“Oh honey, you can do better,” Blu laughed putting his arm around Jen giving her another hug. When he released her, Brandon punched him in the arm.

“Ow, asshole,” Blu and Brandon laughed, "I'll be back for the wedding, or anytime you need me. I'm only two hours away, you just call, and I'll be there."

Blu’s Dad came up behind them, “Congratulations Son,” he said shaking Brandon's hand. Then he hugged Jenny when he broke the embrace he held her at arm's length, "Jenny sweetheart, blink twice if you're being held against your will," Jenny laughed, "Oh Phew! I was worried there for a second."

"Thanks a lot, Mr. Waters," Brandon laughed.

Blu’s Mom and Nan came out of the house locking up ready to leave. His Dad told them about the impending nuptials.

"Congratulations, that's fantastic news," said Mom, and hugging the happy couple.

"Ah, Shit! Ya knocked her up didn’t ya. Did he?” Nan asked looking at Jennifer.

“No,” Jennifer laughed, “I promise Nan, there’s no baby – Yet!”

"Well, what are you waiting for. Jesus Brandon, I bet ya swimmers don’t work do they?” Nan baited Blu’s best friend.

“Nan! Leave them alone,” Blu chastised his Nan.

“What? What did I say?” Blu rolled his eyes while his Nan continued, “he’s got that friggin’ baseball bat in his pants, ya think he’d be able to knock the pretty young girl up, for Christ's sake.” Nan turned away mumbling all the way till she got in the passenger side of Blu’s parent's car.

They all snickered as they watched Nan get into the car.

They finally reached the campus in the afternoon. It had been a long two hours. Blu had listened to his Dad recant all his old memories from college and was in need of a mental health break. He was stressed about leaving home. He'd never really been away from his family. Crazy as they may be he loved them, and they were fun to be around. They found a spot as close to his dorm room as he could and cut the engine on the car. He blew out a breath and leaned back in his seat.

“Are you sure you want to do this Blu? You don't have to go to college if you don't want. You could always come work with Mom and me." Blu’s family owned the local nursery in their town. It was a successful small business. His parents would be happy for him to take over one day, but Blue was determined to forge his path.

"Yes, I do Dad, if those asshole teacher's had done their jobs, Rain would still be here today. Look I know I was young when she died, and I know it’s not as simple as I think it is in my head, but I want to do this for her. No kid should feel like they have to take their own life at twelve-years-old because they can’t take the bullying. I want to make sure it never happens to another family.” Blu said, his bottom lip quivering and his eyes filled with tears. Changing the topic before he totally lost it, “I…I’m just nervous, about the roommate mostly. What if he’s an asshole, I’m stuck with him for a year.”

“Let’s go meet him before you condemn him to a life of the cold shoulder, hey. I lay my money on you guys being lifelong friends.” His father said encouragingly.

“Do you ever see things glass half empty Dad?” Blu screwed up his face.

“Nope, don’t see the point. Worrying about something that hasn’t happened is a waste of good energy. Look around you Blu. There are hot guys everywhere. It'll be as much fun as you make it.” His Dad said waggling his eyebrows at Blu.

“You’re such a perve,” he chortled at his father.

“Okay, stop flappin’ ya gums. Let’s go and find this room and get you unpacked.”

As the family approached Blu’s new room, a gorgeous older black man walked out with a young guy probably a year or so younger than himself. He was cute, blond hair with green eyes, nice and lean like he was maybe a swimmer or runner. The young boy burst into tears as he walked by, the family watched sympathetically as the older man put his arm around the boy and pulled him close. After the two of them reached the elevator, Blu reached out and opened his door. He juggled with his box and then walked through and there in front of him was the most beautiful guy he'd ever come across. Blu froze, he dropped his box to the floor. His throat went dry, and his palms started to sweat, he was speechless and captivated.

Nan blurted out, “Fuck me, he’s a stud muffin,” elbowing Blu in the back, pushing him toward his roommate, “Well don’t just stand there, introduce yourself,”

“Huh? Oh yeah, sorry. Umm…Hi, I…I’m gay,” Blu stuttered.

B).............. Oh boy, the first chapter so different basically an emotionless family save the brothers, while the 2nd chapter introduces some real characters, that Nan is something else. It is probably good that Blu is so used to her that nothing seems to faze him. Still he probably should have checked his voice before meeting his new room mate, novel way of an introduction though.  :P

Kyle and Kaleb definitely come from polar opposite types of parents from Blu. Blu and his family create a dynamic role to Kyle and Kaleb's life that will become more noticeable as the story progresses. Thanks for reading, we hope you see this journey through the end.

What a great idea, two characters each written by a different author! It makes it so much more...authentic. Can’t wait to read more!

@Kjamieson it is quite a different approach as neither of us has divulged much to the other offer beyond basics of our character, and we write the story literally together and react to the others writing. There has been a lot of belly splitting laughter just bringing the boys to life in the story, we both really hope everybody enjoys the story. All the kind words and comments mean a lot to both of us, it's a pleasure to read when we see our characters make a connection with you the readers. Til the next chapter.... Cheers!

Two principal characters each one written bt a different author -- an interesting means of character development. Of course Nan is the type of character that is the most fun to write but I feel the most interesting writing challenge is going to be the development of the relationship between the boys. The two authors are either going to love or despise one another by several weeks into the tale!! It is going to be interesting -- in the Chinese Philosophy sense!

Okay, I am going to assume (and you know what that makes me) that I will be reading two versions of events, one written from Kyles viewpoint and the other from Blu's. Each written by a different author. Kyle apparently having been subject of up-tight social climber parents who are disgusted with his selection of a college major, feeling that music even as a teacher is beneath their status, a man deeply in the closet, not perhaps by choice, but forced there by his parents attitude. The other man, Blu, embarrassed by parents who are very aware of his orientation and choose to encourage him (with a lifetime supply of Anal-Ease and rubbers)-

I have the feeling that I have read this series before, but at my age (87 next birthday) while I feel in possession of almost all my mental faculties, I do find gaps at intervals. (Like just this week, my partner, who is Portuguese by birth, ask me what was the name in English of the carnival ride that went around a long track with ups and downs and sharp curves, and it took me an hour or so to think of the words 'roller coaster).
