Canuk Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Actually, you can do a search and find the real history behind this whole issue. Mann arbitrarily quit his station off Cadiz in July and just sailed home to England, in contravention of Admiralty orders and Jervis' orders. Langara escorted Richery out into the Atlantic, then left a force of Spanish ships with him to attack Newfoundland. Solano had overall command of that fleet. Langara himself returned to the Mediterranean, to Cartagena. That must have done wonders for Mann's career!! Nice to be back with Grainger.... he is a bit like an errant lover that wanders off every now and again!
mmike1969 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 the Granger Luck is still with him I have to wonder how long it's going to last though. Thanks Mark for the chapter!
rjo Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 No one but George Granger could have pulled that off. Hopefully his luck will continue.
Mark M Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Holy Heart Attack Batman. I was like freaking out when granger saled into that fleet. Yikes :S Oh well what can you do i guess? If he'd have been captured i'd have been sad
Mark Arbour Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 That must have done wonders for Mann's career!! Actually, and this is stunning...Mann ended up being appointed as one of the Lords of the Admiralty in 1800. 1
ricky Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 A fantastic chapter Mark. I felt the angst within, as they realized their probable plight. I marveled at the ingenuity of Granger hailing fraudulently and realized that the lack of technology, allowed it to realistically happen. It would be difficult for me, as a writer, (or so I have fancied myself until I read from the master's work) to "unlearn" technology in my thinking. It shows how well that you become Granger when he steps forward to be written in your mind's eye. You also place the reader, very believably, in the pitch black of the sea at night. How scary it would be to be underway with no idea of the path before you. And the balls it took to think that you could navigate through a fleet undetected in it. The absolute silence of the night, except the sea lapping at the bow of the ship, as it made way knowing that there was a very real chance of coming upon something in the blackness of night that was too close to navigate away from. Prayers whispered and knees knocking the only distractions to the watch, save that of the sudden need and fear of taking a piss. It had to be a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" feeling. Were it me in Granger's shoes, the new uniform would have certainly been necessary as I would have shat the current one, but I fear the pucker effect would have prevented changing. And my orders might have been, "Mr. Clifton, pass the bucket of bacon fat amongst the crew for lube, we're all screwed and this is gonna hurt!" Once again, you've shown how pleasurable it would have been, to be Granger's tailor. What a set of balls the guy had to have! An after thought. It would have been interesting to have found a brand on the right wrist of the admiral! God, I'm gonna hate to see this one end. Cheers! r
ricky Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Actually, and this is stunning...Mann ended up being appointed as one of the Lords of the Admiralty in 1800. Certainly makes ME want to say, "Lordy, Lordy Lordy. What's this Mann's Navy cuming too!" 1
mmike1969 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Certainly makes ME want to say, "Lordy, Lordy Lordy. What's this Mann's Navy cuming too!" where is that 'slap someone upside their head' icon when it's needed?? 1
ricky Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 where is that 'slap someone upside their head' icon when it's needed?? :wacko:ok, Close enough. Mann! You mean you didn't find that punny? I think you broke my Mann-dible Admially. Ouch! Now cut that out!
Clydee Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 :wacko:ok, Close enough. Mann! You mean you didn't find that punny? I think you broke my Mann-dible Admially. Ouch! Now cut that out! I was searching desperately for an icon to use against you but nothing seems to be appropriate... 1
Chip2 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Actually, and this is stunning...Mann ended up being appointed as one of the Lords of the Admiralty in 1800. Yes but your the Author and with a few taps on the keyboard he (Mann) can fall or be pushed over the side... :snork: ... :boy:
Mark Arbour Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Yes but your the Author and with a few taps on the keyboard he (Mann) can fall or be pushed over the side... :snork: ... :boy: Yeah, I know, but I'm trying so hard to be as historically accurate as I can on this story, other than inserting a fictitious character or ship into the fray now and then.
centexhairysub Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Well, didn't have to wait even a minute to reply to this one, Chapter 42 is wonderful... I just love this story, the detail in the writing to the time and place it was placed is beyond excellent. I so enjoy this story and can't wait for the next one....

Mark Arbour Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks! I finished the last chapter last night. There are 44 of them.
Clydee Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks! I finished the last chapter last night. There are 44 of them. Send 'em!!! Please! But please tell me you are writing more about Granger! 1
mmike1969 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Well I found the fish slap but it needs to be made a LOT smaller 1
Mark Arbour Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Send 'em!!! Please! But please tell me you are writing more about Granger! The next story is already forming in my mind, but my life is busy now, so it will have to wait for a lull.
sat8997 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 The next story is already forming in my mind, but my life is busy now, so it will have to wait for a lull. Really? You mean...a break? I get a break? But...but...what will I do with all my free time?
ricky Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Well I found the fish slap but it needs to be made a LOT smaller Hey, if you looked like that, I'd let you do it! But be forewarned, I don't look like the recipient either.
ricky Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Fantastic chapter Mark. As always, an adventure. And brooks? A newby and uncute? Now that is a change in your writing style. I think the presentation of the Ruby should prove to make Mann's demise a little more definite. Or at least get him out from under the the sheets of a ship and behind a desk where he's relatively harmless. Ya, I know, history smishtory. I say do him in. But wait until Jervis get's wind of it. He'll lose his topsail! At least I hope so. You can't let him get off scott free Mark. I mean, he didn't even come home with a prize! He just decided, "Eh, well, let's all go have a curry. Shall we?" Now the big question, who will scramble to welcome George's endowment home first. I can't wait to find out. And I wish we had pictures of the faces at the admiralty when he told them he was granted the Collar of Carlos III! Wait until they read the details of waking up in the middle of the mixed fleet and managed to tell the tale. Especially after blasting the frog! Woo Hoo! And Caroline giving him a third. How sweet it is, eh?
Clydee Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 The next story is already forming in my mind, but my life is busy now, so it will have to wait for a lull. Busy??? You mean you have a life other than writing??? That's okay, I suppose, I guess I'll have to deal with it...
centexhairysub Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 :pickaxe: :pickaxe: :pickaxe: I loved Chapter 43 of HMS Belvidera. I just so enjoy this story and it has pulled me in like few others stories ever have. I so love when Granger is home and on land but when he gets there, I so miss him being on board the ship. I wonder what Granger and Caroline will have to do about that sister-in-law. I wonder if a tragic accident isn't somewhere in her future. I am not sure I would ever want to cross Caroling as much as she seems to be doing. Can't wait for the next chapter in this story and the next story in this series... Mark please keep up the great work...
Mark Arbour Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 :pickaxe: :pickaxe: :pickaxe: \I so love when Granger is home and on land but when he gets there, I so miss him being on board the ship. I I'll bet Granger feels the same way.
Westie Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I really enjoyed this whole story Mark - really fantastic. The last chapter was a good closer. I did openly cringe at the mistakes in the "investiture" as a Knight of the Bath, but only a geek like me is going to notice those sorts of inaccuracies All in all - a really exceptional story..... SO.... When's the next one?
