Chapter 8

-When JP despairs over the realization that there isn't the tight, cohesive family bond that he thought there was.

-When JP looks out over the Bay Area, and reflects.

I've already used it- it was Bitty's theme, and it was the song I used for the fallout of the Triton scandal.

Chapter 9

-When J.P. observes the new Claremont Mills development, which is the centerpiece of the Claremont revival plans.

"Only In America" by Brooks and Dunn

-When JP and Stefan met up with the young ones, and show off how Stefan pimped their crib.

And with this song, Gwen Stefani officially jumped on the 2000's hip-hop bandwagon. Not that I can blame her- hip-hop was REALLY dominant for this decade.

-When J.P. lays out his hopeful plans for the city of Claremont to the townspeople, not knowing that a portion of its youth will be heading off to war in a few months.

-When J.P. talks to his daughter on the phone, who can't believe that he won't yield.

This is totally my favorite number from the movie.

Chapter 10

-When Will complains to Gathan about how boring Claremont is.

-When Will and Random Blond Claremont dude get massively high together.

"Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz

Why does Claremont have so many blondes? Was it originally a Swedish settlement?

-When Stefan and Will enter the gay club.

I remember that song was EVERYWHERE that summer.

-When Will grinds with his random trick and has fun in the V.I.P. room.

"Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

Robbie Williams...I always liked him and thought it was a shame that his career in the US never quite took off. Bad case of timing- to be a sustained male hitmaker in the US during the 2000's,  you needed to be either a version of Usher,  a version of Linkin Park, or a soft rocker like John Mayer. Male dance pop vocalists like Robbie were pretty much passe in the U.S. for most of this decade, save for some one-hit wonders. (I'm not counting Justin Timberlake, because his music was pretty much R&B post-N'Sync.)

Chapter 11

-When Tony takes Will on a tour of  St. Louis, which is a pretty quirky city.

"Barely Legal" by The Strokes

British music is like always ahead of the curve as opposed to the U.S. God, the Strokes were awesome.

-When Tony and Will talk about the Dana situation.

I pretty much had Wheatus on endless repeat that year. This is one of my favorites by them.

-When Dana comes to St. Louis and brings the romance to a screeching halt.

"Case of the Ex" by Mya

I've been wating for a good moment to use that one. Mya really did just disapear, didn't she?

-When Will drives off with Tony's friend for the float trip, and watches the agony on Tony's face as they drive away.

I gotta admit,  I like how Will is reacting. He gets it, but he doesn't REALLY get it because he's never been closeted in his life. I'm like that, too- I get Tony, but I don't REALLY get Tony because other than some half-hearted attempts at saying how hot Jennifer Love Hewitt and Katherine Heigl are back in 2001, I've never really tried to cover up being gay. Will is really representative of the "new"generation of gays who grew up in a time and a place they weren't shamed for being gay.

Chapter 12

-When Tony finally dumps Dana.

-When Will and Tony talk about Tony's issues.

Dear god, you know how many times I've heard a college band cover this song?

Finally, ear gauges. Those were seriously picking up steam around this time period. Although some people went waaayyyy overboard on them. He was kind of ahead of the curve though with his hair, though- hair was almost uniformly short, gelled, and spiked during this time period. I didn't start seeing more guys with his kind of naturalistic hair until about 2002, 2003.

Then there were the Converse sneakers, which came back in during the early '00s, and I think he's wearing Dickies. Essentially, the quintessential punk/skater/rocker look going on there.

-As the float trip party rages.

Blue, aren't you glad I'm incorporating country into my music choices? I was all set for "Fiesta" by R. Kelly and Nelly, but this seemed to fit more for some reason.

-When Will has sex with Tony, and muses on what a relationship like him will be like.

It's getting weird that we've hit the point where music that was popular when I was a teenager are being used. I remember this song being everywhere around late 2000/early '01.

This was one of the things I really missed not having access to my computer.  I could get the stories but to get onto any of the forums on my phone was just such a pain...  I really missed seeing what music you selected for each chapter.

So glad to see you use Tapestry by Carole King, one of my all time favorites, and I agree about Robbie Williams, he was quite good; plus anything with REM was just perfect...

Chapter 13

-When Will realizes that Tony hooked up with Rick, has his own fun, and then lays down the law about the parameters of their relationship.

-When Will comes to an unsettling truth about Tony.

-When Will decides to stay on the trip and has some nice revenge sex.

Hmmm, all were interesting picks...  I really always liked Duran Duran and Toni Braxton is great but I hate Destiny's Child and truly despise Beyonce Knowles.  She is a great example of someone with little to no talent making it big by having a big ass and willing to stab anyone and everyone in the back....

I think she's become more likeable after marrying Jay Z, but yes, there was a time when I really despised Beyonce Knowles. Unfortunately, you can't really ignore her- if you count Destiny's Child, she had a top 10 hit in every single year of the 2000's, and her career was unquestionably hot from 2003 (Dangerously in Love) to 2008 (Single Ladies).

Chapter 14

-As the float trip commences, and Will becomes increasingly irritated with Tony.

-When Will and Mason have some fun, and Mason invites him to his lake house.

-When Will tells Tony that he's going off with Mason to his lake house.

-When Will and Mason get it on at Mason's lake house.

-When Will tells Brad about his Tony epiphany, and his plans to go to Hawaii.

Blue, I really hope you've appreciated my effort to put in a little country music. St. Louis strikes me as the kind of Tea Party area where country would be rather popular, so I really looked hard at circa 1999-2001 country music. (Well, except for Garth, who is timeless.)

It's popular in certain areas, like South St. Louis County, Jefferson County, and St. Charles County.  In the city and the other suburbs, especially West County where Tony is, it's not popular at all.  But I like your choices!

Posted

Thanks. I kind of figured it'd be popular with Tony's friends, since you've described them as being somewhat redkneck, good ol' Southern boy types, so eh.

2001 was a better year for music than 2000 was, so I'm enjoying this.

And, indeed, I do appreciate you stretching yourself to include country.

"Friends in Low Places" is one of my favorite songs, because the singer absolutely refuses to feel sorry for himself or anyone else, despite the sad situation he's in.

My freshman year of high school, two of the senior members of my academic decathlon club wrote alternate lyrics to this song, called "Friends in Lower Egypt," to act as a mnemonic for various ancient Egyptian cites along the Nile river. They then dressed in cowgirl outfits (I muttered "vaquerita" out of family loyalty a bit here) and had my cousin video tape them while I held their cue cards. More than fifteen years later, we can still sing the chorus, and did so at my cousin's wedding.

Not sure I would have ever called Shania country but do love all your choices for this chapter except the one previously noted hatred of all things Beyonce...

Chapter 15

-When Will recounts his teenage drama with Brad, and admitting that he doesn't even know if he wants any kind of relationship with Tony.

-When Will gets into a "surf" war with a native.

-When Will gets into a near-fight with the guy who was actually supposed to be his driver.

We're at the height of the Poppy Punk era, which was then replaced with the Emo era circa 2005. I used to think Hot Topic was soooooo cool back then. It's kind of fun to re-visit the days when I used to listen to Poppy Punk albums and wished desperately I could be cool enough to hang out at the Grange with people that were actually punks. Oh, for the days of bleach, Manic Panic, and massively baggy cargo shorts.

Chapter 16

-When J.P. describes the excess that Stefan's going to in order to make Bastille Day a success.

"

Moulin Rouge was hands-down my favorite movie of 2001.

-When Will is clued in about the party by Darius and JJ, and cackles over the fact that Marie is going to miss seeing N'Sync perform at Escorial.

-When Will decides to invest in real estate.

Cent, I'm sory, but 2000-2001 was a pretty huge period for Destiny's Child. I really can't ignore that.  LOL.

I once remember this Communist e-friend going on a rant about this song. I think I actually joined the Young Communist League email list for a bit. LMAO. Edited by methodwriter85

Chapter 17

-When Will tells Brad he bought a house, and Brad blows up.

"Everbody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears

That song is such a great power anthem for Brad, as well as the mindset of Mark's 1980's Yuppie Generation. 1985 was such a great time for music.

-When J.P. recounts the smashing success of the Bastille Day.

"Pop!" by N'Sync

I thought it was funny that the song asks when pop is going to fade out...and then it pretty much imploded in 2002. I think largely because after 9/11, people were not in the mood for happy pop tunes. Happy pop didn't really die out in the U.K. like it did in the U.S.

-At the family, where Brad eventually blows up at Isidore, not just for Will, but for the way she played favorites with her children back in 1980.

"Canon In D" (Ordinary People)

I was absolutely obsessed with that movie when I was 16, 17. I was in total awe of Timothy Hutton in that movie. Conrad would be my dream role. (Alright, I'm probably too old for that now.) I never get to play vulnerable roles like that. I'm always put in cocky, smarmy roles

No, Chapter 18 - Lahainaluna.

<media>

Given we are in West Maui, Kai probably goes to Lahainaluna, the oldest boarding school west of the Rockies having been founded in 1831. Most students are not boarded these days, but still have two dorms for kids from the outer islands.
