The Great Mirror of Same-Sex Love - Poetry - 77. The Fart of Every Heart

.

The Fart of Every Heart

If, when Don Cupid’s Dart

Doth wound a Heart.

We hide our Grief

And shun Relief;

The Smart increaseth on that Score;

For Wounds unsearched but rankle more.

Then if we whine, look pale,

And tell our Tale,

Men are in Pain

For us again;

So neither speaking doth become

The Lovers State, nor being dumb.

When this I do descry,

Then thus think I,

Love is the Fart

Of every Heart:

It pains a Man when ‘tis kept close,

And others does offend, when ‘tis let loose.

—John Suckling, [i]

1640

That’s fantastic. I read it through twice, my grin growing through the scanning. It’s absolutely true, and a very apt metaphor.

It's rare I post two poems by the same author in a row for the Mirror, but there's something unique about Suckling's work. A blend of melancholy with his gaiety that makes him memorable and a stand-out.

As always, my friend, thanks for reading and commenting
