Kleine Lieder

 

Das sind die kleinen Lieder,

Die mir das Herz zerbrechen,

Weil sie so seltsam leise fallen

Wie Schnee vor den Fenstern zur Dämmerungszeit.

Weil sie so sehnsüchtig verhallen,

Als ob wir beide noch von Liebe sprechen.

Und weil mein Herz schwer ist,

Schwer – von ungelebter Seligkeit. [i]

Children’s Songs

 

These are the children’s songs which

Are able to break my heart,

Because they fall so strangely soft

Like snow outside windows at dusk.

Because they fall so lovingly soft

As if everyone were speaking of love.

And because my heart’s full,

Heavy – from unrealized bliss.

Thanks, ReaderPaul. Toni Schwabe's poetic style, her entire aesthetic (I think), is summed up beautifully in this poem. There's no other poet in history who published anything quite as delicate-yet-powerful as this
