the Little Ashes looks like it could be good, but it's not out yet. i once saw a Salvador Dali exhibition in London, which was amazing if not slightly creepy. so kind of fascinating to see a film about his life since I can't remember much about what I learnt about him except he most likely had a remarkable life.

other interesting thing on that list was a documentary about a transexual and interviews with friends/family all of which do end up supportive. She's a Boy I Knew. which I'll hopefully watch soon as I get time:

another movie that got good reviews on there was Save Me, controversially about the ex-gay ministry but 2 boys that fall in love there, I may watch it, it depends.

I wanted to watch the Pageant about Miss Gay America, but I couldn't find an easy link, but sounds interesting.

Here's a controversial movie, which I get the artistic idea for, but there is something nagging me with time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102494/

Not exactly a gay film for the crowd; every time you watch it, you see something more about the characters. Part of me feels for Mike, who is very screwed up, but there is something both imprisoning and releasing in his final place within the story.

Scott on the other hand seems to be going in reverse; I know it was made in 1991, if it was made in 2008 these two guys would end up together and say f**k the world. Yet, there is something to be said about his choices in life and the path he chose to abandon Mike as i watch it now seems almost too tragic.

The movie star River Phoenix as Mike, the gay hustler, and his friend Keannu Reeves as Scott, another Hustler on a road trip to define their lives. There is something within this story that speaks to me about desire, hopes, and the road we travel may never lead us to the place we thought we'd end up.

On a side note, I am not sure if Scott will ever truly be happy with his choices in life; it is never revealed, but I get the feeling that the road he chose will probable end up over a cliff, unless the mysterious ending is what I hope it should be with a reconciliation based on love.

Anyone else remember this movie?

My own private Idaho, i forgot that one, is ok n_n

Yup, why does everyone forget this movie? My Private Idaho was a tour de force.

All the Movie Critics still praise it, but people seem to forget about it. The themes were built on Shakespeare's Henry IV and the gay love interest was heart wrenching. It made Brokeback Mountain's expansive mountain scenery pale in comparison to the expansive mid-western fields and empty houses of symbolism with the empty expanse of human existence.

I don't know why I am remember the sad gay themed American movies, but here is another I did not see on our lists:

American Beauty

It wasn't all gay themed, but the subtexts were there and it was so sad on many levels about the nature of staying in the closet.

Today, I am in the mood for an animated gay movie.

Queer Duck, hehe!

Also, does anyone think Bugs Bunny cross dresses too much to be straight? I kind of consider him the first "gay icon" in American media.

I won't label him as gay or transgendered, but he does love woman outfits and kissing Elmer fudd. Considering he's a rabbit that might be some form of bestiality, but i will anthropomorphize him as an equivalent human being.

What about Rick and Steve? I haven't seen it yet, but just noted that it is on the "watch instantly" list at Netflix, so I may see it soon.

So I finally saw Plata Quemada and I HIGHLY recommend it to those who haven't seen it already.

The movie isn't perfect. Some plot holes and some confusion as to each characters' motivations, but what really keeps the movie running is the relationship between the two leads. Both guys are very hot, and bring so much intensity to their roles. It's easily one of the best gay relationships I've seen in a movie.

And these guys are badass! Argentinean bank robbers, wielding sub machine guns and firing at a huge crowd of police officers. I wish there were more movies like this, where the lead(s) happen to be gay, but tough, macho and kickass. It'd do a lot to combat stereotypes of gay men here in the U.S.

The acting was great too. Too often in gay-themed movies here in the U.S., the acting is just terribly awful and takes away from the entire movie. This is primarily the reason why I prefer foreign gay films. The acting is usually way better, and this movie was no exception.

Again, HIGHLY recommend that you guys watch this. It'll be well worth your time.

If you're searching for quality films...

My Beautiful Laundrette. A Pakistani immigrant opens a little laundrette with the help of his boyfriend, a former gangster from the other side of town, and deals with everything that comes with an inter-racial and inter-cultural relationship during Thatcher UK. This films was made by the same guy who made The Queen last year, and co-stars a really cute Daniel Day-Lewis.

Maurice. EM Forster, of A Passage to India and Howard's End fame, wrote this novel about a gay English lad growing up and becoming a gay man in the shadow of Oscar Wilde. It's a sweet, though-provoking story, made by Merchant & Ivory, who are famous for their period adaptations (Howard's End, Remains of the Day, etc).

Wedding Banquet. Before Ang Lee made Brokeback, he made this gem of a film, which is about a Taiwanese man living in New York with his American boyfriend. His mom wants him to get married, and she wants a huge banquet to go with it. What's a filial son got to do?

Farewell My Concubine. This isn't exactly gay-themed, but it's an incredible film anyway. A boy is abandoned by his mother and forced to join the Beijing opera troupe, where he specializes in the role of the concubine. This stage identity takes over his life, and he has to deal with falling in love -- during the Cultural Revolution -- with a very straight guy. (Can't blame him -- he's in love with the luminous Gong Li.)

None of these films are gay the way Latter Days or Eating Out are. But they're amazing and deserve to be watched.

YES. Excellent pick. :D

For lighter side, I personally recommend The Latter Days and Sugar. Sugar's acting is better than The Latter Days, but The Latter Days's story is very strong. I like the lead actor in The Latter Days. What ruins it from being five stars are editing and directing. They should shoot it in 24 frames, so it doesn't look so home video-ish. Some actors/actress were miscasts. But I think people should watch the story, because it's overall, pretty lovely.

For more "adult" drama (whatever that means), I concur everything Corvus said plus the following:

  1. The Line of Beauty - Based on Booker Prize winning novel of 2004 by Alan Hollinghurst, and adapted for BBC mini-series by Andrew Davies, and with a superb cast, I can't stress enough why this movie about 80's UK about class and gay climate at the time should be a gay drama's all-time classic. Very depressing. Fortunately it's broken into three episodes, so do it slowly. I've yet to read the book, but many Amazon reviewers complained it's borderline on pornographic, so there is some encouragement for erotica authors here. :) Yes, an erotica can win a very prestigious literary award, as long as the story is serious enough.
  2. A Room with a View - If you are a E.M. Foster and Merchant/Ivory fan, keep an eye on it. Yes, it's not a gay movie per se, but Rupert Grave's character is gay by suggestion. This is a feel good movie (compared with most films on my list...).
  3. The Consequence - An old German film from 1977, the DVD transfer was problematic, and subtitle is hard to read. It's worth the strain on your eyes, because of the story. I think you can stream it through Netflix, if you have that service.
  4. The Rope - Yes, a controversial Hitchcock experiment. It's not a gay film per se, and it puts gay people in bad light, but it's a pedagogic film about responsibility. Both leads were played by gay actors. Based on real life case of Leopold and Loeb, two gay intellectuals who took Nietzsche's superman theory wrongly and decided to kill an innocent man for the heck of it. They happened to be gay, so what do you suppose the general public would think?
  5. Boys in Band - Somebody said this, and I agree. Highly recommended. If one is in his/her self-hatred, drama queen stage, one can learn a lot from it.
  6. Hedwig and the Angry Inch - If you like really crazy gay drag queen, you'd love this. It's depressing and uplifting at the same time.
  7. Velvet Goldmine - Jonathan Rhys-Meyers was a drama queen before he became the Tudor king. If you like David Bowie and such visual rock stuff, this is the film.
  8. Breakfast on Pluto - I've always thought Cillian Murphy has an androgynous appeal, but he didn't look quite right as a drag queen. Despite the appearance, he exhibited his acting range in this. This and The Line of Beauty are the most suicidal inducing films you could ever watch.
  9. Billy Elliot - He is not a poof, but the film touched on gay issue very sensibly.

There are probably some more I've watched over the year that deserve attention. Just add them to Corvus's list and you're ready to.... My Beautiful Launderette has a very good happy ending that's not too disgustingly corny to me, so that deserves a special mention. Oh, and Talented Mr. Ripley.... Matt Damon, bad light, but good film.

Heh... these are no "Shelter" by any means but these two are complete and on Logo Online:

"Mulligans"

"Coffee Date" - This one isn't really a gay themed movie, but its funny... to me, may not be to anyone else but I laughed a little.

Whole New Thing (2005) – A Canadian film about a boy and his teacher that fall in love. The teacher knows better and the boy won't admit it. An interesting view on “love” versus “sexuality.” Very good movie. Makes my top 10 movies ever list.

Get Real (1998) – British film, it was good but not earth-shattering.

wild tigers I have known (2005) – A great film but a terrible film at the same time. I really enjoyed it once I got past the terrible special effects. If you pay attention the acting is not terrible, it is very good. I still haven't fully understood the movie, and I enjoy watching it over again trying. Something I almost never do. It's a trip. American film.

Du er ikke alene (You Are Not Alone) (1978) – Perhaps the best movie ever in existence. Not only does this address homosexuality in an exciting and honest way it also addresses breaking the status-quo on homosexuality. It is Danish, by the way.

Voor een verloren soldaat (For a Lost Soldier) (1992) – An excellent film that addresses the coming of age of a young boy and displays a pederastic relationship in a positive light. Dutch film.

Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink) +1

Beautiful Thing +1

L.I.E. +1

Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (The Blossoming of MaximoOliveros) +1

Sommersturm (Summer Storm) +1

The Rocky Horror Picture Show -1 – Terrible film.

I haven't really ever liked Get Real... it just seemed too... stereotypical... and there was.. I don't know.. a skanky edge to the film? lol. Doing the whole.. Toilet in the park thing, the track star with a smoking habit... The desperate for sex girls, and the homophobic/hornball guy. It just didn't keep my interest at all.

I liked "Mulligans" well enough. The dad was HOT. Total DILF.

I agree with that. This movie made me think whether I would ever have a relations with the father (If he was hot) of a friend. So far, its 50-50.
