Weekly Wrap Up (Oct. 25 - Oct. 31)

Depending on your time zone:

Happy Halloween
Happy Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Happy ( ) Dia de los Inocentes (All Saints Day)
Happy ( ) Dia de los Muertos (All Souls Day)

It appears that Week 3 has been released for the Yearly Anthology. This means the past 3 weeks have all been dedicated to the Anthology. How many more weeks of new releases? I know but I am sworn to secrecy under the fear of 100 penguin warriors that have been trained to nip at the human knees like they were a jugular. 🐧 I don't think any of you have to guess who the evil and sinister person is that did the training and deployed them in my city under disguise in the zoo 😮 I just happened to see an article about the zoo having 100 new residents. I hope the zoo keepers are safe

For some reason I woke up at 2 PM today. Why you ask? Or maybe you don't ask, so I won't tell. My lips are sealed for now :P

One of the effects of my late rising kind of ties into the question of the week. Taxis or Uber, Lyft or other ride companies?

When Uber first tried to break into the area market there was a lot of pushback from taxi companies and the general public. Afterall, the taxis had to have a business license and on top of that a taxi license. The belief was that this was a safer way to have the people vetted that are picking you up. I think the general public was under the assumption that taxi operators had some kind of training or requirements to have a taxi license.

Uber did what they do, they pushed and pushed until a test period was set up. Nowadays you just accept that you have multiple choices when you go out, or when you need a ride home. The advantage of Uber or Lyft, is you know what you are going to pay. If you don't ride taxi's often, it is hard to tell what that would cost. Also, with the ride companies, you don't have to wait forever wondering when you car is coming. You are informed who your driver is and how long until they arrive. Personally, I have never waited more than a minute past the time to get the car promised.

This morning at 2:30 AM 😮 I was looking on my phone to see how long, how much for a Uber. It was within 5 minutes and would be $35 and change. This I thought was a bit high, but thought oh well I know when the car will come and how much it will be. As I was about to hit the request button, I looked up and as I was on a busy downtown street, saw a cab coming towards me with its For Hire light on in the windshield. I flagged him over, jumped in and shut down the Uber app. I do remember in the olden days ;) like back in the 90's, if you didn't add some comment on what route to take, you could find yourself going on a site seeing expedition. I kept my mouth shut and my driver took the exact route I would have suggested. My bill, $22 and change. Guess I will have to keep that in mind too that maybe Uber might have the extras, but maybe also 33% more expensive. Also, had no issue with tipping him 20% as well.

So, my question may exclude people that don't live in a city or an area that doesn't have ride companies. Do you use taxi's or ride companies? If you use one or the other and you have chosen one over the other, what it is the reason why? Let's as always keep it clean, we are a PG audience in the Gay Authors Weekly Wrap Up :gikkle:.

Now shall we see what all happened in the past week?

As far as your question about which service I used to provide me rides, this is my answer.  My Medicare Advantage plan covers the cost of ten round-trip rides to medical or dental related services.  They use both Uber and Lyft, but they tend to use Uber more often.

I recently used up the last of my Medicare covered rides and had to pay for the next one myself.  I used Uber, and since the ride was for a destination that was about 75 miles away, the charge reflected the distance and the time it would take.  Since I had to go there for medically related care, I bit the bullet.  I must admit that my rides were both clean, the drivers careful and courteous, so I will used them again for my follow-up appointment which will occur in a few days.  2027 cannot get here soon enough for me, because on January 1, 2027 my next ten round-trip Medicare paid trips become available.

When we worked in Boston for the longest time, we were at the mercy of the taxi companies; a medallion to own, operate, or rent a taxi from another driver cost between 200,000 and 250,000 dollars, certainly not chicken feed.

When Uber came to town, it caused quite a stink, as the rides were much more affordable; with the bonus, you knew ahead of time your pick-up time, costs, and route.  While not common, in a taxi you needed to let the driver know you knew the way to your destination.

I prefer using Uber simply for the convenience.

We use both Uber and local taxis. We use local cabs to haul groceries home and Uber for longer trips. Uber is cheaper for longer rides.

Like @Bill W, my insurance plan (an amalgam of various insurance players) offers free rides to and from healthcare appointments. I tried the service for the first time last week. Unfortunately, the driver to my appointment was late (although, to be fair, I did arrive on time) and the tiny little Toyota Prius car reeked of smoke (even though it was cold out I didn't complain when he left his front window open), yuck. He ate snacks and talked on the phone for nearly the whole one hour ride.

For the return trip I had to give up my prebooked ride because things were just taking too long for my appointment. But as luck would have it, because it was late afternoon by the time I needed a ride home, the car service booked me a ride using Lyft and a hybrid Toyota Camry. The difference between the two rides was night and day. I don't think I need say which ride was day.

Otherwise, when I lived in Boston and public transportation was not an option I used Uber. Why? Well, it was the first to arrive in the city and I signed up right away (cabs were unpredictable) but by the time Lyft arrived I was too lazy to sign up for it.

We use Uber, as it's cheaper than the local taxi firms

Generally, in my area you only have Uber, I don't think Austin, Texas or any of the surrounding areas have any surviving taxi services available.  More mixture in some areas or cities that still have taxis, but I do admit the drivers from Uber/Lyft/etc.. seem to be more personable.

As always, thanks for the weekly update, and can't wait to start reading that latest stories that were posted last Thursday, finally have time to set down and do so.
