Why Am I Different? - 1. Why Am I Different?

Why am I so different,
From everyone I know?
I knew it long before
I really started to grow

I think I fell in love once
With a boy, I thought I knew
Then I tried to kiss him
An act I'd greatly rue

He went on to beat me
Within an inch of my life
He yelled at me this something
"Why don't you get a wife?"

A wife I never wanted
Yet needed to fit in
I must avoid the battles
I knew I'd never win

Later on, the day would come
When a boy noticed me
Afraid 'coz I was different
I felt I had to flee

I could not escape
This boy he did pursue
When caught I then was kissed
No longer was I blue

Went on to spend my life
With this boy I'd never met
All the while we were together
I felt I owed a debt

All at once, I realized
different, I am no more
no more than everyone I knew —
emotions about to soar

Why am I so different,
From everyone I knew?
I'm different, as we all are
I know that much is true

And the powerful seem to have more disdain for those that are different than the folks who are just trying to get by.

Who, lacking the desire
or ability to see
beyond differences,
respond in their ignorance
with rejection
or hatred or violence,
are to be pitied
because they
can't or don't or won't
see the beauty of diversity.
Who, in power
pander to
and stir up
the weak and ignorant,
drawing their strength
from the weakness and hate
of others,
are undeniably
evil.

It's no surprise you said it better than me, also very poetically. Nice.
