Duncan Ryder Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Anyone else being pitched by this site or know anything about it? They are asking for permission to use stories (which is more that some people do, sigh...).
Linxe Termoil Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Aye, I got an email from the gentleman who is attempting to start up this site. He used an old email address of mine that I once associated with on Nifty, when I was writing smut at the wee age of 15. If he's interested in those stories associated with Nifty I am, most likely, willing to give him permission to post them. As a promising author here on GA, though, I believe I have obligations to GA. I will see what he says to me in response and than I will go from there, and I may perhaps give him permission to use some of the stories I have here, after I check into a few things first. His site, as best I can tell, seems to be empty, and I'm not sure I cared for the user terms: You are free: [*]to Share
Krista Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I got one too.. I didn't go to any of the links... never know what's a virus these days and I'm paranoid like that. I don't think I've ever written anything that would fall into the "smut" category, but I also don't know what he really is looking for.
Linxe Termoil Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) Well, he sent me this email, so perhaps it can better explain it. My name removed - My name is Hampton and I'm hoping I can get your help. Many years ago, before the web was filled with video-porn, I used to read a bunch of online sources of "erotic fiction." And, I still read them today. Except, the websites are *exactly* the same as they were in 1996. No one has done anything interesting or modern in "erotic fiction" in a long time. So, being a web developer by profession, I decided to stop complaining and do something about it. For the past couple weeks I've been working non-stop in my spare time on a new site: Txtgasm (cute name, right?) Basically, the pitch is that users can post, edit, review, rate, read, and recommend stories to each other. And, I'm hoping if we get enough information, that we can do some really cool "recommendation" stuff so that the site will figure out what your tastes are! Cool, right? The only problem is... an empty site isn't very interesting. So, I looked around the web for authors that I thought would be a good fit for the site. And, I came across your stories and I was hoping that you'd be willing to license your story as Creative Commons (attribution, share-alike) which basically means that you say its ok to use your story as long as they give you credit and whatever they do with it has to be Creative Commons. Doing this helps protect you, as an author, and helps to allow reasonable-use of your hard work. Lots of creative people today are using the Creative Commons license, so that's why I went with it! All you have to do is click the link... which I setup so that you don't even have to signup or anything. It is all magically easy! Click here to read the terms: http://removed. Thanks! Hampton PS: I know an email is pretty annoying, but its better than me violating the copyright! If we don't hear back from you in 10 days, we'll just assume you said no! PPS: If you have any questions or need clarification, or want to yell at me or anything, then just respond to this email. Yes, I'm a real person! If you'd like to unsubscribe and stop receiving these emails . Edited April 29, 2010 by Linxe Termoil
Hoskins Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 AH HA! This agreement and license encompasses the following stories: '"Meeting Mike"', 'Loving Devin' ::runs off to read smut::
Linxe Termoil Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 AH HA! ::runs off to read smut:: Well, if it's the smut I wrote back when I was 16/17 years old, that you're interested in, then don't forget to read "In field of love" in the rural section of Nifty. One of those three stories is based completely on fact. I won't say which one, I'll let you guess instead. And yes, they're all three on the Nifty Archives. Happy Reading, Linxe
Mark Arbour Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I got one too. The same letter. When I went to the site, it wasn't operational. They're getting their stuff from Nifty. I could tell by the chapters and stories they listed.
Linxe Termoil Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Hahah. I'm not linking the stories. 2 of them are in highschool one is in rural, all three of them in the gay area of the site. I'll also mention I was a teenager when i wrote those. 15/16/17 years old... and seeing as how old I am now, that means they were written before 2000 when I was still in highschool. Happy hunting and I think I was a better writer back then 8) How odd. I get stupider as I get older
Site Administrator Graeme Posted April 29, 2010 Site Administrator Posted April 29, 2010 It sounds to me like he's trying to set up a competing site to Nifty, using a more 'modern' website design. I wonder if he's just been harvesting email addresses, or is he being picky about which authors he's approaching. Since I haven't posted at Nifty, and I don't write erotica, I suspect I won't get an email. To build up a competitor for Nifty isn't going to be easy if that's his goal. But he's certainly got people talking about his site, which is a start
Ronyx Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I received the email as well. However, it came through a personal email address I have never used as a writer or given out to any reader. I have no idea how he got access to it. To me, this sends out alarms.
gabrielsknife Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I just tried to google the site name, and I got nothing. This does not sound cool to me at all. Am I reading this right: this place will let other users take *your* story to post other places, just as long as they give you credit for it? I dunno about ya'll, but that's a big fat *no* in my book. I like to know where my stories are going and who's reading them.
Site Administrator Graeme Posted April 29, 2010 Site Administrator Posted April 29, 2010 Am I reading this right: this place will let other users take *your* story to post other places, just as long as they give you credit for it? I dunno about ya'll, but that's a big fat *no* in my book. I like to know where my stories are going and who's reading them. If he wants his site to take off, that's one issue he'll need to clarify quickly. That is, however, what the Common Creative license says. It works better for things like pictures, and trying to apply it to stories doesn't quite fit, in my opinion.
Rilbur Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I'm guessing, from what you're saying, that he used a predefined 'boilerplate' rather than writing his own? Personally, I'm wondering if any of my work is going to be 'tapped'. Most of the stuff under 'Rilbur' isn't exactly 'txtgasm' material, but I do have a few stories out there under psuedonyms that I keep meaning to go back to and work with.
Krista Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I'm using a second e-mail when I send my chapters to Nifty and he sent me one there too... , again I didn't try the links... I didn't give him any permission to use my stories though.
Duncan Ryder Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 Thanks folks. That's the same email I got. I'm ignoring it.
Krista Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 When I tried the links it told me that he wanted permission to post two stories of mine, it's the only stories that I have updated on Nifty or awhile, but he did his research since they're on different Nifty categories. He says he's a real person and that he's legitimate, but I don't like how the site looks to me. It seems to be... pretty low quality at the moment. I don't know what he is going to do with it though, its difficult to trust someone new, so I don't want to give him permission... especially since the stories are GA first, Nifty second as it is.. I would hate to have to worry about them on a whole other site. As far as smut, I don't think he's into that? The two stories he wanted, one of them doesn't even have a sex scene... not really anything sexual at all about either of them. I don't think he's looking for that.. or he's just looking for stories on a massive scale.
