Being Fixed - More Issues

Sooooo, went for my pre-op appointment on Thursday. Nurse is concened about my blood pressure. "You need to see your GP, Mr. Landon." Really?

"This likely won't stop your surgery but you need to go." Okay.

So I go home and make an appointment for Friday morning.

Friday. Yes, it's still high, but not as bad as I was at the hospital. "I'd like to get you started on meds, Tim, but you were a walk-in patient and we don't have any history. I need to do some tests before I can do anything more." Sure, doc, I understand that.

(We did have a GP, but she left town and her patients behind. There were no doctors taking patients around here. I did go to a walk-in clinic but they were beyond uninterested. I went once with an issue I'd need surgery for and the doc said, "What do you want me to do?

I swear to God, that's what he said. Michael was ready to blow a gasket.

I said, "I don't know, maybe some tests? Or a referral?"

I had no faith in that horrible man. I'm sure he hated gay people.)

So back to Friday, I had some blood work done. Went home and called the surgeon's office. They called back saying it should be okay, but you need to be on meds asap. I left a message with my GP, nothing back from them as of yet.

So.. your guess is as good as mine if I will have surgery on Tuesday. I hope I'll hear something back from my GP before that.

In the meantime, I'm watching my salt intake, walking, eating the low fat DASH Diet, and waiting.

Just you wait until old age creeps up on you, then you'll really hate doctors. I have a note on my calendar on the 15th: TL Surgery. I'll be thinking of my kid in Canada hoping all goes well.

With stupid people like that no wonder your blood pressure is high. I'd have thought low blood pressure would be more of an issue in relation to surgery, but what do I know.

Oh how frustrating!  My BP was high when I went for my pre-op testing, but they attributed it to anxiety over the surgery.  It was also high when they took my vitals before wheeling me into the surgery room, but said that it was normal for BP to run higher since people are generally nervous about being operated on. I'm sorry you have to deal with such idiots.  Fingers crossed they still do the operation!

You need the surgery. Your surgeon better know that...

I'm watching everything I eat and drink, gonna make sure I exercise and get enough sleep.. last ditch efforts that may help.. that's all I can do... then it's up to them. Thanks AC xoxo

Thanks C. I like the new doc. But that other guy.. geez. I've decided a lot of my health answers are up to me. I never thought about it really before, but they are. I'm motivated to help myself, the current diet is evidence of that and I'm not afraid to tweak it more. There's a world of options, you just have to make them. I will get more exercise and make sure I get enough sleep.

Thanks C, xo

 Outta likes .. ikr?  All this running around and phone calls. argh. But the fact is, it's high and so what can I do about it? I'd like more options than just take a pill. So hopefully diet and exercise will help as well. Once the tests are back I can talk to my doc about it again.

Thanks, Tim xo

High blood pressure can be caused by a lot of things... you need to know the reason, tim, or at least have some ruled out. I'm frustrated for you... some doctors just don't give a damn...

Don't know Gary ... this guy seems to but I need to talk to him more. But because of the surgery it was a bit of a panic.. he took some blood to check different things today.

Hang in there tim. I have firmly believe it will all work out in the end.

It will, deciding to make dietary changes and getting stuff done as much as I can, made me feel better. Making some choices for the future also made me feel better.  Thanks, Reader for you help and advice.xoxox

OK 160 is a bit high, but at least the 80 is right in the middle of the recommended score, as far as I know. Someone once said the upper score should be 100 plus your age, so I guess you could say you have a higher body age than time-line age. And that's perhaps understandable with everything you have been through. I wouldn't worry too much, as you're already focused on healthy living. Stress also causes high blood pressure, and I bet pain will push it up too. Hopefully, once your surgery is over and you feel better, everything else will fall into place too.

Please ask Mike to give you lots of  and  on my behalf.

Laying off the salt helps me a lot. My medicine causes hypertension. =( I hope the surgery goes well!

Found a recipe for teriyaki sauce...salt free!

Thanks, I'm watching the salt very carefully! Rather enjoying the cooking challenge!

160/80 is not that high especially before surgery. The stress pulls systolic high. A couple of days bedtime anxiolytics fixes that. That's how we deal with it here. I think it is unlikely that they will find anything seriously wrong. In India it is the surgeon's responsibility to manage the perioperative hypertension. He may send for a internal medicine consult. But sending back to GP for this, seems juvenile. Guess that's why we provide better service in a far more resource limited situation. Worried a little here. Take care.

It wasn't the surgeon sending me back, it was the nurse. Thanks for this, my friend. Makes me feel a bit better.

Honestly, they only add to the stress.. nurse tells you to get back to GP, GP tells you to call your surgeon, Surgeon is in surgery!! How about that???, So Surgeon's reception (who is wonderful btw), calls him, calls me back in under 20 minutes to say should be fine, but you need to follow up with GP later. So you call the GP and leave a message, but 3 days later  no response from them.  Geez.

Be glad when it's over. In the meantime, I'm watching salt, fat, exercise and sleep, as best I can.

A nurse can postpone a surgery... wow. So much power!

This sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare. Healthy living choices are always welcome. It will actually help you on  the long run. Try not to stress over the surgery. It's the system that is stupid. More happy thoughts your way.

P.S. Has the nurse heard of "Whitecoat Hypertension"? And did she diagnose a patient with hypertension on her own with a single measurement on a pre-operative visit? So knowledgeable.

Lol, not sure they have that much power! But they have more than they used to. I don't know what she knows ... going tomorrow, I guess they'll do what they decide to. Thanks for the very sarcastic reply, I'm still laughing! Made my day!

Mum thinks your BP is likely due to preop stress and pain. She suggested a nice bacrub from Michael. I think borrowing the neighbor's dog for snuggles and walkies might help. The reduced salt is a good idea on general principle. We consume too much. My BP tends to bump up when I eat something with too much. Be well little brother. Hugs.
