The Ultimate Vehicle of Earthly Bliss - 26. As if raising the dead

.

Du rufst mich, wie man Tote ruft –

Ich kann nicht aufstehn aus der Gruft

Ich höre deine Stimme kaum

Die dringt durch Endlichkeit und Raum

So fern und schwach wie das Vergessen.

Du – einmal hast du mich besessen!

Und einmal habe ich gelebt. [i]

---------------------------------

You called as if raising the dead –

But I cannot rise from the tomb

For I can barely hear your voice

As it penetrates finitude

And space as faint as oblivion.

And to think, you – you once possessed me

And once I had a chance to live.

Such a swift and wrenching poem. It’s a story in itself, and it leaves me feeling hollow.

Thanks, Parker. A poem like this I feel is part of the reason Toni Schwabe needs to be better known
