Lyrical Laments - 23. Chapter 23 **** Politics

What a horrifying situation....
Warning: Political themes in this social commentary, so read no further if that makes you uncomfortable. I am not political... just a concerned citizen of this world, one who has no political affiliations, but I can see through the BS.

                                                                                                                                                                                     ***

Fuck Politics

The world burns orange

And chaos rules the dark

Boiling rage spilling over

As the acrid smoke

Of burning shoes and upholstery

Colors darkly, broken hearts

Used as footballs

For partisan battles

At daybreak

Laying blame left and right

Dueling narratives

That miss the point

A few bad apples?

Really?

Which of you watches the world burn

With glee?

I see you... oh yes, I see you

Will humanity prevail?

Will haters be beaten?

And can the yoke be lifted willingly?

Or has the Great Experiment failed?

I feel shame and sadness

For the waste of life and lives

And the reluctance to learn

And the reluctance to do what’s right

From leaders who don’t lead

Haiku: Caught

Cameras don’t lie

Yet still the truth is massaged

As haters rally

Haiku: Patterns

Wait for smoke to clear

And protect the old boys’ club

Till hope dies again

Haiku: Lynching

A foot on the neck

Is the perfect metaphor

For staunch injustice

Horrifying, but all too familiar. The UK is far from perfect when it comes to POC; I know I am, though I strive to improve. The US though, seems stuck in a jaw-droppingly awful groundhog day. I can't imagine how POC feel in America's cities with police forces who seem to delight in using force well beyond any boundary. It's unlikely to change while rule-by-Tweet continues.  :/

It is truly horrendous, isn't it? And yes, it is hard to envision a significant change occurring under such leadership. Thanks, northie.

I like both Haikus best. They are so poignant, so expressive in their concise wording.

The news of another careless, witnessed murder by police has shocked me. The fact that his colleagues stood by doing nothing. The fact that bystanders, upset and horrified, were ignored. The fact that .... the list goes on and on and on...

And you are only too right: the waste of life and lives

You mention the supposed leader. Not sure if his lack of leadership in this is not something to be relieved at.

Thanks, mayday!  I enjoy writing Haiku. They force one to condense their thoughts... and it makes the words used more meaningful. I know many of us are still reeling from what we witnessed... it's hard to fathom such cruelty and arrogance. Leaders are supposed to lead, but some are incapable of the compassion needed. I pray for calm, and I pray for progress... it's time to shine continuous light on this insidious cancer. :(

What can be said when society's moral compass has failed us?  You don't need religion to point out that some things are just not right, and our shared humanity is drowned in a sea of rhetoric from all sides that cares nothing for coming together as one unit to share our better selves for a solution to our problems.
Civilization is a tissue thin veneer easily torn away by those who always wait for the opportunity to tear things down so we sink back into the mire of the primordial swamp.  The light which occasionally shines as a beacon to a better future gutters now and could easily be blown out...
I am reminded of the final verse of Zager & Evans' In The Year 2525:

'Now it's been 10,000 years,

Man has cried a billion tears

For what, he never knew,

Now Man's reign is through...'

Maybe some other species will make a better world some day.

Sorry Gary, I just could not resist commenting in a pitiful haiku. :gikkle:

I love when readers respond with poetry... and it is not pitiful at all. Good poetry has a message, and I hear yours. :)

This was a hard poem to write in that I felt such anguish at the time. Even more, I was horrified. In some ways, I have become numb, and I think that is how many of us cope. Thanks, Terry.
