Ieshwar Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Labor day? Excuse me, but you guys are 4 months late! I've celebrated Labour Day 4 months ago on 1 May! Damn, you guys are so retarded in matter of time. We Mauritians are so advanced! Happy Labour Day! A tribute to all those who work hard and try to make this world a better place! And it's Labour Day! You guys should check your English. The goats are making it worse! Smart Ieshwar
Bondwriter Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Ieshwar, Labor Day on the 1st of May is widespread throughout the world, but for some historical reason some will certainly explain, it takes place on the 1st Monday of September in the U.S. In this strange land, you will also notice the locals have alternative spelling from the British English you're taught. color VS. colour neighbor VS. neighbour harbor VS. harbour and so on, and so on (they say sidewalk instead of pavement, truck instead of lorry...) Oh, and by the way, happy Labor Day, especially if it's an idle one!

It is a strange land, but we see no reason to take perfectly good -or Latin spellings and insert a 'u' from the -eur cognate French words.

AFriendlyFace Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Happy "Labor Day" all! (LOL, I do spell the word "labour" but since I'm referencing the specific U.S. holiday I'm not going to)
Site Moderator TalonRider Posted September 3, 2007 Author Site Moderator Posted September 3, 2007 Labor Day also means the unofficial end to summer in the States. This means, that those who haven't started school yet, will be soon. Memorial Day is the unofficial start to Summer.
sat8997 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a federal holiday by Act of Congress in 1894. Sharon (Whose 'day of rest' consisted of a seven and a half hour drive to return her kid to college, leaving her just a tad grumpy [sharon, not the kid])

May Day At the end of this one, Sharon's info is confirmed (not that I would doubt a Goddess anyway): In the United States, however, the official Federal holiday for the "working man" is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor organized the first parade in New York City. Since the Knights of Labor had a loose affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan at that time, many of the labor parade supporters prefer to march on May 1st instead Labour Day Nothing is said about "Driving Daughters Back To College Day", which appears to be a Maryland-only custom.
glomph Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Um. Choosing between the Communists and the Klan, the devil and the deep blue sea, Iraq and a hard place.
