Weekly Wrap Up (Oct. 4 - Oct. 10)

Happy Nadian Thanksgiving!!! 🦃

We do go a little wild up here in the Great White North. No, we are not covered in snow yet, but close :gikkle:

a chicken is laying on its back on a table with the words `` happy twerky day '' written above it .

So since it is in the news here, I thought I would bring this up earlier than normal. Usually I talk about the dreaded, not to me, changing of the clocks for Daylight Savings Time. Well, why it is in the news, is that British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba have decided to do away with falling back and staying on Daylight Savings Time. Saskatchewan is on permanent Standard Time for a few years now. Personally, I would have preferred to have permanent standard time, but those people that they call politicians didn't give anyone the option :( Now no ranting about those people ;) Go to the Pit for that.

I do believe Arizona and Hawaii are the only CURRENT American states that don't change. So Arizona is on permanent Standard Time, yay, as well as Hawaii. Hawaii is different due to their proximity to equator. Makes sense, every day on the equator would be the same year round, would it not?

Now, the reason I want permanent standard time. In the dead of winter, we will not see the sun here until like 9:30 AM 😮 Think of all the little kiddies going to school in the dark. What about me going to work in the dark and probably coming home in the dark. Don't I count ;)? I think I would rather go to bed in the summer when it is still light out than working during the whole day whilst the sun is up. Nevermind the hodgepodge of timezones being created. Some one way, some another way and the others not doing any changes. I guess where I always knew I was 2 hours earlier than the Eastern Time Zone, but now in November it will be only 1 😮 That means a certain author in 'tucky can harass me later into the night :gikkle:

I did have to laugh at a person at work, who was concerned when they flew somewhere this winter, it would take an extra hour. Took a bit explaining that the plane will be in the air the same amount of time, that doesn't change, but the time you land may be different from in the past 0:). Sometimes change is hard to grasp.  ✈️

So here is the 4 part question for the week!

  1. Do you do DST and ST changes twice a year?
  2. Do you want to continue to do the changes, or are you ready to eliminate them?
  3. If you want to change, do you want permanent Daylight Saving Time?
  4. If you want to change, do you want permanent Standard Time.

Okay, I have beat that dead horse to a pulp 😮 Onto the Wrap Up...

Cia was in on Monday to bring us a brand new CSR story. Check it out! That is if you don't have a weak heart 😮:

Tuesday, Myr popped in after he went diving very early in the AM. Check out what he caught. I don't think anything was made up :D:

That was it  What a hard, exhausting week it was for me. Now you know why my preamble went on and on and on :gikkle:.

Myr didn't get a light week as he continued to stupify me on the Words of the Day. Well not all of them this week:

meander, languor, oneiric, harbinger, bucolic, ensorcell, sonder

Germany and Austria-Hungary were the first two to use DST in 1916 in order to cut down on the use of coal to produce artificial lighting and save coal for the war effort in WWI, and the UK and other European countries quickly followed.  The US followed suit in 1918, because having more sunlight during working hours meant burning less coal to run the artificial lighting in factories, but the law was repealed in 1919.   It was later reinstituted during WWII and then permanently standardized nationwide by the Uniform Time Act of 1966.  At the time, many students were walking to and from the neighborhood schools and it meant it would be lighter out when they were walking to school and cars could see them better when crossing streets, etc., and it would still be light out when they were returning home later.

It seems the use of DST will be determined by each individual state (and obviously the same in Canada and possibly different countries around the world), which means it will be difficult to tell what time it is in other places when making a call, so play it safe.

P.S. I'm holding my breath and waiting for the Anthology to be posted.  A lot of great authors have already entered their links to show that they've finished their story(ies), and I'm looking forward to reading each one.

I bagled on three of the words this week....oneiric and sonder....

As to daylight vs. standard time...why don't they adjust the clocks by a half hour one way or the other? You'll never be able to satisfy either proponents of daylight vs. standard time....

Living in MA means we change twice a year but I would prefer that we didn't do it and stayed on Standard Time (ST). Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a misnomer as we don't actually save any daylight. And the last time the U.S. chose permanent DST in the seventies there was an uproar to turn the clock back to ST. Besides there's that little thing called the bodies circadian rhythm which aligns with the clock being set to Standard Time.

Now, I enjoy Science Fiction stories which often include the colonization of new planets. Not every planet has the same rotation as our Earth but I don't recall every reading in any depth about how humans learn to deal with a slower or faster planetary rotation (the movie Interstellar dealt with planetary time but the planet was near a black hole, which just throws everything off kilter). If we complain about an hour here and there here how would we like a twenty-eight or twenty-one-and-a-half hour day somewhere else? Food for thought.
