Liam's story - 8. Chapter 8

Chapter 8
Wow. Toby Bennett kissed me. Like actually kissed me. My brain kicked in after about 20 seconds and I managed to kiss him back. Wow. To say I was confused is an understatement.
I didn’t want the moment to end, but it had to. “Whoa, what was that?” I asked, still in a state of disbelief and shock.
“A kiss.” Toby replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Yeah, I figured that part out, but why?”
“I don’t know. I just wanted to. Since you’re being honest with me, I should be honest with you too. I’ve had some feeling for you lately that weren’t there before. That’s why I’ve been avoiding you. It was a shitty thing to do and I’m sorry.”

Wow, that was a lot to process. Toby has feelings for me? I have literally been dreaming of this for years. My mind was racing a mile a minute, I don’t remember the last time I felt this happy, elated. Until I thought it through some more and my excitement was stopped dead in its tracks. “What about your girlfriend?”
“Girlfriend?” Toby asked, confused.
“Yeah, that brunette that was all over you at your parents barbeque?”
“Oh, Mandy?”
“I have no idea what her name is. Just that you two seemed happy together.”
“I can see how you might think that. Mandy is a friend.”
He must have read my skepticism on my face, because I didn’t have to say anything before he added.
“Okay, yes, she’s a friend. With Benefits. We normally keep things kind of under wraps, but she got some good news and was excited when she came over to my parents that night and got a little carried away.”
“Oh, so you guys are sleeping together? And you like me?” I asked, confused.
Toby shrugged. “Yeah.”
“Okay, not really what I was expecting.” I admitted. “So, what happens now?”
Toby smiled, his big smile, the real one where you see all his teeth, and his eyes shine. He leaned in to kiss me again. His lips were warm, he stepped in a little closer and wrapped his arms around me. I softly kissed him back and melted in to his embrace. He pulled his lips off mine but made no effort to move away. “I guess we should go on a date or something. I think that’s what happens now.”
“I would like that. What do you have in mind?”
“I don’t know yet. But I will think of something.” He leaned back down and kissed me again. I could get used to this. This one wasn’t soft or gentle like the first two. It started out that way but heated up pretty quickly. He pushed me back towards my car until I was pinned between him and the car. The car felt cold on my back but I was more than warm with the feel of him pressed up against my front. He pushed his hips in to me. I could feel his excitement pressing into me, just above my pubic bone, just a little to high to provide any friction with my own erection.
His hand wandered to my ass while his lips moved to my neck. I did all a could to make my self a little taller, stepping up on my toes trying to get my pelvis aligned with his. He figured out my actions, opened his legs slightly to bring his hips down to meet mine. He thrust his hips in to mine, finally, I was getting the friction I needed. Feeling how hard he was against me was incredible. I didn’t recognize the noises that were coming from me.
And then it was over. He stepped back, away from me. My heart sunk a little bit before he spoke. “As much as I would love to keep going, we need to stop. I want to do this right. You’re important to me, and as tempting as it is to rip off all your clothes right here we need to slow down a bit.” He seemed almost nervous, I don’t know why. There is no way I would be rejecting Toby freaking Bennett.
I couldn’t help but smile. “Okay, I get that.”
“Okay then. I’ll call you and we’ll plan something.”
“It’s a date.”

I still had some unanswered questions, mostly about Mandy and his friendship with her, but for now I was going to be happy and enjoy this. It was hard not to speed home, I was just so excited with life.
I didn’t see my parents when I got home. It was still early, around three p.m. Both their cars were there but I didn’t see them. I grabbed a snack from the fridge and bounded up the stairs. I walked straight up Josh’s room, the door was open and I waltzed right in, I had to share my good news, my happiness. Until it donned on me that Josh wasn’t there to share my excitement with. Damn.
It wasn’t the first time I tried to reach out to Josh only to find he wasn’t there. Sometimes I would write a whole text to him before I realized he would never receive it, or pick up the phone to call him, but there was never an answer.
It might not have been the first time this had happened but it still hurt. It hurt every time. It ripped me right off of cloud nine that I had been riding on since my meeting with Toby.
I sat down on Josh’s bed and just hung out in his room for a while. I felt the bed dip beside me. “You okay kiddo?” Dad asked.
I shook my head. “No, I literally just had the best afternoon of my life. I came to tell Josh about it and he’s not here. How do I forget that he’s not here?” I looked away to wipe my eyes quickly. Dad pulled me into him so his arm was around my shoulders and my head was resting on his.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself Liam, he’s been around your whole life until now, its normal to just expect him to be there. This is new, it will take some getting used to. I wish you didn’t have to get used to it, but its the way it is.” I just nodded in to his shoulder. I must be going crazy. I don’t think its normal to be so happy and giddy one minute to being unable to talk past the lump in my throat trying to blink back my tears before they fall the next. “Do you want to tell me about ‘the best afternoon of your life’?”
“I do, but I don’t think I’m ready to yet.”
“Okay. I know your scared, and I won’t push you, but I am here.” He stood, kissed me on the forehead. He used to do that when I was a kid. It was oddly reassuring. He turned and walked away. I stopped him as he got to the door way.
“Dad?” I asked, my head down.
“Yeah, Liam?” he turned back towards me but didn’t come any closer.
I slowly looked up at him before responding. “I’m gay.”
“I know.” He smiled, came towards me. Kissed me one more time on the forehead and left the room.

B)...............Hey, some parts bring back memories, I too remembered the many times I dialed a phone number, reacted to a shared TV program calling out that it was on. Took me at least a year to stop picking up the phone to dial that number. Once 20 years ago and another 5 years ago, with too many other times in hospice and hospitals to count.

I'm a little leery of Rob, I don't know why but I am, nice chapter!

Liam is so lucky to have the parents he has.  Like Benji, too many times I’ve experienced that reality disconnect after losing someone.  It’s hard. You wove that into the story very well.

I’m also wary of Toby.  It seems too easy, and even makes me wonder about the nature of his friendship with Josh.  Is Toby transferring feelings he had for Josh to his deceased best friend’s little brother - either as confused compensation for his loss or as a subconscious proxy for Josh?  I hope not.  It could be just me overthinking a gay story line when I should be asleep.  ;-)

And then there’s the Mandy as fb problem.  If I were Liam, I think that would stop me dead in my tracks.  Morever, Toby’s and Mandy’s kiss at the BBQ seemed a bit too openly passionate for just friends with benefits on the DL.

And....Liam is underage!

I agree with tesao when it comes to  Toby. He loved Josh, and now that he's gone his brother will do? Not liking Toby very much after his lame explanations. I also have a big issue on how Toby just kinda glossed over Mandy, like it wasn't a big deal. He also never mentioned putting a stop to their being friends with benefits. Just jumped right to a date. For me, I question how trustworthy Toby would be. I don't see him being very trustworthy at all. Also, judging Mandy's behavior at the bbq, she probably sees it as more than a fuck buddies scenario. I see poor Liam being hurt in the end if he starts anything with Toby.

Thanks for your comment! It’s nice to hear my characters inner dialogue is relatable, even if it isn’t something we wish we didn’t relate to.

Thank you! Yes, Liam is very lucky to have the dad he has.

So so many people weary of Toby! I guess we’ll have to see how it plays it out!

and Liam’s age, he’s 17 almost 18, Toby is only a year and a halfish older than him, I don’t see that as a huge problem. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.

Another toby hater! Liam is a little weary of the whole Mandy situation, we’ll just have to see how it plays out 🙂

I am not sure I agree with everyone else.  Everything said is possible, but Toby did try and pull away when he was developing feeling for Liam. He broke off the kiss. We also don’t know his relationship with Josh or why Josh killed himself. I’m sure all will be revealed in time. Thanks for the chapter and story.

Someone giving toby a break! You’re right we don’t know too much about his friendship with josh yet.

Thank you you for taking the time to comment, I love reading comments!

I guess we all love Liam so much that we can’t help but be a bit wary, given the red flags and unknowns you’ve tossed into the plot..   ;-)   And you’re right, the small age difference isn’t a problem at all -  until and unless they have sex while Liam is still a minor - and then it’s a potentially huge problem, depending on the extent of the sexual activity (and the jurisdiction ).

@tesao don’t worry, the boys are in Canada 🇨🇦 16 is the age of consent here :2thumbs:

but you’re right, and I too am quite fond of Liam and don’t want to see him get hurt either :read:

Whew!  I admit that California law is my frame of reference; Canada’s age of consent is, frankly,  much more enlightened. As you probably know, the UK’s is now also 16.   Leave it to sex-phobic America to insist on 18.

As one of Gilda Radner’s characters on SNL used to say, “never mind”.

So, then we should expect some hot chapters coming up?

:D

PS...I’m still queasy about Mandy.
