JSmith Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I'm stuck in class and can't find anything to keep me entertained so I went through the Internet Archives for GA and found it interesting to see how much it's changed over the years. November 27, 2002 GA's creation date November 28, 2004 August 9, 2006 August 19, 2007 Today Lots of looks, but it just keeps getting better!
old bob Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Nice topic You should also present the progress of the numbers of members and of authors . Any way to imagine the presentation of the site anno 2015 ? . BTW, I hope to be still then, able to enjoy ( I would be 86 ! ).
Site Moderator TalonRider Posted March 24, 2009 Site Moderator Posted March 24, 2009 You might be surprised what you can find in some of the old posts. Sunday, I googled a story while chatting with the author. The story is hosted elsewhere and I found a couple of links to here, one was a blog entry, and the other was a forum comment. I came across something interesting from 2006 that is now taking place. I won't tell you what I found as it could be considered a spoiler of sorts. GA has come a long way since the beginning.
MikeL Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Congratulations and thanks to the administrators and authors who have been involved with GA over the last seven years. If I figured it correctly, Joe was 12 years old at the beginning. GA has come a long way.
W_L Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Wow, I love the living biography of GA. Why does 2007 look so sleek? Maybe I am starting to get into Campy things, but it seems cool, dan must fight the urge!
Kurt Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 The 2002 one does not show how many users the site had. Looks like there were 2 hosted authors. In November of 2004 there were about 400 members, and about 8,200 posts. Looks like there were 7 hosted authors. In August of 2006 there were about 2,700 members, and about 41,600 posts. Looks like there were 20 hosted authors, and 2 shared authors. In August of 2007 there were about 4,600 members and about 90,300 posts. Looks like there were 3 promising authors, 5 shared, and 22 hosted authors. Today there are 6,858 members, and 172,047 posts. There are 31 hosted authors, and 14 promising authors. Wow... the site really has grown a lot.
Mark Arbour Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 That was a pretty cool walk through memory lane.
Sir Galahad Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Blimey, it has evolved over the years. Well done guys.
AFriendlyFace Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 (edited) Very cool post, Joe! I can actually still vaguely remember the 2nd version that was in place prior to the change in Aug 06. Nice topic You should also present the progress of the numbers of members and of authors . Any way to imagine the presentation of the site anno 2015 ? . BTW, I hope to be still then, able to enjoy ( I would be 86 ! ). I'm definitely planning on us both to still be enjoying it in 2015, Old Bob! Wow, I love the living biography of GA. Why does 2007 look so sleek? Maybe I am starting to get into Campy things, but it seems cool, dan must fight the urge! I loved the 07 look too! To be honest that was probably my favourite; I loved the sidebar background! However, I'm a major fan of the new, expanded tab system we have at the top and I totally adore it! It's very functional One thing that I've noticed over the years is that I used to not actually navigate the site very much at all. I had all my favourite forums and author sites bookmarked and I would go to them directly. Now, I always start from the same place (the forum index) and go wherever else I need to go directly. I think a large factor in that change is how easy and efficient it is to navigate the site now Thanks for the nostalgia! Take care all -Kevin Edited March 25, 2009 by AFriendlyFace
Site Administrator Myr Posted March 25, 2009 Site Administrator Posted March 25, 2009 Most of the changes over the years were geared towards making navigating easier. Some of it worked, a lot of it didn't. I did a lot of studying of site navigation patterns when we came up with the current menu. Every major thing on the site is accessible within 3 clicks of every other major thing. (most within 1 click) As for growth? by making the site easier to navigate, people stay on the site longer and are far more likely to join. We continue to make efforts to recruit more authors. It was definitely an interesting stroll down memory lane. Myr
Krista Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Aww I loved going back in time.. I kinda miss the August 2007 page, but I love the new one and the easy way to navigate and such. Thanks Joe.
