Naptowngirl Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Saw this thread, and decided to throw my hat in the ring...I've seen Shelter and it was good, but my all time Fav is an old one called 'Torch Song Trilogy' It's a classic. oh and 'Partners' Not so much a "gay" movie as a gay themed.. with Ryan Oneal and John Hurt...it's a light hearted drama/comedy.
EvaShandor Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 There was a fantastic Korean film adaptation of a Japanese manga, called Antique Bakery which must have been released in 2008. (The film is simply called 'Antique') It looks cheesecake-y at first glance, but when you get into it, it is similar in style to Amelie and the soundtrack is fantastic. It follows the story of a young executive Jin who quits his job to open up a bakery - he jokes that it's just to meet women, but it's then revealed that he's done it to track down a murder who is obsessed with cake and who also kidnapped Jin when he was a small boy. Jin enlists the help of Min Seon Woo, a fantastic patessereur(? he makes pastries), not realising it's a classmate he cruelly rejected on their high school graduation, and they're joined by Ki Beom and Soo Yeong, a former boxing champ and Jin's bodyguard respectively. I know how silly the plot sounds from this description, but it is worth a go. The execution of the film is very clever, and it certainly doesn't feel stereotyped. And the cake looks DELICIOUS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antique_(movie)
cehammock Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 When I think of my favorite gay movie, the first thing that comes to mind is the classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. Why has no one mentioned it? It's pretty gay. You have to love Frank-n-Furter. It just makes me want to do the Time Warp, again. Even better, a floor show. 1
bookjunky18 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) I like the Takumi-Kun live action series based on a japanese mangas (there's 4 released so far and can be watched on youtube. I also like Junjou: Pure heart live action based on a japanese manga Both can be watched in full on youtube. Edited September 21, 2011 by bookjunky18
Mal Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Nobody has mentioned the four movies i am about to drop. I understand the appeal of emotional dramas for gay movies because it's not easy being a gay. But I love comedy, and these movies made me laugh my ass off way too much. Outing Riley- a catholic gay in a family of four brothers and one sister comes out to his brothers. Very funny, lots of humor in it. My favorite gay movie. The Eating Out trilogy- Not very good plotwise, but effing hilarious. They can be stereotypical, but relax and laugh at them! 1
Y_B Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I recently just watched the entire "Eating Out" series (if you can call it that) on Netflix and had a decent time. They're terrible terrible movies, but the one thing you get out of them is their mind-numbingly stupid humor and situtations which is great for stupid people like myself and the few giggles I got out of it. If you enjoy cheesy gay flicks that's practically porn with a story, I recommend them.
Mal Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Netflix is where I watched them too. They are stupid, incredibly so, but funny none the less. That's actually the only way I've watched a gay movie. Go Netflix!
Contest4jen Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I love you Philip Morris - absolutely hilarious!
Syniq Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Beautiful Thing. Still makes me cry when I watch it. Favourite gay comedy is 9 Dead Gay Guys. It's pure genius, and uses stereotypes fantastically to demonstrate exactly why they're ridiculous and completely unreliable. Oh, and there's The Rules of Attraction too, which isn't really a gay movie per sé, but it does have a large gay element to the plot, which is peppered with one-liners and grenade moments that will have you crying with laughter half the time, and with sadness and empathy the rest. Throw in a liberal helping of cringeworthiness, and the whole thing is well worth watching.
Syniq Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Jin enlists the help of Min Seon Woo, a fantastic patessereur(? he makes pastries), not realising it's a classmate he cruelly rejected on their high school graduation, and they're joined by Ki Beom and Soo Yeong, a former boxing champ and Jin's bodyguard respectively. The word you're after is pâtissier (pâtissière for a woman), although 'pastry chef' is perfectly acceptable. I'd just go with 'pastry chef', TBH. Pâtissier is a pain in the jacksie to type on a non-French keyboard. Also, I've added this to my list as it sounds like it could be rather amusing.
Y_B Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I love you Philip Morris - absolutely hilarious! I actually rented this on DVD when I saw that Obi Wan Kenobi was in it....I was super excited (pun intended) It was a freakin weird movie but had its moments and one of the few times I got to see Jim Carey in a serious demeanor on screen. Anyways yea I liked it too
AnimalMorph Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Aha! This thread is absolutely amazing. I've been searching for a gay themed movie for a while myself but to no avail. Not to mention i have to be secretive about it and watch out the history file of my browser. This'll help me do just that. As for me, well I haven't seen a lot of gay movie but being an asian myself, I have to recommend Love of Siam. This movie is so damn innocent but that's not all, the best part is I can watch it with my family together without being outted. Why? You ask? Well, just watch it and you'll know what I mean.
Mal Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I love you phillip morris was genius. i loved it too. The ending was the greatest part
Sidd Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Strapped: A movie that came out a couple of years ago, got lots of raves and hardly gets any attention at all. Very intellectual, very artful, very enigmatic. It has a sort of Twilight Zone plot: a hustler gets trapped in the building of a trick and has encounters with just about every gay personality type out there while trying to find a way out. Despite the title, no hard S/M elements.
Zombie Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) I like to be uplifted by films, so I avoid anything violent or depressing. Yeah, I know, I'm feeble minded, so sue me. Many of these have already been mentioned, but here are my all-time faves and all have guaranteed happy endings Boy Culture (2006) - excellent US film Dorian Blues 2004 - funny, witty, sharp Eating Out 2 (2006) - arch comedy but it is very funny, well produced and well acted Get Real - very good schoolboy Brit flick Just a Question of Love - excellent French student coming out story - both actors v hot! Latter Days - excellent US film Le Fate Ignoranti 2001 - beatiful Italian film, stylish and oozes humanity. I love it. The ending is very subtle - you need to have been paying attention to understand it If you download it watch out, though - one set of subtitles is excellent, the other is rubbish. There is a bizarre death at the beginning but don't worry about that Mambo Italiano 2003 - brilliant! Next Year In Jerusalem 1997 -nice Jewish love story set in NY Patrik 1,5 - excellent Swedish gay adoption story Plan B 2009 - slow but satisfying Shelter - excellent US film Sobreviviré or I Will Survive 1999 - excellent Strapped 2010 - really a 5 act play Summer Storm or Sommersturm (2004) - very good German film Une robe d'été or A Summer Dress 2002 - I love this short French film, it's hot and funny If anyone wants more details you can ask here or PM me. Zombie Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Weekend 2011 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714210/ Gay Indie Brit flick released this month. Two guys meet and fall in love over a weekend. IMDB and Daily Telegraph rave reviews. Sounds like this could be a favourite movie. Has anyone seen it?
SkittlePrincess Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 The ending to 'Shelter' is beautiful Also, 'But I'm a Cheerleader' is always good for a laugh while still having a lovely story line.
Aximili Chaosmembrane Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 (edited) Niiiice! I can add more good gay movies to my list to watch! () My favorites so far: - Shelter - wonderful storyline, awesome and realistic emotion, and one of the very few movies with a sweet, happy ending - Latter Days - just for the happy ending I see too few gay movies with happy endings like this, although I don't understand how the restaurant owner suddenly became the storyteller in the end - Sommersturm - cute guys I loved how the story ended with his best friend, but I am confused what happened to his lover - Takumi-kun - I think it was the first in the series, where the guy is a violin player. The other part is awesome, too, which includes a gay teacher and a prostitute (I think) student, but not as great as the first one, IMHO. And my most favorite of all: Love of Siam - simply FANTASTIC! Too awesome for words! NO person has lived until they've watched this wonderful movie! The ending tore my heart apart, but the story and the characters made up for it. Merlin Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Dunno if this has been mentioned yet...but my favorite is probably Latter Days. Explores some very important themes and the whole story is just very touching. As a bonus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in it AND there's an airport sex scene.
Daniel89 Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I've only seen 3 gay movies, but I liked all of them. Shelter Bear City Balls (german)

Merlin Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Ahhh You Are Not Alone...I watched the version where a man who sounded like he was 60 translated the dialogue slightly out of sync... Wild Tigers I Have Known was also good, but a little artsy for my taste. Summer Storm is another favorite. Awesome plot, and very well acted. Sounds like it would've made a good GA story.
VictoryPanda Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 There's and Asian film called "The Love Of Siam" that I love to death. It has such a bittersweet ending to it. Basically, there are two best friends as kids that get separated after a family tragedy and meet again years later. One is certain of himself while the other doesn't even pay homosexuality mind until he comes to the realization that he actually loves the other. It ends on a sad note and almost had me in tears... but it's my favorite gay movie.
Guest raspberryman Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 My favorite gay movie would have to be a Brazilian movie called. "Do Começo ao Fim". It is a story about two boys who are half brothers who fall in love wiht each other. I know what some of you might think tha tit is sick and gross. However, I loved the movie not so much about the subjet matter but how the movie showed that you cant help who you fall in love with.
Guest raspberryman Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 There have been so many that I have seen in the recent years. However, I have come up with a few more of them: Torch Song Trilogy Mambo Italiano Long TIme Companion LOng Term Relationship
